The hybrid formalism of Berkovits, Vafa and Witten (JHEP 03 (1999) 018) describes the type-II superstring on AdS3×S3×T4AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4 (or AdS3×S3×K3AdS_3\times S^3\times K3) with Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux as a worldsheet conformal field theory: a sigma model on the supergroup SU′(2∣2)≅PSU(1,1∣2)SU'(2|2)\cong PSU(1,1|2) with Wess-Zumino level kk (the NS-flux quantum number) and radius 1/f2≥∣k∣1/f^2\ge|k|, coupled to the internal CFT and to ghosts, with physical states given by the cohomology of N=2N=2/N=4N=4 topological-string constraints. Only the pure NS-NS point 1/f2=∣k∣1/f^2=|k|, where the theory is a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model with affine current algebra, was manifestly solvable; the source paper states that completely solving this two-parameter family is the outstanding goal, and its constraint algebra and ghost-coupling anomaly were controlled only classically, with heuristic normal ordering. Later work has exactly solved the WZW point (notably k=1k=1, matched to the symmetric product orbifold), used the mixed-flux hybrid formalism qualitatively (long strings, chiral primaries), and, through the integrability programme, produced the worldsheet S-matrix and conjectural thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and quantum spectral curve (TBA/QSC) equations for pure and mixed flux. The exact finite-kk worldsheet solution at RR flux -- quantum-consistent constraint algebra, full BRST-cohomology spectrum, and vertex operators/correlators for background disturbances -- remains open.

Background

String theory on backgrounds of the form anti-de Sitter space times a compact space, AdS3×S3×T4AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4 or AdS3×S3×K3AdS_3\times S^3\times K3, supports some of the sharpest tests of the AdS/CFT correspondence (the conjectured equivalence between string theory on such a background and a conformal field theory on its boundary). When the background is supported by Ramond-Ramond (RR) flux -- flux of the antisymmetric-tensor field strengths whose charges in type II string theory are carried by D-branes (solitonic extended objects in string theory on which open strings can end; the label Dp denotes p spatial dimensions) rather than by elementary strings -- it is the near-horizon geometry of the D1-D5 brane system (a bound state of D1-branes and D5-branes wrapping the compact directions), whose dual is a two-dimensional CFT directly related to the symmetric product orbifold SymN(T4)\mathrm{Sym}^N(T^4) (the orbifold CFT of NN copies of T4T^4 by permutation). Solving the string worldsheet theory (the two-dimensional quantum field theory living on the surface a string sweeps out as it propagates) exactly in such a background is therefore a central problem.

Worldsheet CFT techniques (exact spectra, vertex operators -- the operators creating string states -- and correlation functions) are powerful in the Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) formalism, but no tractable RNS description exists for RR backgrounds, since spacetime supersymmetry there requires spin fields (non-local worldsheet operators that create spacetime fermions from the bosonic fields). The Green-Schwarz formalism makes spacetime supersymmetry manifest but cannot be covariantly quantized. The hybrid formalism of Berkovits, Vafa and Witten (BVW) re-expresses the RNS string in Green-Schwarz-like variables with manifest six-dimensional N=1N=1 spacetime supersymmetry, organizing the theory as an N=4N=4 topological string -- a twisted two-dimensional theory whose physical states are the cohomology of a BRST-like charge (a nilpotent operator, squaring to zero, whose cohomology implements the gauge constraints), with the current G+G^+ playing the role of the BRST current. Applied to AdS3×S3AdS_3\times S^3, this produces a sigma model (a field theory of maps from the worldsheet into a target space) whose target is the supergroup manifold SU′(2∣2)≅PSU(1,1∣2)SU'(2|2)\cong PSU(1,1|2) (a supergroup is a symmetry group whose Lie algebra also contains Grassmann-odd generators; PSU(1,1∣2)PSU(1,1|2) is the natural superconformal group of AdS3AdS_3), coupled to the T4T^4/K3K3 CFT and to ghosts (auxiliary fields that implement the gauge fixing of the string's redundant symmetries). The theory has two parameters: the Wess-Zumino level kk, equal to the integer number Q5NSQ_5^{NS} of NS-flux units (NS-NS flux, carried by elementary strings and fivebranes, enters as a topologically quantized Wess-Zumino coupling), and the radius 1/f21/f^2, with 1/f2=(Q5NS)2+λ2(Q5RR)21/f^2=\sqrt{(Q_5^{NS})^2+\lambda^2(Q_5^{RR})^2} where λ\lambda is the string coupling. Reality of the fluxes requires 1/f2≥∣k∣1/f^2\ge|k|: the boundary 1/f2=∣k∣1/f^2=|k| is pure NS-NS flux, where the sigma model becomes a Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model -- a sigma model on a group manifold whose affine (current) algebra makes it exactly solvable -- while RR flux moves the theory away from this point along a marginal deformation (a deformation of the action that preserves conformal invariance); the pure-RR locus (k=0k=0) is the one relevant to the standard D1-D5 system.

