The 1988 Ginzburg–Landau analysis of Abrikosov, Buzdin, Kulic and Kuptsov predicts that twin boundaries in high- cuprate superconductors can nucleate localized 'twinning-plane superconductivity' (TPS) at a temperature slightly above the bulk transition, provided the twin plane locally enhances Cooper pairing. The theory left open the inseparable questions of the electronic character of twin boundaries — transparent interface, Josephson weak link, or insulating (dielectric) barrier — and of the microscopic origin of the assumed enhancement (soft phonon modes, localized electronic states, reduced Coulomb repulsion). Whether, how, and why twin boundaries modify superconductivity locally in cuprate high- superconductors remains undetermined.
Background
High- superconductivity in the cuprates was discovered in 1986–1987, and the most studied compound, (YBCO), superconducts at about 90 K. When YBCO takes up oxygen it distorts from a tetragonal to an orthorhombic crystal structure; the orthorhombic distortion forms crystalline domains in mirror orientation, separated by twin boundaries — planar defects along the diagonal crystallographic directions, spaced typically 200–2000 Å apart in as-grown crystals. Twin boundaries can be removed by uniaxial stress (detwinning) and their spacing and arrangement can change under thermal cycling. Ginzburg–Landau (GL) theory, the standard phenomenological theory of superconductivity in which the condensate is described by a complex order parameter and a free-energy functional, had earlier been used to describe twinning-plane superconductivity (TPS) in conventional superconductors (Khlyustikov and Buzdin 1987): if a defect plane locally strengthens the pairing interaction, superconductivity can nucleate on that plane at a temperature slightly above the bulk transition temperature , forming a superconducting sheet whose order parameter decays away from the plane over the GL coherence length (the distance over which the order parameter heals) while the bulk remains normal.
Motivated by reported anomalies in the specific heat and in the upper critical field (the magnetic field at which superconductivity is destroyed) of YBCO near its transition, Abrikosov, Buzdin, Kulic and Kuptsov (1988) adapted this theory to high- superconductors. They modeled the twin plane as a delta-function enhancement of the pairing interaction, adding a term (with the Dirac delta centered on the plane) to the GL functional; is the single unknown parameter of the framework, and its microscopic calculation was recognized at the time to be possible only in model settings. They derived: a transition shift proportional to for an isolated plane, ; for a field parallel to the plane, proportional to ; further shifts of the transition for a periodic array of spacing ; and characteristic specific-heat anomalies near the transition of twinned crystals and periodic twin arrays. The predicted behavior depends on the electronic character of the twin boundary — transparent interface, weak link (a Josephson-limited, electronically weakened junction), or insulating barrier — and on the microscopic origin of the pairing modification; candidates discussed in the source framework are soft phonon modes localized at the plane, localized electronic states, and reduced Coulomb repulsion. The theory was isotropic and valid only for , simplifications the authors themselves flagged.
Later work settled much of the vortex-pinning phenomenology of twin boundaries in YBCO (twin boundaries act as pinning sites and preferential flux-entry paths). Scanning-probe experiments in iron-based superconductors — a different material family — found twin-boundary-localized superconductivity of both signs: stripes of enhanced superfluid density at twin boundaries of underdoped Ba-122 compounds that repel vortices, but suppression of the superconducting gap at twin boundaries of FeSe films, attributed there to a local structural relaxation (an increased selenium height near the boundary). A 2025 microscopic model study further showed that twinning-plane shifts of the local transition temperature of either sign can follow from purely geometric effects of the boundary on the electronic spectrum and scattering, with no change in the pairing interaction. None of this touches the cuprate-specific questions of electronic character and microscopic origin, and the TPS-specific signatures have never been quantitatively tested in cuprates.
Problem Statement
Determine the microscopic electronic character of twin boundaries in cuprate high- superconductors and thereby settle the twinning-plane-superconductivity (TPS) scenario proposed for them. The question, as left open by the source theory, has three linked components sharing one objective — establishing whether, how, and why twin boundaries modify superconductivity locally in the family (where is a rare-earth element), prototypically :
(1) Character and transparency: does a twin boundary act as an electronically transparent interface, a Josephson weak link, or an insulating (dielectric) barrier, and does it locally enhance or suppress the superconducting order parameter?
(2) Microscopic origin: which mechanism — soft phonon modes localized at the twin plane, localized electronic states, or reduced Coulomb repulsion (the candidates named in the source framework), or purely geometric effects of the boundary on the local electronic structure and scattering (shown by later model calculations to suffice even with an unchanged pairing interaction) — sets the effective pairing modification that the GL theory parametrizes by , the single unknown parameter of that framework (the induced transition shift scales as ; equivalently, the predicted and localization length ), and what is its magnitude?
(3) Experimental confrontation: can the TPS-specific signatures — a localized superconducting state between and , the characteristic square-root temperature dependence of the parallel-field upper critical field , and characteristic specific-heat anomalies near the transition of twinned crystals and periodic twin arrays — be confirmed or excluded by controlled measurements on twinned versus detwinned or twin-free crystals?
The three components are linked through the electronic character of the twin boundary, component (1). Controlled measurements on twinned versus detwinned or twin-free crystals bear on component (1) together with the TPS-specific signatures of component (3), including a decisive exclusion of those signatures at a stated sensitivity. A microscopic theory deriving — its magnitude, sign, or absence — from the electronic structure of the twin-boundary core bears on component (1) together with the microscopic origin of component (2).
