For a generic (non-extremal) Kerr black hole, Haco, Hawking, Perry and Strominger (JHEP 2018) exhibited a left-right pair of Virasoro-generating diffeomorphisms acting non-trivially on the horizon, and showed that adding the simple Wald-Zoupas counterterm (with the Hájíček one-form, a measure of the rotational velocity of the horizon) cancels a temperature-dependent obstruction in the Iyer-Wald central term, yielding state-independent central charges ; the Cardy formula then reproduces the Bekenstein-Hawking area law, but only under unproven assumptions. The open problem, stated by the authors themselves, is to turn this numerological agreement into a rigorous microscopic derivation: derive the counterterm from first principles and establish its uniqueness (or classify admissible counterterms), prove that the resulting charges are integrable and generate the Virasoro symmetries under Dirac brackets on a correctly specified phase space, construct the quantum Hilbert space on which they act as symmetry generators and justify the applicability of the Cardy formula, and characterize which horizon large diffeomorphisms (diffeomorphisms not connected to the identity) carry non-trivial charges. Subsequent work shows extensive extension and partial progress - to Kerr-Newman (the charged, rotating generalization of Kerr), to Kerr-Taub-NUT and the Plebański-Demiański family (the most general known family of rotating, charged, accelerating type-D solutions), to warped Virasoro-Kac-Moody (warped CFT) alternatives, and to integrability conditions for axisymmetric Killing horizons - but no work establishes any of the core missing ingredients; the problem remains open.
Background
The Kerr spacetime is the unique stationary, asymptotically flat, vacuum black hole solution of general relativity, parametrized by mass and angular momentum ; its event horizon has area , and the Bekenstein-Hawking law assigns it an entropy whose microscopic, state-counting origin is a central open problem of quantum gravity. A microscopic count was first achieved only for special supersymmetric, extremal or near-extremal string-theoretic black holes, beginning with the D-brane bound-state count of Strominger and Vafa, and two-dimensional conformal symmetry underlies most subsequent counts; the generic, non-extremal rotating black holes observed astrophysically have no comparable derivation.
A Virasoro algebra is the infinite-dimensional algebra of conformal transformations on a circle, generated by modes with , where the constant is the central charge; if black hole degeneracy is carried by a two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT), the Cardy formula expresses the high-temperature entropy in terms of and the spectrum, so a computed central charge plus assumed vacuum data reproduces . Three strands set the stage. First, 'soft hair': angle-dependent large diffeomorphisms (diffeomorphisms not connected to the identity, which can act non-trivially on physical charges) called supertranslations act non-trivially on the horizon, changing its classical charges and quantum state, but supertranslations form an abelian group and cannot support an entropy count, motivating the search for non-abelian large diffeomorphisms. Second, 'hidden conformal symmetry': the scalar wave equation in the near region of a generic Kerr background exhibits a local conformal symmetry ( being the finite-dimensional conformal algebra of the circle, spanned by the Virasoro modes ) at low frequencies (Castro, Maloney and Strominger), and the extremal (maximally spinning) Kerr/CFT correspondence (Guica, Hartman, Song and Strominger) realized one Virasoro copy on the near-horizon extreme Kerr geometry with ; the observation that a putative dual CFT with reproduces the Kerr entropy via Cardy was, however, numerological, with no intrinsic realization for generic Kerr. Third, the covariant phase space formalism (the framework that treats classical solutions as points of a phase space whose symplectic structure is built from the field equations): for a diffeomorphism and linearized metric perturbation , the Iyer-Wald charge is a surface integral over the boundary of a Cauchy surface; on null boundaries such as the horizon, the Wald-Zoupas prescription permits an additional counterterm built from a one-form constructed locally from the geometry and linear in , whose form is otherwise ambiguous.
