In the gravity dual of the chirally anomalous, cascading gauge theory on D3-branes and wrapped D5-branes at the conifold, Klebanov, Ouyang and Witten showed that the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly (the quantum breaking of the classical R-symmetry by fermion-loop triangle diagrams) appears as a classical bulk Higgs/Stueckelberg effect: the five-dimensional gauge field dual to the R-current eats the axion dual to the difference of theta angles and acquires a mass, at leading order in , corresponding (via the AdS/CFT mass-dimension relation, applied 'perhaps naively' outside an asymptotically AdS background) to an anomalous dimension of the R-current. The paper explicitly left open the field-theory understanding of this scaling, the construction of the analogous D7-brane solution on the conifold, and corrections beyond leading order. The D7-on-conifold question was later resolved at the flavor-smeared level (refs. [3, 4]), and the leading-order vector-mass derivation was completed precisely by Krasnitz (ref. [2]). The surviving open core is: derive from field theory the anomaly-induced mass/anomalous dimension of the anomalous R-current in the cascade - including its quadratic-in-, -suppressed scaling and its precise operational meaning in a non-conformal, logarithmically flowing theory - and compute the corresponding quantities beyond leading order in , on either side of the duality. No field-theory derivation of this scaling and no computation beyond leading order in are known.
Background
Gauge/gravity duality (the AdS/CFT correspondence, which relates certain quantum field theories to string theory on higher-dimensional curved spacetimes) maps strongly coupled four-dimensional field-theory dynamics to classical supergravity. A central example for this problem is the conifold, a non-compact Calabi-Yau space (a complex space whose geometry preserves supersymmetry) whose base is the Einstein manifold . D3-branes (three-space-dimensional extended objects of string theory) placed at the tip of the conifold are dual to an superconformal gauge theory - a scale-invariant theory with one supersymmetry - with four chiral bifundamental superfields , (superfields transforming in the fundamental representation of one gauge group and the anti-fundamental of the other; Klebanov and Witten). Adding D5-branes wrapped on the two-sphere inside ('fractional branes') breaks conformality: the dual supergravity backgrounds of Klebanov-Tseytlin and Klebanov-Strassler describe a cascading theory in which the two gauge couplings run logarithmically toward each other and, when they meet, Seiberg duality (an exact equivalence in gauge theories relating with flavors to ) trades for , the ranks cascading step by step toward the infrared (low energies).
The classical symmetry of this quiver gauge theory (a gauge theory whose gauge groups and matter content are encoded in a diagram of nodes and arrows; the R-symmetry rotates the supercharges and, correspondingly, the bifundamental fermions) is broken by the Adler-Bell-Jackiw chiral anomaly (the quantum breaking of a classical axial symmetry through fermion-loop triangle diagrams) to a discrete : an R-rotation by shifts the two theta angles (the vacuum-angle parameters multiplying in the gauge action) oppositely, , and the divergence of the R-current is fixed by the anomaly equation , where and are the field strengths of the two gauge groups. Klebanov, Ouyang and Witten ('A Gravity Dual of the Chiral Anomaly', 2002; KOW below) showed that this quantum anomaly is encoded classically in the dual supergravity: the Ramond-Ramond two-form potential (an antisymmetric-tensor gauge field of type IIB supergravity, the low-energy limit of type IIB string theory) , with the normalized two-form of the wrapped two-sphere and an angular coordinate of , is not invariant under the geometric rotation of (the geometric counterpart of the R-symmetry), which reproduces the anomaly coefficients exactly. Moreover, the anomalous breaking appears in the bulk as spontaneous breaking by a Stueckelberg/Higgs mechanism (a gauge field acquiring a mass by combining with a scalar while gauge invariance is preserved): the Kaluza-Klein gauge field (the vector surviving dimensional reduction of the ten-dimensional theory) dual to the R-current combines with the axion , dual to , into a gauge-invariant massive vector . This generalizes the earlier result of Bianchi, DeWolfe, Freedman and Pilch that in holographic renormalization-group flows a vector dual to a current broken by a relevant perturbation acquires , where is the warp function of the five-dimensional metric.
Computing the transverse-vector fluctuation equation at leading order in the small parameter (with the subtlety of the self-dual five-form field strength of type IIB supergravity - a field strength whose equation of motion coincides with its Bianchi identity and which must therefore be handled with care - resolved by Krasnitz's precise calculation, which exactly reproduces ), KOW found and, applying the AdS/CFT relation - which they themselves flagged as 'perhaps naive' since the cascading background is not asymptotically AdS - the anomalous dimension of the R-current. Symmetry considerations fix the weak-coupling form of this quantity: the leading correction to the current-current two-point function is a three-loop diagram made of two anomaly triangles glued together; the anomalous dimension must vanish at and be invariant under , (which exchanges the two gauge groups, one cascade step), so its lowest piece is of order ; the holographic result additionally predicts suppression by at large . KOW noted explicitly that understanding this scaling from the gauge-theory side would be interesting. In a companion orbifold example (fractional D3/D5-branes on with D7-branes, following Graña-Polchinski and Bertolini et al.), KOW also matched D7-brane-induced flavor anomalies and noted that the analogous D7-brane solution on the conifold was then unknown; that gap has since been closed at the flavor-smeared level (refs. [3, 4]) and is not part of the present problem.
Problem Statement
Give a complete, order-by-order, duality-matched account of the anomaly-induced mass of the current in the cascading conifold gauge theory, which Klebanov, Ouyang and Witten computed holographically only at leading order and explicitly did not understand from the field-theory side. Two linked deliverables serve this single objective:
(1) Field-theory derivation. Determine, from the gauge theory, the anomalous dimension and two-point function of the anomalous R-current , respecting the exact constraints: the anomaly equation (with , the two gauge groups' field strengths), vanishing at , and invariance under , . This deliverable has three separately enumerated parts: (1a) the computation: state precisely what quantity is computed (operator, scheme, scale); (1b) the comparison: state whether, and in what precise sense, the computed quantity reproduces the strong-coupling holographic scaling with its suppression; (1c) the interpretation: clarify the operational meaning of a current anomalous dimension in a non-conformal theory with logarithmically running couplings, given that the AdS/CFT mass-dimension relation was applied outside an asymptotically AdS background and that the careful leading-order treatment shows the responsible mass term is -suppressed at high momentum. If the controlled field-theory computation does not reproduce the holographic scaling, or yields no well-defined current anomalous dimension once the non-conformal definition is pinned down, report that outcome together with the replacement observable (if any) and the quantitative mismatch.
(2) Beyond leading order, in two separately enumerated parts: (2a) [mandatory] Compute the anomaly-induced vector mass or R-current two-point function at the next nontrivial order in the cascade parameter (with the self-dual five-form constraint and metric/Ramond-Ramond mixing handled consistently, and reducing in the limit to the known leading-order result and the relation), so that the comparison invoked in (1) is meaningful beyond leading order. (2b) [optional] Characterize the behavior outside the perturbative regime by stating one definite qualitative behavior of the observable computed in (1) or (2a) in that regime, with its supporting reasoning.
The source's third open item - constructing a supergravity solution with D7-branes on the conifold and checking the flavor anomaly relations in it - was resolved by later work at the flavor-smeared level (refs. [3, 4, 5]) and is therefore not part of this problem.
