Weinberg's 1992 chiral-EFT analysis of three-body interactions among nucleons and pions computed the pion–deuteron scattering length from the leading (Δ=0) chiral vertices, found the genuine three-body terms negligible for the deuteron, and was explicit about what the framework could not yet deliver: the proliferating Δ=2 counterterms, the unknown importance of three-body terms for pion scattering on nuclei heavier than the deuteron, residual short-distance sensitivity to nuclear wave functions, sigma-term isospin violation, and a fully consistent chiral treatment of vertex corrections in the dominant rescattering term. Later work (1998–2012) completed the deuteron program to few-percent accuracy — including chiral corrections to double scattering, dispersive, absorptive, Δ(1232) and isospin-breaking contributions — and extracted the pion–nucleon scattering lengths from pionic hydrogen and deuterium data. For A≥3 nuclei, however, only a leading-order, isospin-conserving treatment exists: genuine three-nucleon contributions to π–³He and π–⁴He scattering were first computed in 2011, found to be suppressed by roughly a factor of 5 per added nucleon rather than the factor of order 50 expected from Weinberg's counting, and limited by an unconstrained isovector two-nucleon contact operator; isospin violation in the three-nucleon sector and the standing ~2σ discrepancy with the most recent π–³He measurement were left unresolved, and no systematic chiral few-body treatment exists for A>4. The surviving open problem is to complete the chiral-EFT prediction of low-energy pion–nucleus observables for A≥3 — higher-order three- and four-nucleon operators, their counterterms, isospin violation, and the A-dependence of the few-nucleon suppression — to the accuracy already achieved for the deuteron.
Background
At momenta comparable to the pion mass MeV, the interactions of pions and nucleons are organized by chiral effective field theory (chiral EFT), the low-energy effective theory of QCD built on the approximate chiral symmetry of the light quarks. The dynamics is encoded in the most general effective Lagrangian of pion and nucleon fields; each interaction vertex carries an index , where counts derivatives or pion-mass insertions and the nucleon fields, and chiral invariance forbids . An irreducible time-ordered graph — one with no intermediate state consisting of nucleons only, whose energy denominators would be anomalously small — with external nucleons, connected pieces, loops, and vertices of type carries powers of small momenta (Weinberg's power counting, introduced in his 1990–1991 papers). The sum of irreducible graphs acts as a potential to be iterated in a Schrödinger equation. For pion scattering on a nucleus, the leading corrections beyond ordinary two-body pion–nucleon () scattering are therefore tree graphs built solely from vertices — involving only the axial coupling , the pion decay constant , and the pion mass — in which two nucleons and the pion interact jointly: genuine three-body contributions that involve no free parameters.
Weinberg's 1992 paper worked this out for the S-wave pion–nucleus scattering length , the threshold quantity measured through pionic atoms — Coulomb-bound –nucleus systems whose -level shifts and widths are converted into scattering lengths by Deser-type relations. For the deuteron (the bound state of one proton and one neutron) he separated the dominant rescattering (double-scattering) term, the sigma-term single-scattering piece (, the isoscalar amplitude piece proportional to the light-quark-mass matrix element in the nucleon, which breaks isospin — the approximate symmetry under proton–neutron interchange), and the genuine three-body graphs, finding the latter numerically negligible, , and a total , in agreement with the experimental value . The paper was equally explicit about what the framework could not yet deliver. First, the subleading and especially vertices contain so many free parameters — low-energy constants (LECs) not fixed by symmetry — that the effective Lagrangian alone cannot produce predictive higher-order corrections, and the two-body input must instead be taken from phenomenology and data. Second, the three-body terms that are negligible for the deuteron 'may not be' negligible for pion scattering on heavier nuclei. It also noted, more briefly, that the integrands retain some sensitivity to nuclear wave functions at short internucleon separation (only partially cancelled), that the isospin relations used to obtain pion–neutron input are broken by the sigma terms (with effects confined, to first order in quark masses, to processes involving neutral pions), and that the rescattering term should strictly include first-order corrections to the vertices, which the paper took from measured scattering lengths rather than computing chirally. These flagged limitations motivate the problem below.
Problem Statement
The 1992 source computed the leading, parameter-free three-body contributions to low-energy pion–nucleus scattering and found them negligible for the deuteron, deferring the question of heavier nuclei. Later work completed the deuteron case to few-percent accuracy. The surviving problem is:
Extend the chiral-EFT calculation of low-energy pion–nucleus scattering beyond the deuteron so that the genuine few-nucleon (three- and four-body) contributions are quantitatively controlled at the same accuracy achieved for . Concretely:
(i) compute the genuine three- and four-nucleon contributions to pion–nucleus scattering lengths (the natural benchmark systems being and ) at the next chiral order beyond the existing leading, isospin-conserving evaluation — including the isospin-violating corrections in the three-nucleon sector (pion and nucleon mass differences, isospin breaking in the scattering lengths, and virtual-photon effects, whose potentially infrared-enhanced pieces are known to cancel for the deuteron but must be re-established for );
(ii) determine or constrain the genuine few-nucleon counterterms that enter at this order — above all the isovector two-nucleon contact operator that currently dominates the uncertainty of the scattering length — using observables or theory inputs independent of the pionic-atom data being predicted;
(iii) establish, with a defensible truncation-error estimate, the -dependence of the suppression of successive few-nucleon operators, given that the one existing calculation finds a suppression of roughly a factor of 5 per added nucleon rather than the factor of order 50 expected from Weinberg's counting; and
(iv) confront the predictions with pionic-atom data (, , and modern laser spectroscopy of metastable pionic helium), including resolution of the standing discrepancy between the chiral prediction and the most recent measurement.
Deliverables (i)–(iv) are jointly required: together they constitute the resolution of the problem, and no proper subset of them resolves it. They serve one objective: a controlled chiral-EFT prediction of low-energy pion scattering on nuclei with , with a complete uncertainty budget, sufficient to check and extend the extraction of scattering lengths (and through them the pion–nucleon sigma term) from pionic atoms. The extension to nuclear targets, for which no systematic chiral few-body treatment exists, is an optional further reach under the same objective — the natural reach question the source left open — and is not required for resolution.
