Nekrasov and Witten (2010) reformulated the Omega-deformation of four-dimensional gauge theory - the equivariant rotation of with parameters underlying instanton counting - in a form valid away from the fixed points, and used coisotropic A-branes on the Hitchin moduli space to explain, within one framework, both the quantization of Seiberg-Witten integrable systems and the relation to Liouville conformal blocks. The construction rests, however, on small- asymptotics, abelianized descriptions, and rank-one Chan-Paton bundles. The questions the paper left open are: computing the exact cigar-tip couplings and hence the exact Chan-Paton curvature at finite ; controlling the change-of-variables picture at the zeroes of the rotation vector field; developing the missing theory of coisotropic A-branes of rank greater than one needed for surface operators; extending the abelianized constructions to a global nonabelian description valid near discriminant loci; deriving the projectively flat connection on the family of ground-state spaces over Teichmueller space from six dimensions with the Omega-deformation included; and computing the hermitian inner product on these spaces at finite . Later literature settled the parameter normalization (AGT) and substantially advanced the opers/surface-defect dictionary at low rank, but the microscopic brane-side core remains open.
Background
Four-dimensional gauge theories with supersymmetry have a Coulomb branch of vacua parametrized by the expectation value of an adjoint scalar field, and their low-energy dynamics is governed by the Seiberg-Witten geometry: a fibration of special-Lagrangian tori over the Coulomb branch whose periods determine the effective couplings, making the low-energy theory an integrable Hamiltonian system. The Omega-deformation, introduced by Nekrasov, couples the theory on to a background two-plane rotation with equivariant parameters ; the resulting partition function is exactly computable by localization, and in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit it encodes the quantization of the Seiberg-Witten integrable system (the Bethe/Gauge correspondence).
For theories of class - obtained by compactifying the six-dimensional theory on a Riemann surface - the Coulomb-branch geometry is the moduli space of Higgs bundles on , i.e. solutions of Hitchin's equations (a holomorphic bundle together with a Higgs field, a holomorphic one-form valued in the adjoint bundle, satisfying a moment-map condition). is hyper-Kahler with complex structures : in complex structure it carries the Hitchin fibration onto the space of Weyl-invariant holomorphic differentials on , and in complex structure it is the moduli space of flat complex-group-valued connections on . Nekrasov and Witten studied the Omega-deformed theory on , where the three-sphere degenerates into a cigar (a disk with a rotationally symmetric metric, of asymptotic radius ) times an interval. Away from the fixed points of the rotation - the zeroes of the generating vector field - the deformation can be undone by a change of variables, so quantum effects localize near the cigar tip. The effective theory is a two-dimensional sigma-model on with target .
In the A-model, the topological sigma-model twisted by a symplectic form (here a multiple of ), a boundary condition is an A-brane. Its support need not be Lagrangian: a coisotropic A-brane is space-filling and carries a Chan-Paton line bundle (whose sections are the brane's open-string states) with curvature , such that - with the background two-form field - defines an integrable complex structure; only the sum is invariant under gauge shifts of . Nekrasov and Witten argued that the boundary condition at the cigar tip produces a canonical coisotropic A-brane with proportional to , so that , the complex structure in which the Hitchin fibration is holomorphic; this identification, derived only at small , was argued to be exact by the rigidity of coisotropic-brane deformations, but was not computed from first principles. T-duality along the Hitchin fibers - the string-theoretic equivalence that exchanges momentum and winding modes along a compact direction, here applied fiber by fiber - maps to a Lagrangian brane supported on the variety of opers: opers are flat -connections whose underlying holomorphic bundle carries a distinguished full flag compatible with the connection (for they correspond to second-order scalar differential operators on ). Quantization of a Lagrangian submanifold (a choice of boundary condition at the far end of the cigar) then has a basis labeled by intersection points of with the opers, and the eigenvalues of the quantized Hitchin Hamiltonians - pullbacks of holomorphic functions on , i.e. Seiberg-Witten periods - are the values at those points. The paper constructs two explicit such boundary Lagrangians, and : in an abelianized duality frame, with special coordinates (the Seiberg-Witten periods) and conjugate torus angles along the Hitchin fibers, is defined by and by the analogous condition with in place of ; globally they are characterized by trivial-holonomy conditions on cycles of . These definitions require a choice of duality frame and therefore make sense only locally in the nonabelian case - the source paper explicitly leaves a global nonabelian description as an open problem. This is exactly the structure realized mathematically for the Gaudin model, the integrable spin chain built from the current algebra on , whose spectrum was described by opers intersecting Lagrangians in work of Feigin, Frenkel, Reshetikhin, and Toledano-Laredo.
