Verlinde and Wijnholt (JHEP 01 (2007) 106) constructed the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (with an extended Higgs sector and extra U(1) factors) as the world-volume theory of a D3-brane on a partial resolution of a del Pezzo 8 singularity with an A2A_2 complex-structure degeneration, and explicitly acknowledged the gaps separating this local model from a realistic string vacuum: control of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms (especially those from closed-string hypermultiplet auxiliary fields appearing in D-terms), lifting the local construction to a fully consistent compact Calabi-Yau compactification with stabilized moduli, and phenomenological viability of the extended Higgs/U(1) sector. Companion and later work advanced each component — topological conditions for hypercharge, compact Calabi-Yau embeddings with full moduli stabilization and de Sitter vacua for del Pezzo visible sectors, and a globally embedded Standard Model quiver with moduli-mediated supersymmetry breaking — but no construction combines all features, and the 2024 review literature states the full synthesis remains open.

Background

In string theory, particle physics is encoded in the geometry of compact extra dimensions: a 'compactification' of ten-dimensional type IIB string theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold (a complex Kähler manifold with vanishing first Chern class, chosen to preserve minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions) yields a four-dimensional effective theory whose gauge group and matter content are determined by D-branes — extended objects on which open strings end — placed in the internal space. A D3-brane fills spacetime and sits at a point in the extra dimensions. Near a Calabi-Yau singularity a D3-brane splits into 'fractional branes', each wrapping a different collapsed two-cycle; the resulting world-volume theory is a 'quiver gauge theory' — one gauge factor U(n_i) per fractional brane, with chiral bifundamental matter multiplets (fields transforming in the fundamental representation of one gauge factor and the anti-fundamental of another) for each pair, arranged so that the quiver diagram's triangles encode Yukawa couplings. A 'del Pezzo surface' is a two-dimensional complex surface obtained by blowing up n points on the complex projective plane (n ≤ 8); its singular cone is a canonical place to localize a gauge sector, because the exceptional two-cycles can collapse while the gauge theory stays decoupled from gravity. Verlinde and Wijnholt proposed the Standard Model as the world-volume theory of a single D3-brane on a partial resolution of a del Pezzo 8 singularity, reached by tuning the complex structure to an A2A_2 degeneration (a surface singularity locally of C2/Z3\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_3 type) and Higgsing the parent quiver (which requires tuning six Yukawa couplings Cq,q,rC_{q,q,r} to zero to preserve F-flatness, i.e. the vacuum equations for the superpotential's auxiliary fields). The resulting model — which the authors call the MQSSM, the 'minimal quiver extension of the MSSM' — has exactly the matter content of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), plus extra Higgs doublets and several extra U(1) gauge factors, with gauge and Yukawa couplings dual to non-dynamical closed-string moduli and hence continuously tunable. Three families of gaps were acknowledged. First, 'soft' supersymmetry-breaking terms (supersymmetry-violating scalar masses, gaugino masses, and cubic couplings added to the MSSM Lagrangian): in the local model, some arise from imaginary-anti-self-dual three-form fluxes (the auxiliary fields of the complex-structure moduli), but mass terms generated by auxiliary fields of closed-string hypermultiplets (the moduli multiplets containing the Kähler moduli and dilaton) 'appear in D-terms' — the second, non-holomorphic set of auxiliary equations — and their geometric meaning and couplings were, and remain, poorly understood. Second, the local singularity must be embedded in a compact Calabi-Yau with orientifold planes (the fixed loci of a geometric involution acting on the Calabi-Yau, which carry negative D-brane charge and are needed for tadpole cancellation), with all closed-string moduli stabilized by fluxes and non-perturbative effects (as in the KKLT and Large Volume Scenarios, the standard frameworks that combine fluxes with non-perturbative effects or exponentially large volumes to fix all moduli), which is the 'local-to-global' lift. Third, the extra Higgs doublets and U(1) factors must decouple compatibly with observational bounds — the companion paper Buican et al. (JHEP 01 (2007) 107) derived topological conditions on the embedding that select hypercharge as the only light U(1), illustrating how compactification constrains the local model. The question sits inside the central program of string phenomenology: whether a fully realistic Standard Model vacuum of string theory with stabilized moduli can be constructed at all.

Problem Statement

Can the local D3-brane Standard-Model construction of Verlinde and Wijnholt — the MSSM quiver (with its extended Higgs sector and extra U(1) factors) on a partial resolution of a del Pezzo 8 singularity at an A2A_2 complex-structure degeneration — be completed into a fully consistent string compactification? A complete affirmative answer must provide, as jointly necessary parts of one objective: (1) an explicit embedding of the singularity with its fractional branes into a compact Calabi-Yau threefold (with orientifold planes and, if used, flavour branes — additional branes that extend only flavour symmetries of the quiver) satisfying all global consistency conditions — cancellation of Ramond-Ramond (RR) tadpoles (the total D-brane charge must be cancelled by fluxes and orientifold charge), Freed-Witten anomaly cancellation (each brane's worldvolume flux must cancel the pullback of the background B-field), and K-theory constraints on D-brane charges — such that hypercharge survives as the only light unbroken U(1) compatible with the Standard Model spectrum; (2) stabilization of all closed-string moduli (dilaton, complex structure, Kähler) with the visible singularity remaining in the decoupling regime and the decoupling scale stated, together with the induced pattern of soft supersymmetry-breaking terms, including a controlled computation of the contributions that in the local model arise from auxiliary fields of closed-string hypermultiplets appearing in D-terms; and (3) demonstration that the resulting low-energy theory — the extra Higgs doublets and the extra U(1) factors being decoupled dynamically or by controlled limits, at a stated scale — is the MSSM, with the extra states satisfying the current observational bounds on such states (no additional light states, and no unsuppressed flavour-changing neutral currents or electric dipole moments) and the visible-sector masses and couplings consistent with observed values. A no-go result — a demonstration that these parts cannot be jointly satisfied (for instance, an obstruction to embedding the singularity consistently with all global conditions, or to decoupling the extra Higgs/U(1) states) — likewise counts as a complete answer.
