Liu and Wilczek (Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 047002 (2003)) proposed the interior-gap superfluid: a spatially uniform paired state of two fermion species with mismatched Fermi surfaces in which pairing carves a gap inside the interior of the larger Fermi ball while its outer surface stays gapless, so that a superfluid and a normal Fermi liquid coexist in the same ground state. The paper left the conditions for realizing this state open: it acknowledged that its extension to electron gases with two bands (a single conserved total density, band-minimum energy offsets, nonparabolic dispersions, and density-driven transitions to conventional BCS order) and its competition with general standing-wave and crystalline LOFF-type (Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell) order beyond the single-plane-wave ansatz actually compared remain to be settled, and it asserted quantitative experimental feasibility over realistic couplings, densities, and mass ratios, and indicated a finite-temperature two-fluid phenomenology with dissipation from the gapless excitations, without establishing either. Two decades of follow-up work established model-level stability criteria (a large mass ratio plus momentum-dependent attraction; plain contact interactions destabilize the gapless state through a negative superfluid density), generalized the state to breached-pair superfluidity with proposed realizations in dense quark matter (QCD) and in optical lattices, and produced degenerate mass-imbalanced Fermi-Fermi mixtures (Li-K, Dy-K) - but no system has yet realized the state, the promised two-band electron-gas phase diagram was never completed, and the competition with crystalline order and the finite-temperature transport phenomenology remain open. The problem is to determine, with quantitative phase diagrams and observable signatures, in which realistic physical systems, if any, the interior-gap/breached-pair superfluid is the stable ground state.
Background
Pairing of fermions whose Fermi surfaces do not match is a recurring problem that spans ultracold atomic gases, superconductors in magnetic fields, multi-band metals, and dense quark matter - matter made of deconfined quarks, expected in neutron-star cores, whose pairing physics is described by QCD (quantum chromodynamics, the theory of the strong interaction). In BCS (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) theory, fermions of two species form Cooper pairs of zero total momentum out of states near a shared Fermi surface - the boundary, in momentum space, between filled and empty single-particle states. If the two species have different densities or effective masses, their Fermi surfaces separate and the usual pairing instability weakens. Two classic escape routes are known. The LOFF state (Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell) pairs fermions at nonzero total momentum, producing an order parameter - the gap function that measures superconducting order - that varies in space: a single plane wave in the simplest ansatz, or a superposition of several momenta forming standing-wave or crystalline patterns. The Sarma state instead keeps zero-momentum pairing but leaves a shell of quasiparticles (the elementary excitations of the paired state) gapless; in the simplest model (equal masses, contact attraction, fixed spin populations) it is unstable - a maximum of the free energy rather than a minimum.
Liu and Wilczek proposed a third possibility for species of different masses with Fermi momenta : the pairing interaction carves a gap into the interior of the larger (heavier-species) Fermi ball near the smaller Fermi surface, while the outer surface of the ball remains gapless. The resulting interior-gap state is spatially uniform, contains a superfluid and a normal Fermi liquid simultaneously, and has both gapped and gapless quasiparticle branches; for charged fermions it would be a material that is superconducting and metallic at the same time. In a variational BCS treatment with an attraction restricted to a momentum strip around the smaller Fermi surface, they derived a critical coupling below which no interior gap forms, with as the mass ratio , so the state is in principle accessible at weak coupling.
The paper's closing discussion acknowledged two open issues and indicated two further directions: (a) realization in electron gases, where the two species are electrons from different bands and only their total density is conserved - so one must fix a single density and an energy offset between band minima rather than two independent chemical potentials, dispersions need not be parabolic, and density-driven phase transitions (for example between interior-gap and conventional BCS order) can occur - an analysis explicitly deferred to a future publication; (b) the competition with more elaborate position-dependent order, since only the simplest single-plane-wave LOFF state was compared, while standing-wave and crystalline pairing patterns are known to be favorable in some models of dense QCD; (c) quantitative experimental feasibility, which the paper asserted optimistically rather than tested - it predicted that 'interior gap superfluidity will be realized in a two-species mixture of fermionic cold atoms with different mass', proposed 6Li-40K, and estimated a transition temperature of the same order as for conventional resonant gases - leaving the assessment over realistic ranges of scattering length, density, and mass ratio to later work; and (d) the finite-temperature phenomenology, where the paper noted that a large manifold of low-energy normal-state excitations coexists with superfluidity and that 'the appropriate description will involve a two-fluid model incorporating dissipation' (superfluid and normal components flowing with independent velocities), without developing that description.
Subsequent work transformed the stability question, which is the connective tissue of all four items. The superfluid density - the response of the condensate to a current, whose negativity signals an instability - of a gapless paired state depends sensitively on the momentum structure of the attraction and on the thermodynamic ensemble (fixed separate chemical potentials versus fixed particle numbers). The follow-up literature converged on the following picture: the state proposed by Liu and Wilczek belongs to a broader class now called breached-pair superfluidity, with one (BP1) or two (BP2) gapless Fermi surfaces; stable breached-pair states exist at model level when the mass ratio is large and the attraction is momentum-dependent (for example the strip interaction of the original paper), while idealized contact interactions are insufficient; equal-mass population-imbalanced gases instead show real-space phase separation between a superfluid and a normal component. What remains unresolved is whether any realistic physical system satisfies the stability criteria and exhibits the state.
Problem Statement
Determine whether the interior-gap (breached-pair) superfluid - a spatially uniform paired state of two fermion species with mismatched Fermi surfaces, having both gapped and gapless quasiparticle branches and coexisting superfluid and normal-Fermi-liquid components - can be the stable ground state of a realistic physical system, and complete the corresponding phase diagram and phenomenology. The objective comprises the four directions discussed above. A negative outcome counts as resolution where appropriate, so a quantitative demonstration that no realistic system satisfies the stability criteria, that a phase diagram admits no stable interior-gap region, or that the two-fluid description collapses to a conventional one resolves the corresponding direction as fully as a positive result. 'The corresponding phase diagram' above is the phase diagram of the system under study; for the two-band electron gas of direction (1) it is the diagram in the plane of total density and band-minimum offset. (1) Two-band electron systems: analyze interior-gap ordering for electrons from two bands where, unlike the atomic case with separately conserved species, a single total density and an energy offset between band minima are fixed and the dispersions need not be parabolic; map the phase diagram as a function of density and offset, including the loci of density-driven transitions between interior-gap and conventional BCS-type (Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer) order. This analysis was explicitly promised by the source and never delivered. (2) Competing order: compare the interior-gap state not only against the single-plane-wave LOFF ansatz (the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell state of pairing at nonzero total momentum, whose order parameter is a single plane wave) but against general standing-wave and crystalline position-dependent pairing states, establishing the true phase boundaries. (3) Feasibility: determine the ranges of coupling (scattering length, the standard low-energy measure of the interaction strength in atomic gases), density, mass ratio, and interaction momentum-structure for which the state is thermodynamically stable in a realizable system, and identify observable signatures. (4) Finite temperature: develop the quantitative two-fluid description (superfluid and normal components with independent velocities), including dissipation from the extensive manifold of gapless excitations and the resulting transport properties.