The paper also considers surface operators - codimension-two defects of the four-dimensional theory, supported on a two-dimensional surface in spacetime, which in the two-dimensional effective description modify the Chan-Paton data at the boundary. For a surface operator inserted at a point , the resulting Chan-Paton bundle is proposed to be the restriction to of the universal Higgs bundle: the holomorphic bundle , equipped with a universal Higgs field and a hermitian metric, whose restriction to , for any , is precisely the Higgs bundle on parametrized by the point . Establishing this proposal, and the properties such bundles need in order to preserve supersymmetry under the Omega-deformation, requires precisely the theory of coisotropic A-branes of Chan-Paton rank greater than one, which the source states has not been developed.
On the conformal-field-theory side, the space of supersymmetric ground states of holomorphic half-forms (sections of a square root of the canonical bundle, the bundle of holomorphic volume forms) on the base of the Hitchin fibration is identified, via the AGT correspondence of Alday, Gaiotto, and Tachikawa, with the space of Virasoro (Liouville) conformal blocks on - the chiral building blocks of two-dimensional Liouville conformal field theory, with the Liouville coupling fixed by up to the standard sign convention. Conformal blocks are known to vary over the Teichmueller space of (the universal cover of the moduli space of complex structures of ) via a projectively flat connection - a connection whose curvature is proportional to the identity, so that parallel transport is canonical up to a phase; Nekrasov and Witten sketched how a six-dimensional perspective might explain this flatness but could not incorporate the Omega-deformation into it.
The paper is explicit that this picture is built on asymptotic and abelianized approximations, and that several of its load-bearing identifications have not been derived from the underlying microscopic theory. The problem addressed here is the completion of those microscopic foundations.
Problem Statement
The problem is to replace the asymptotic and abelianized steps of that construction by first-principles results from the microscopic theory, so that the Omega-deformation/brane picture of the gauge-integrability-Liouville correspondence becomes derived rather than conjectural. The common objective is a microscopic derivation of the canonical coisotropic brane and of the Hilbert-space structures built on it; the requested results that jointly complete this objective are:
(a) Exact tip couplings and Chan-Paton curvature: compute, from the full microscopic four-dimensional gauge theory rather than the small- asymptotics, the couplings generated at the tip of the cigar that determine the exact curvature and hence the exact of the canonical coisotropic A-brane , and thereby settle, as a corollary, whether the identification holds at finite ; this includes controlling, simultaneously, the change-of-variables description of the Omega-deformation, which is valid only away from the zeroes of the rotation vector field , and the quantum physics localized at those zeroes.
(b) Higher-rank coisotropic A-branes and surface operators: develop the theory of coisotropic A-branes with Chan-Paton bundles of rank greater than one (the source states this theory does not exist), and apply it to surface operators: determine whether the Chan-Paton bundle produced by a surface operator is the restriction of the universal Higgs bundle over , establish its behavior near the discriminant locus of the Hitchin fibration (the locus in the base where the spectral curve degenerates and additional states become massless), and establish the properties required to preserve supersymmetry under the Omega-deformation.
(c) Projectively flat connection: give a complete derivation, incorporating the Omega-deformation, of the projectively flat connection on the bundle of Hilbert spaces over the Teichmueller space of , which conformal-field-theory arguments predict and the source could only motivate through an incomplete six-dimensional sketch.
(d) Hermitian inner product: compute the explicit hermitian inner product on induced by the physical gauge theory at finite ratio - outside the large- semiclassical regime - together with its dependence on the parameters.
(e) Global nonabelian description: extend the abelianized or asymptotic constructions (the Lagrangian submanifolds and the WKB quantization conditions) to a global nonabelian description valid near the singular loci of the Coulomb branch where additional massless states appear, and determine how the quantization conditions are modified there.
The normalization mapping between gauge-theory and Liouville parameters is fixed by the AGT correspondence, and much of the low-rank opers/Gaudin dictionary has since been proven; those components are not part of the open core. The string/M-theory and six-dimensional constructions of the Omega-deformation and its quantization (references 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, 20) and the conformal-field-theory and Langlands-side conformal-block and line-operator constructions (references 10, 11, 22, 26, 27) are background to the same question: they fix the deformation, its normalization and the corresponding CFT-side structures, but they do not compute the first-principles cigar-tip couplings, the exact Chan-Paton curvature at finite , the projectively flat connection of (c), or the inner product of (d), so they do not settle (a)-(e). Each of (a)-(e) is an independent mandatory result - a complete solution must contain all five, and a result for one part does not by itself resolve another. Of the open questions listed in the opening paragraph, the change-of-variables question is the one folded into (a), where it is required jointly with the exact-coupling computation.
