Half-BPS boundary conditions of four-dimensional super Yang–Mills theory are labeled by a triple : a Nahm-pole homomorphism , an unbroken gauge subgroup , and a three-dimensional superconformal field theory with global symmetry living at the boundary. Gaiotto and Witten, who constructed this family in 2009, explicitly deferred the question of how electric–magnetic -duality acts on it. Their direct sequel resolved major parts of that deferral: it reduced the -dual of a general boundary condition to the three-dimensional mirror of a composite boundary theory , resolved the coincident D5-brane ordering limit, incorporated the four-dimensional -angle and , and constructed the duals of all brane-constructible boundary conditions. What remains open is the general interacting case together with its proof-level establishment: for a boundary condition whose is an arbitrary interacting 3d SCFT, not assumed to admit a Lagrangian or brane construction, no explicit construction of the -dual is known; the required 3d mirror symmetry for general such SCFTs is unsolved; exact superconformality of the coupled bulk–boundary system is argued only perturbatively; and the duality statements remain conjectures tested case by case through protected observables such as supersymmetric indices and boundary anomalies.
Background
Four-dimensional super Yang–Mills (SYM) theory is the maximally supersymmetric non-abelian gauge theory, with gauge group (for example ) and complexified coupling , where is the topological -angle. It is invariant under the Montonen–Olive electric–magnetic duality ; in particular the -transformation exchanges electric and magnetic variables and maps to its Langlands-dual group (the group obtained from by exchanging long and short roots, e.g. ). Placing the theory on a half-space while preserving half of its sixteen supercharges (a "half-BPS" boundary condition) is possible only for boundary conditions of a very restricted type. Gaiotto and Witten constructed and classified these in 2009: a general half-BPS boundary condition is labeled by a triple . Here is a homomorphism of Lie algebras that permits the three adjoint scalar fields normal to the boundary to carry a pole at governed by Nahm's equations — the equations (with gauge covariantization) originally introduced to construct BPS monopoles — whose pole type is fixed by ; the gauge group is thereby broken near the boundary to a subgroup ; and is an arbitrary three-dimensional superconformal field theory (SCFT) with global symmetry, to which the boundary gauge fields couple.
Three-dimensional theories have two distinguished branches of supersymmetric vacua — the Higgs branch, parametrized by vacuum expectation values of scalar fields in hypermultiplets (the matter multiplets), and the Coulomb branch, parametrized by vector-multiplet scalars and monopole charges — and mirror symmetry is the duality of such theories that exchanges the two branches. Deformation parameters also split into a triple of Fayet–Iliopoulos (FI) parameters (constant shifts of the hypermultiplet moment map allowed by gauge invariance) and mass parameters (vacuum expectation values of scalars in weakly gauged flavor-symmetry vector multiplets). The construction was motivated by Type IIB string theory: with D3-branes (three-space-dimensional extended objects on which open strings end) ending on D5- and NS5-branes (five-dimensional branes carrying Dirichlet and Neveu–Schwarz string-theory charges respectively), the D5 side produces Nahm-pole/Dirichlet-type conditions and the NS5 side produces Neumann-type conditions coupled to boundary matter, and -duality of the boundary conditions is inherited from the self-duality of Type IIB string theory exchanging D5- and NS5-branes.
The 2009 paper deliberately deferred the central question — how -duality acts on this family — noting the analogy with Kramers–Wannier duality exchanging ordered and disordered boundary conditions of the Ising model, and warning that the full complexities of three-dimensional quantum field theory enter through . The announced sequel, also by Gaiotto and Witten (2009), resolved much of this: it showed that the -dual of a boundary condition built from is governed by a composite three-dimensional theory (the diagonal -gauging of together with a canonical auxiliary SCFT determined by the Nahm pole; for trivial this auxiliary theory is the self-mirror SCFT that appears in the -dual of Dirichlet conditions), whose mirror — a 3d mirror-symmetry operation — gives the boundary SCFT of the dual condition. The theories , and were defined intrinsically for any compact using Janus configurations (field-theory backgrounds, realizable in supergravity, in which the gauge coupling varies spatially). The sequel also resolved the original paper's uncertainty about the coincident D5-brane limit (configurations whose D5-branes are wrongly ordered carry extra hypermultiplets that decouple in the coincidence limit, as the first paper had conjectured), analyzed the -angle and the action of the full (noting that for most half-BPS boundary conditions only the operation can be defined), and extended the construction to and gauge groups via orientifolds (string-theory quotients that produce these gauge groups). A companion paper treated -angle effects and the new three-dimensional Chern–Simons theories they require.
Later work confirmed and tested the framework: the half-BPS classification is treated as complete (extensions go to fewer supercharges), and the conjectured -duality action on boundary conditions is tested pair by pair through supersymmetric indices — in particular the half-index, a localization-computable count of boundary-local BPS operators — boundary anomalies, and holography. However, the sequel's reduction shows that constructing the dual for a fully general requires 3d mirror symmetry for arbitrary interacting 3d SCFTs, including non-Lagrangian ones (theories with no gauge-theory Lagrangian description), which is not known; and the equivalence statements remain conjectures supported by case-by-case checks rather than derived theorems.
Problem Statement
Determine the action of -duality on the full family of half-BPS boundary conditions of four-dimensional super Yang–Mills theory, completing the program that Gaiotto and Witten began and partially resolved. Concretely, for an arbitrary half-BPS boundary condition specified by a triple — where is an arbitrary interacting three-dimensional superconformal field theory with global symmetry, not assumed to admit a Lagrangian, quiver, or brane construction — the problem asks to: (1) construct the -dual boundary condition in the dual gauge theory, i.e., determine its Nahm-pole homomorphism , its unbroken subgroup , its boundary theory , and the induced map on deformation parameters (the FI triple , the mass parameters , and the four-dimensional -angle, including which boundary conditions admit an action of the full rather than of alone); and (2) establish the equivalence quantum mechanically — beyond the classical/semi-classical level of the original constructions — for the whole class at once rather than case by case, showing in particular that the coupled bulk–boundary system with interacting is exactly superconformal. By the established reduction, this is equivalent to solving three-dimensional mirror symmetry for arbitrary 3d SCFTs as coupled to four-dimensional gauge fields, including a constructive characterization of mirrors of non-Lagrangian theories. Answers restricted to brane-constructible or Lagrangian boundary conditions, however broad, reproduce what is already known and do not by themselves solve the problem; conversely, a demonstration that no consistent -dual exists for some admissible , if established by an explicit protected-observable mismatch shown to hold for every candidate -dual of that , would resolve the question negatively.