Haco, Hawking, Perry and Strominger synthesized these strands: they constructed explicit vector fields on a generic Kerr horizon (inspired by hidden conformal symmetry, with poles at the bifurcation surface, the spacelike two-surface where the future and past horizons meet), computed the linearized charges at fixed on the bifurcation surface, found the Iyer-Wald central term depends on the left/right temperatures (the temperatures conjugate to the left- and right-moving energies of the putative dual CFT), which is an obstruction since a central term must be constant on phase space, and showed that the counterterm candidate , where is the Hájíček one-form ( with the horizon null normals; it measures the rotational velocity of the horizon), contributes , cancelling the obstruction and giving . Assuming a quantum Hilbert space on which these charges generate the symmetries, and the applicability of the Cardy formula, the area law follows.
The authors state explicitly what is missing: uniqueness of the counterterm is not proven; the charges are not shown to be integrable (path-independent on phase space) or to generate the diffeomorphisms via Dirac brackets (the Poisson bracket adapted to a phase space with constraints); no Hilbert space is constructed; the difficult problem of characterizing all horizon diffeomorphisms with non-trivial charges is not tackled; the phase space is restricted to fixed with pure-gauge modes allowed poles; and the fact that the counterterm contributes only to suggests but does not establish a relation to holographic gravitational anomalies (the two-dimensional gravitational anomaly, which shifts , as it appears in holographic dualities). Related prior and parallel proposals - the warped-CFT (one Virasoro copy plus a current algebra) entropy formula of González, Grumiller, Merbis and Wutte, horizon BMS-type symmetries (after the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs asymptotic symmetry group of asymptotically flat spacetime), and the extremal Kerr/CFT program - sharpen the question of why several inequivalent horizon symmetry algebras all reproduce the same entropy.
Problem Statement
Complete the soft-hair derivation of the entropy of a generic (non-extremal, astrophysical) Kerr black hole, converting the agreement between the horizon Virasoro central charges ( the angular momentum) and the Bekenstein-Hawking area law ( the horizon area, Newton's constant) into a rigorous microscopic state count. On the phase space of the generic Kerr horizon, the following must be established so that no ingredient assumed in the Haco-Hawking-Perry-Strominger (2018) construction remains an assumption. (1) Counterterm from first principles: derive the Wald-Zoupas boundary counterterm, of which ( the Hájíček one-form on the bifurcation surface) is the exhibited candidate, from a fundamental requirement (for example a well-defined variational principle, Dirichlet-type flux conditions, or the demand that the charges generate the symmetry), and prove its uniqueness, or else classify all counterterms yielding integrable, associative, state-independent charges and determine which is physically selected. (2) Integrability and algebra realization: specify the correct phase space (resolving the inconsistency between the fixed- slicing used in the central-charge computation and the fixed-horizon-radius condition needed for well-defined background charges, together with the allowed falloffs, gauge fixing, zero modes, the pole structure of the diffeomorphisms at the bifurcation surface, and whether the fixed- restriction must be lifted or other charges included), and prove that on it the charges are integrable and generate the corresponding diffeomorphisms under Dirac brackets, realizing the Virasoro algebra with central charges (or else correcting these values). (3) Quantum realization: construct or rigorously characterize the quantum Hilbert space of horizon degrees of freedom on which these charges act as symmetry generators, determine the vacuum and zero-mode spectrum from the geometry rather than by analogy, and justify the applicability of the Cardy formula, including its regime of validity near extremality. (4) Characterization of the horizon symmetry sector: determine which large diffeomorphisms (diffeomorphisms not connected to the identity) of the Kerr horizon carry non-trivial charges, so that the Virasoro sector used in the counting is identified as the physically relevant one among the competing conformal, warped, and BMS-type boundary-condition choices that all reproduce the entropy. The completion boundary is a microscopic derivation of for generic Kerr in which the counterterm, the integrability and Dirac-bracket generation of the charge algebra, the Hilbert-space realization with its spectrum, and the Cardy applicability are all derived results; partial answers resolving only some of items (1)-(4) do not meet the objective.
