The two-dimensional string black hole constructed by Witten (1991) as the gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten coset has, in its Lorentzian continuation and at leading order in the semiclassical expansion, a curvature singularity at on which the tachyon field diverges logarithmically. Witten asked whether this divergence is a genuine physical instability of the exact coset conformal field theory or an artifact of the expansion, together with the companion questions of how the black hole is described nonperturbatively by the matrix model (true absorption followed by Hawking re-emission versus reflection from a barrier), what happens beyond , and what holds at the self-contained bosonic-string point (), which lies at strong world-sheet coupling. The Euclidean (cigar) theory is exactly solved by the Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov sine-Liouville duality and has a matrix-model dual, and the early free-fermion analyses found the singularity smoothed in the matrix model; the Lorentzian exact description, however, remains unsettled, with competing proposals (folded strings filling the interior, a winding-condensate puncture, nonperturbative effects making the exact Hartle-Hawking state singular at the horizon) and no controlled, generally accepted construction that decides the status of the singularity.
Background
Two-dimensional string theory is the lowest-dimensional setting in which string propagation on a curved spacetime can be solved exactly, and it is the standard laboratory for questions about black holes in string theory. In the world-sheet formulation, a string background is a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT); here the relevant one is the coset , obtained from the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model on the non-compact group at level (an exactly solvable CFT whose level plays the role of an inverse string-scale coupling) by gauging a subgroup. Witten showed in 1991 that this coset describes a string propagating on a two-dimensional black hole spacetime: a curved target space with a linearly growing dilaton (the scalar field that sets the local string coupling ), an event horizon, and, in Lorentzian signature, a singularity. The same classical solution had been found independently by Mandal, Sengupta and Wadia from the equations of two-dimensional string theory, and it is often called the Witten or MSW black hole. Its central charge is , so at one has : the coset alone cancels the reparametrization-ghost contribution and defines a self-contained bosonic-string background; but is not small there, i.e. lies in a strong world-sheet coupling regime where the semiclassical expansion is not controlled.
In two spacetime dimensions the graviton has no propagating degrees of freedom, and the only propagating string mode is the tachyon, a scalar field (so named because a negative mass-squared makes the perturbative vacuum unstable in higher dimensions; in two dimensions it is simply the physical particle of the theory). In coordinates adapted to the Lorentzian black hole, the leading-order (in ) solution has a curvature singularity at , and the tachyon profile diverges there logarithmically, . Because this divergence is controlled by short-distance world-sheet dynamics at strong coupling, Witten emphasized that perturbation theory cannot decide whether it is real: the question is whether the exact coset CFT, which is defined nonperturbatively in (the squared string length, so that nonperturbative-in- effects are string-scale effects invisible to any fixed-order expansion), actually contains this instability, or whether the exact tachyon background and the geometry are regular and the divergence is an artifact of the expansion. The Euclidean continuation of the same coset gives the 'cigar' geometry, a trumpet-shaped space whose circle smoothly caps off at the tip, so the Euclidean horizon is regular. The Lorentzian coordinate chart divides the black-hole spacetime into several regions (two asymptotic exterior regions, the black-hole and white-hole interiors, and the regions V and VI beyond the singularity, in the source paper's labelling), and, because the coset is constructed from the group manifold, which covers the physical black-hole patch multiple times, it is itself part of the open question whether the physical target space involves a single copy of these regions, several copies, or the universal cover of the group.
The nonperturbative definition of two-dimensional string theory in a linear-dilaton vacuum is the matrix model: a quantum mechanics of a single Hermitian matrix which, in the double-scaling limit , reproduces the full genus expansion and certain nonperturbative effects of the string theory, and is exactly solvable in terms of free fermions. Its essential parameter is the Fermi level , which plays the role of a cosmological constant for the tachyon and fixes the mass of the two-dimensional black hole. How this matrix model describes string propagation on the black-hole coset background, and in particular whether its unitary S-matrix describes genuine black-hole formation and evaporation (absorption followed by Hawking re-emission of thermal radiation) or merely reflection from the tachyon potential barrier outside the would-be horizon, was left open in the source and is part of the question; the role of in that comparison, including the proposed capture criterion relating incident-wave frequency, amplitude and , is one of its facets.
Two later results organize the modern understanding. First, the Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (FZZ) duality states that the Euclidean black hole coset is exactly equivalent to sine-Liouville theory: a linear dilaton theory deformed by a potential built from the field dual (in the sense of -duality, exchanging momentum and winding of strings around a circle of radius ) to the cigar angular direction; winding-number-one operators condense, and this condensation is the nonperturbative-in- correction to the cigar geometry. Second, an exact reflection coefficient for scattering off the cigar, including all nonperturbative effects, is known and exhibits strong ultraviolet/infrared mixing. Both are results about the Euclidean theory; the Lorentzian black hole is obtained by analytic continuation, and the continuation of the winding condensate is precisely what has resisted a controlled description. Relatedly, the deformation of a two-dimensional CFT by the irrelevant operator (the product of the holomorphic and antiholomorphic stress-tensor components) has been connected to these backgrounds and provides a modern organizing principle for their nonperturbative completion.
Problem Statement
Determine the exact, nonperturbative-in- fate of the two-dimensional Lorentzian string black hole described by the coset conformal field theory, as posed in Witten's 1991 paper "String theory and black holes":
(1) (Core) Decide whether the logarithmically divergent tachyon at the Lorentzian singularity is a genuine physical instability of the exact coset CFT or an artifact of the semiclassical expansion. This requires a controlled exact description of the Lorentzian theory (the naive continuation of the sine-Liouville operator is known to be problematic), and the computation of the exact tachyon profile or of exact observables (spectrum, expectation values, reflection and transmission amplitudes) in the vicinity of , including whether and how the exact theory continues through (the regions beyond the singularity and the multiple-cover versus universal-cover question for the manifold).
(2) (Companion, from the same source) Establish the precise relation between the nonperturbative matrix-model S-matrix and black-hole formation and evaporation in this background: does the unitary matrix-model scattering describe true absorption by the black hole followed by Hawking re-emission, or reflection from the tachyon potential barrier outside the would-be Schwarzschild radius? This includes fixing the role of the black-hole mass / cosmological parameter and the fate of the proposed capture criterion relating frequency, amplitude and .
(3) (Recorded sub-question) At the self-contained bosonic-string point (), which lies at strong world-sheet coupling where the expansion fails, the quantities controlled by short-distance world-sheet dynamics — namely the exact radius of the circle at infinity and the exact Euclidean black-hole temperature — are already determined by the exactly-solved Euclidean (cigar) theory.
Settling (1) would determine the status of the classical singularity and of the black-hole interior in this exactly solvable string background, and together with (2) whether genuine black-hole formation and evaporation are realized in the matrix-model description of the theory.
