Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride hosts flat Chern bands at zero magnetic field, and at fields of a few tesla it realizes eight fractional Chern insulator (FCI) states, identified by local compressibility spectroscopy. The 2021 discovery paper left a precise set of open questions that remain the obstacle to understanding what topological order the flat bands of MATBG actually stabilize: the quasiparticle charge and braiding statistics of the observed FCIs (especially the exotic states with coprime denominators of the Wannier-diagram quantum numbers tt and ss, and the symmetry-broken FCIs with no fractional-quantum-Hall analogue), their spin/valley (isospin) polarization, the microscopic classification of the exotic coprime states, the realization of FCIs at zero magnetic field in MATBG itself, and the nature of the quantum phase transitions in the close competition between FCIs and nearby charge density wave and symmetry-broken Chern insulator states. These MATBG-specific questions remain open.

Background

A fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state is a topological phase of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field, in which electron-electron interactions trap a fraction of magnetic flux per electron and produce fractionally charged quasiparticles with anyonic exchange statistics. A fractional Chern insulator (FCI) is the lattice analogue: instead of a nearly dispersionless Landau level filled by magnetic flux, a nearly flat band with nonzero Chern number (an integer topological invariant counting the Berry curvature winding over the Brillouin zone) is fractionally filled by interactions alone. Whether a partially filled Chern band actually stabilizes an FCI, rather than a trivial charge density wave (CDW), depends sensitively on the band's quantum geometry — the distribution of Berry curvature and the quantum metric (the companion quantity measuring the real-space spread of the Bloch wavefunctions) over the Brillouin zone, which should mimic that of a lowest Landau level.

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), two graphene sheets twisted by about 1.1∘1.1^\circ, has moiré bands that are exceptionally flat; when one sheet is aligned with the hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate, the substrate breaks sublattice symmetry and the flat bands acquire Chern numbers C=±1C=\pm 1 already at zero magnetic field. The interlayer tunnelling amplitudes at the AA- and AB-stacked regions, w0w_0 and w1w_1, control how uniform the Berry curvature is: a measure of the inhomogeneity σ(F)\sigma(F) grows with w0/w1w_0/w_1, and large σ(F)\sigma(F) in typical devices favours symmetry-broken trivial phases over FCIs at zero field.

In the 2021 experiment (Xie et al., Nature 600, 439–443), scanning single-electron-transistor compressibility spectroscopy mapped the chemical potential of hBN-aligned MATBG versus carrier density and magnetic field. Each incompressible state appears as a straight line in the density–field (Wannier) diagram, labelled by a pair of quantum numbers (t,s)(t,s): the slope tt fixes the Hall response through the Středa formula (σxy=e ∂n/∂B\sigma_{xy}=e\,\partial n/\partial B), and the intercept ss is the charge bound per moiré unit cell. Gapped states with fractional ss fall into three classes: CDWs (t=0t=0, fractional ss), symmetry-broken Chern insulators (SBCIs — integer t≠0t\ne 0 with fractional ss, i.e. topological states that enlarge or fold the moiré unit cell), and FCIs (fractional tt and fractional ss). Eight FCI states were observed, the first emerging at 5 T; their appearance coincided with the disappearance of nearby CDW states, and analysis of the Hofstadter spectrum (the fractal miniband structure a lattice develops under rational magnetic flux) showed that the role of the weak field is merely to redistribute the Berry curvature of the native Chern bands into a geometry favourable for FCIs. Theory (exact diagonalization and density-matrix-renormalization-group studies of microscopic MATBG models) confirms a CDW-to-FCI transition as w0/w1w_0/w_1 or magnetic flux is tuned, near w0/w1≈0.7w_0/w_1\approx 0.7, with typical experimental devices near w0/w1≈0.8w_0/w_1\approx 0.8. Methods capable of resolving an FCI's quasiparticle charge and exchange statistics include local charge sensing, shot noise, thermodynamic or entropy probes, and interferometry adapted to the moiré superlattice, as well as many-body calculations, though none has yet yielded such a determination for a MATBG FCI state.

Three features of the experiment made the observation simultaneously firm in identification and unresolved in nature. First, identification of a state as an FCI rests only on the Středa-formula slope, so the many-body wavefunction behind each state is unknown. Second, because the spin polarization of the valley-polarized Chern band is unknown, the cited exact-diagonalization study allows the FCIs to be either isospin-polarized Laughlin-like states or multicomponent (spin/valley) states, which compressibility cannot distinguish; the measured gaps (~50±2050\pm 20 µeV) are below the spin Zeeman scale (the magnetic energy gμBBg\mu_B B of an electron spin). Third, among the additional FCIs at higher field, states with coprime denominators of tt and ss — the denominator of tt and the denominator of ss sharing no common factor (for example the (−5/2,−1/5)(-5/2, -1/5) state) — fit neither the symmetry-preserving FCIs (equal denominators of tt and ss) nor the symmetry-broken FCIs (denominator of ss an integer multiple of the denominator of tt), and their origin was only speculated to involve the interplay of spin, valley and spatial (translation) symmetry — such symmetry-broken FCIs and coprime states have no analogue in the FQH system.

Problem Statement

Determine the microscopic character of the fractional Chern insulator states observed in hBN-aligned magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, and the limits of the platform, by answering the following questions left open (or directly raised) by Xie et al. (2021):

  1. Quasiparticle charge and statistics: what is the quasiparticle charge of the observed FCI states — in particular of the exotic states with coprime denominators of tt and ss and of the symmetry-broken FCIs, which have no analogue in the fractional quantum Hall system — and what are their exchange (braiding) statistics?
  2. Isospin structure: are the FCIs single-component, isospin-polarized Laughlin-like states or multicomponent (spin/valley) states, given that compressibility measurements do not probe spin or valley structure?
  3. Exotic states: what is the microscopic origin and classification of the FCI states with coprime denominators of tt and ss, which cannot be described as either symmetry-preserving or symmetry-broken FCIs?
  4. Zero-field limit: can FCIs be realized at B=0B=0 in MATBG itself? (Zero-field FCIs in alternative moiré platforms are established; the question is the MATBG route.)
  5. Phase competition: what is the nature of the quantum phase transitions and critical behaviour in the close competition between FCIs and nearby CDW/SBCI states, as tuned by magnetic field, twist-angle homogeneity, or interaction and strain parameters?

These five questions are independently answerable facets of one objective — the microscopic characterization of the fractional topological order stabilized in the flat Chern bands of MATBG and of its competition with symmetry-broken orders. A determination of any one of them resolves that facet while the others remain open.
