Witten's 1998 AdS/CFT analysis (arXiv:hep-th/9803131) identified the Hawking–Page transition of anti-de Sitter space with the confinement/deconfinement transition of large-N gauge theory, and proposed a holographic dual of four-dimensional pure Yang–Mills: type IIA string theory on the near-horizon geometry of N D4-branes wrapped on a circle with antiperiodic fermions. Two companion issues that analysis raised have since been settled by later work: the center-symmetry puzzle (U(1) versus ) was resolved by Aharony and Witten through D-instanton effects, and the black-hole entropy constant is fixed by the standard dictionary through boundary-theory data; the leading large-N glueball spectrum, meanwhile, has been computed at strong coupling (). What remains open is the core of the proposal itself: establishing (or refuting) that the wrapped-D4 system flows at long distances to pure Yang–Mills with the Kaluza–Klein tower decoupled, exhibiting asymptotic freedom — the exponentially small mass scale as demanded by dimensional transmutation — and computing the -dependence of physical quantities. All of these require control of string theory near the extremal-D4 singularity, which is still lacking.
Background
The AdS/CFT correspondence (also called gauge/gravity duality) conjectures an exact equivalence between certain quantum field theories and quantum gravity in a higher-dimensional spacetime. The canonical example relates four-dimensional N = 4 super Yang–Mills theory — a maximally supersymmetric, conformal gauge theory with gauge group SU(N) — to type IIB string theory on the product of five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space (AdS, the maximally symmetric solution of Einstein's equations with negative cosmological constant) and a five-sphere, with N units of Ramond–Ramond five-form flux (Ramond–Ramond fields are the antisymmetric tensor fields of string theory, sourced by D-branes). The bulk curvature radius in string units grows as , where is the ’t Hooft coupling, so at large N and large the bulk is weakly curved and well described by classical supergravity; strongly coupled gauge-theory dynamics is then encoded in classical geometry.
Witten's 1998 paper (the source) applied this dictionary to thermal physics. Quantum gravity in AdS has a first-order transition between a thermal gas and a black hole, known as the Hawking–Page transition; Witten argued that under the correspondence this is the confinement/deconfinement transition of the boundary gauge theory. In the boundary language, deconfinement coincides with spontaneous breaking of the center symmetry of SU(N) (the subgroup of the gauge group that acts trivially on all fields), whose order parameter is the Polyakov loop — the trace of the holonomy of the gauge field around the thermal circle; the confined phase exhibits an area law for spatial Wilson loops (Wilson loops are closed-line gauge-field observables; an area law means their expectation value falls exponentially with the enclosed area, signaling magnetic confinement) and a mass gap (all physical excitations strictly massive). In the dual, these properties follow from the topology of the dominant bulk solution, the boundedness of the metric coefficient along spatial directions, and the discreteness of wave-equation spectra on the bulk geometry. Within this framework the open questions the source raised concern the proposal the paper made for four-dimensional pure Yang–Mills theory itself.
For pure Yang–Mills theory in four dimensions — the simplest setting exhibiting confinement, asymptotic freedom, and a mass gap, and the large-N backbone of QCD — the source proposed the wrapped D4-brane model. A D4-brane is a five-dimensional extended object of type IIA string theory on which open strings can end; N coincident D4-branes support a five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory on their worldvolume, itself the circle compactification of the six-dimensional maximally supersymmetric (0,2) theory living on M5-branes (five-branes of M-theory, the strong-coupling limit of type IIA string theory). Wrapping the D4-branes on a spatial circle of radius with antiperiodic boundary conditions for fermions (a Scherk–Schwarz construction, i.e. supersymmetry breaking by boundary conditions around the circle) breaks all supersymmetry: fermions get tree-level masses of order , and the remaining superpartners are expected to pick up one-loop masses, so at energies well below the Kaluza–Klein scale (the mass scale of modes with momentum on the circle) the worldvolume theory is four-dimensional pure Yang–Mills with coupling ( the supersymmetry-preserving circle). The conjecture is that the large-N limit of this theory is described by type IIA string theory on the near-horizon geometry of the non-extremal D4 solution (eq. (4.8) of the source), whose string coupling is of order 1/N: confinement, the mass gap, the dependence on the θ-angle (the topological coupling of the Yang–Mills action) with N vacua, and a leading glueball spectrum (glueballs are gluon bound states) are all visible at leading order in this background.
What remains unresolved is the role of the ’t Hooft coupling at the compactification scale, . Supergravity is reliable only for . But pure Yang–Mills generates its mass scale by dimensional transmutation: at one loop , so the regime in which the dual really describes four-dimensional Yang–Mills — with the Kaluza–Klein tower and the superpartners parametrically heavier than the confinement scale — requires small. As the geometry degenerates toward the singularity of the extremal D4-brane metric at , where neither curvature nor string coupling is small and no controlled worldsheet description (quantization of strings with Ramond–Ramond backgrounds) is known. The source's own formulation of the task: to understand large-N gauge theories in this framework, ‘one would want, from this point of view, to show that there is no singularity as a function of η, except at η = 0, and to exhibit asymptotic freedom and compute the masses for small η.’
Problem Statement
Establish, or refute, Witten's wrapped-D4-brane conjecture: that type IIA string theory on the near-horizon geometry of N D4-branes wrapped on a circle with supersymmetry-breaking (antiperiodic) spin structure — the ten-dimensional background of eq. (4.8) of the source, that is, the near-horizon decoupled limit of the Euclidean non-extremal D4-brane solution supported by Ramond–Ramond flux, written in variables in which the metric is independent of N while the string coupling is of order 1/N — is the holographic dual of four-dimensional large-N pure Yang–Mills at long distances. In terms of the ’t Hooft coupling at the compactification scale, , the required results are:
- Flow to pure Yang–Mills: show that the Kaluza–Klein tower on the circle and the scalar and fermionic superpartners of the gluon decouple at long distances, so that the confinement scale is parametrically below the Kaluza–Klein scale and the long-distance theory is pure Yang–Mills (or demonstrate that they fail to decouple, refuting the conjecture).
- Smoothness in : show that no singularity of the string background develops as a function of except at , where the extremal-fourbrane singularity at reflects the classical U(N) symmetry of coincident fourbranes.
- Asymptotic freedom and dimensional transmutation: demonstrate that as the physical mass scale is exponentially small, , with the exponent fixed by the one-loop Yang–Mills beta function.
- -dependence of observables: compute physical quantities — the glueball spectrum, the string tension, and thermodynamic observables — as functions of across the interpolating region and in particular at small , where currently only the strong-coupling () supergravity values are known.
- Mass gap beyond the free-field level: establish the mass gap of the dual as an interacting statement, beyond the quadratic-fluctuation (free dilaton) analysis of the source, including string-loop () and corrections.
These deliverables jointly verify a single scientific claim — that this string background computes pure Yang–Mills observables — so on the affirmative branch a resolution of any subset without the others leaves the conjecture unverified. A refutation of the conjecture is itself a complete resolution of the problem. The source's companion issues concerning the thermal N = 4 analysis — the entropy normalization and the center-symmetry group — have been resolved by later work; they are not part of this problem.
