In the Randjbar-Daemi-Salam-Strathdee (RSDS) model of instanton-induced compactification, eight-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to SU(2)SU(2) Yang-Mills theory admits a vacuum of the form M4×S4M^4 \times S^4 (four-dimensional Minkowski space times an internal four-sphere), supported by the classical stress tensor of a one-instanton gauge configuration and carrying chiral fermion zero modes fixed by an index theorem. The classical solution fixes the two stress-tensor constants cc (the effective four-dimensional cosmological constant) and c′c' (which fixes the internal curvature) in terms of the instanton field strength. The open question is the fully quantum version: when the compactifying stress-energy is generated by one-loop vacuum polarization (the Casimir energy of graviton, gauge and fermion fluctuations in the instanton background) rather than by a classical field configuration, cc and c′c' become dynamical outputs. No self-consistent computation of the loop-generated cc, c′c' and the back-reacted compactified geometry — including its stability and the fate of the chiral fermion zero modes — exists in the literature, despite an extensive neighbouring program (Candelas-Weinberg self-consistent dimensional reduction and its descendants) that treats quantum-induced compactification only on symmetric spaces without instanton backgrounds and without chirality.

Background

Kaluza-Klein (KK) theories realize unification by postulating that spacetime has more than four dimensions, with the extra dimensions compactified (curled up) into a small internal manifold BdB_d, so that the ground state is a product M4×BdM^4 \times B_d of four-dimensional Minkowski space and BdB_d. In spontaneous compactification such product solutions arise dynamically from the higher-dimensional field equations, the curvature of the internal space being sourced by matter stress-energy. For any product ansatz, four-dimensional Lorentz invariance forces the vacuum stress tensor to take an anisotropic form: the four-dimensional components Tab=(c/κ4)ηabT_{ab} = (c/\kappa^4)\eta_{ab} (with κ\kappa the higher-dimensional gravitational coupling and ηab\eta_{ab} the Minkowski metric) act as an effective four-dimensional cosmological constant, while the internal components Tαβ=(c′/κ4)δαβT_{\alpha\beta} = (c'/\kappa^4)\delta_{\alpha\beta} curve the internal space; the two constants cc and c′c' therefore encode the whole vacuum stress and enter the reduced Einstein equations (eqs. (3)-(6) of the source paper) that determine the internal geometry. Homogeneous gauge embeddings on coset spaces G/HG/H (spaces of cosets of a subgroup HH inside a group GG, the standard family of homogeneous internal manifolds) give an internal stress proportional to (4−d)(4-d), which vanishes for the four-dimensional internal space needed to obtain chiral fermions in four dimensions. Randjbar-Daemi, Salam and Strathdee (RSDS) instead used an SU(2)SU(2) Yang-Mills instanton — a finite-action self-dual solution of the four-dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills equations (the one-instanton or BPST configuration on S4S^4) — whose constant field-strength invariant Fˉ2\bar F^2 supplies the required stress and produces the compactification M4×S4M^4 \times S^4 with residual SO(5)SO(5) gauge symmetry (the ten massless vector fields of the compactification furnish the adjoint representation of SO(5)SO(5), the rotation group of the internal four-sphere). Here d=4d = 4 is the dimension of the internal space and the classical instanton fixes cc and c′c' as explicit multiples of κ4Fˉ2\kappa^4 \bar F^2 (in the paper's conventions c=−κ4Fˉ2/4c = -\kappa^4 \bar F^2/4 and c′=κ4Fˉ2(4−d)/(4d)c' = \kappa^4 \bar F^2 (4-d)/(4d), so that c′=0c' = 0 in the self-dual d=4d=4 case). Chiral fermions arise because the Dirac operator in an instanton background has zero modes whose net chirality is fixed by the Atiyah-Singer index theorem (which equates the difference of left- and right-handed zero modes to a topological invariant of the gauge field): NL−NR=23t(t+1)(2t+1)N_L - N_R = \frac{2}{3} t(t+1)(2t+1) for internal SU(2)SU(2) isospin tt. The source paper notes that the stress-tensor ansatz need not be supported classically: the compactifying stress-energy could be quantum — the one-loop vacuum polarization (the Casimir energy, i.e. the zero-point energy of the graviton, gauge and fermion fluctuations) in the compact background — in which case cc and c′c' are outputs of the quantum theory and must be computed self-consistently with the geometry they curve, via the semiclassical Einstein equations GMN=κ2⟨TMN⟩G_{MN} = \kappa^2 \langle T_{MN} \rangle with the one-loop expectation value of the stress tensor. This quantum-induced-compactification question was pursued on symmetric internal spaces by Candelas and Weinberg, whose 'self-consistent dimensional reduction' computes the one-loop stress of free fields (requiring a large number of matter species, and technically restricted to odd internal dimensions where the one-loop sums converge); the RSDS instanton setting — whose internal S4S^4 is even-dimensional and whose point is precisely the chiral zero modes and the instanton gauge background — was never treated, and the stability of any would-be quantum-balanced compactification is a nontrivial separate question (semiclassical tunneling instabilities, and the instability of configurations in which classical monopole stress is balanced against one-loop Casimir stress, are known in related settings).

Problem Statement

In the framework of instanton-induced compactification of Randjbar-Daemi, Salam and Strathdee — eight-dimensional Einstein gravity coupled to SU(2)SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with the one-instanton configuration on the internal four-sphere S4S^4 — the classical vacuum M4×S4M^4 \times S^4 (four-dimensional Minkowski space times S4S^4) is supported by the classical stress tensor of the gauge background, characterized in the dimensional-reduction equations (3)-(6) of the source paper by the two constants cc and c′c', where cc is the effective four-dimensional cosmological constant and c′c' fixes the internal curvature. The open problem is the quantum version of this construction: when the compactifying stress-energy is of quantum origin — the one-loop vacuum polarization (the Casimir energy of the quantum fluctuations of the graviton, Yang-Mills and fermion fields) in the instanton background — rather than a classical field configuration, determine self-consistently the loop-generated constants cc and c′c' and the back-reacted compactified geometry that solve the semiclassical Einstein equations GMN=κ2⟨TMN⟩1-loopG_{MN} = \kappa^2 \langle T_{MN} \rangle_{\text{1-loop}} (the Einstein equations sourced by the one-loop quantum expectation value of the stress tensor, with κ\kappa the eight-dimensional gravitational coupling). The single objective — the existence and structure of a self-consistent quantum-induced instanton compactification — comprises the following jointly posed sub-questions: (i) the renormalized one-loop stress tensor on the instanton background (noting that the even-dimensional internal sphere places this outside the finiteness regime of the Candelas-Weinberg mechanism, so a renormalization prescription for cc and c′c' must be specified); (ii) the self-consistency equations and their solution, i.e. whether a solution with compact internal space exists at all, and with what four-dimensional cosmological constant and what relation between the internal radius and the instanton scale; (iii) the stability of that solution (including the known semiclassical tunneling instabilities); and (iv) whether the topologically protected chiral fermion zero modes and the residual gauge symmetry survive the quantum back-reaction. Whether a self-consistent quantum-induced instanton compactification exists within the semiclassical treatment for the stated class of fields — and, if it does, what its structure is — remains open.