BVW argued that the SU′(2∣2)SU'(2|2) sigma model is conformally invariant to all orders (its adjoint supertrace, which controls the one-loop beta function governing how the coupling changes with distance scale, vanishes, and a U(n∣n)U(n|n) embedding argument extends this), computed the ghost couplings in closed form for pure and mixed flux, and defined physical states through an N=2N=2 superconformal constraint algebra (the algebra of conserved currents of the twisted theory: the stress tensor together with two supercurrents and a U(1)U(1) current; its N=4N=4 extension adds two further supercurrents and enhances the bosonic currents). However, the constraint algebra was controlled only at the level of classical current algebra plus heuristic normal ordering (the prescription, needed because products of quantum operators at the same point are singular, that defines composite operators by subtracting the singular parts). The authors state they have not checked that the constraints satisfy the standard N=2N=2 operator product expansions (OPEs, the algebraic data specifying how two quantum fields compose when their insertion points collide), noting that the hard case is the non-singular self-OPE of G+G^+; whether the ghost anomaly is absorbed without additional counterterms under a natural regularization was left unknown; vertex operators for disturbances (perturbations) of the AdS3×S3AdS_3\times S^3 background were not constructed; and, most centrally, they state that 'it would be nice to be able to completely solve the two parameter conformal theory', while only the WZW limit 1/f2=∣k∣1/f^2=|k| is manifestly tractable via its affine current algebra.

Problem Statement

The problem is the complete solution of the BVW hybrid worldsheet conformal field theory for the type-II superstring on AdS3×S3×T4AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4 (or AdS3×S3×K3AdS_3\times S^3\times K3) at Ramond-Ramond flux -- that is, away from the pure NS-NS Wess-Zumino-Witten point 1/f2=∣k∣1/f^2=|k| -- together with the quantum-mechanical definition of the theory at those points. Concretely, at fixed integer level kk and generic radius 1/f2>∣k∣1/f^2>|k| (mixed NS-NS/RR flux, including the RR-dominated limit and the pure-RR locus k=0k=0 of the D1-D5 system):

  1. Quantum consistency: establish the N=2N=2/N=4N=4 topological-string constraint algebra at the operator level -- the standard N=2N=2 operator product expansions including all normal-ordering constants, in particular a non-singular self-OPE of the BRST current G+G^+ -- and prove that the ghost-coupling anomalies are absorbed (or identify the required counterterms) under an explicitly specified regularization.

  2. Spectrum: determine the exact physical spectrum, i.e. the BRST cohomology of the constraints, as a function of (k,1/f2)(k,1/f^2), including the massive string excitations and not only the BPS (supersymmetry-protected) and massless sector.

  3. Vertex operators and correlators: construct the physical vertex operators for disturbances (perturbations) of the AdS3×S3AdS_3\times S^3 background and compute exact worldsheet correlators or spacetime amplitudes, mapping worldsheet states to spacetime AdS3AdS_3 supermultiplets beyond the linearized massless sector.

These three components are jointly the 'complete solution' of the two-parameter conformal theory that the source paper poses as its goal: the constraint algebra defines the quantum theory, its cohomology is its spectrum, and the vertex operators and correlators are its observables. The target is an exact result at finite kk derived from (or proven equivalent to) the worldsheet theory, not a perturbative expansion in 1/f21/f^2, a large-charge or plane-wave limit, or a conjectural integral equation validated only in a limiting regime; such partial results are intermediate steps toward the target. Whether an exactly solvable theory exists at all 1/f21/f^2 and fixed kk is itself open; an obstruction to a consistent quantum completion at some fixed (k,1/f2)(k,1/f^2) would have to be explicit and not removable by the allowed counterterms or a change of regularization. The equivalence of the cited integrability results (worldsheet S-matrix, mirror TBA, quantum spectral curve) to the hybrid worldsheet CFT is not established.
