Whether the interior of a charged black hole in an expanding universe evolves deterministically is tested by Penrose's Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC) conjecture. Linear analyses identify a near-extremal window of Reissner–Nordström–de Sitter (RNdS) black holes — charge extremely close to the extremal value (within about one percent for neutral scalar perturbations, and far closer for charged ones), where exterior perturbations decay too fast for the Cauchy-horizon blueshift to enforce SCC. The originating paper (Luna–Zilhão–Cardoso–Costa–Natário, 2019) evolved the nonlinear spherically symmetric Einstein–Maxwell–scalar system with positive cosmological constant and reported evidence that mass inflation does not occur there; however, its own authors retracted that claim in a 2020 addendum, showing that near extremality the instability onset exceeds any existing code's reliable evolution time while accretion drifts the black hole below the critical charge. The problem is open with a precise core: decide whether the near-extremal RNdS Cauchy horizon develops mass inflation or admits weak extensions (continuous metric, locally square-integrable Christoffel symbols). If extensions are possible, the source paper notes that the field equations would determine the metric beyond the Cauchy horizon only in a highly non-unique way — the precise failure mode of determinism — but the conditions on event-horizon decay under which such continuations exist, and the degree of their non-uniqueness, have not been rigorously characterized. Rigorous spherical results (Costa–Girão–Natário–Silva; Rossetti) already prove extendibility for neutral and charged scalar models under assumed exponential decay, but nothing is known beyond spherical symmetry and the spherical numerical question itself is undecided.
Background
General relativity is an initial-value problem: the Einstein field equations, given data on a spacelike hypersurface (a Cauchy surface), determine a unique maximal development. Strong Cosmic Censorship (SCC), conjectured by Penrose, asserts that this deterministic evolution is all there is: generically, the spacetime cannot be extended beyond the boundary of the maximal development (the Cauchy horizon) as a sufficiently regular solution of the equations. The conjecture is under strain precisely inside charged black holes. The analytic extension of the Reissner–Nordström metric (a charged, non-rotating black hole) contains a Cauchy horizon: a null surface inside the black hole beyond which the evolution is no longer determined by the initial data. The mass inflation scenario of Poisson and Israel — made rigorous in spherical symmetry for the Einstein–Maxwell–scalar field system with vanishing cosmological constant by Dafermos (2005) — says that perturbations blueshift (are infinitely amplified) at the Cauchy horizon, driving the Misner–Sharp mass (a geometric mass function whose blow-up defines mass inflation) to infinity. The result is a weak null singularity: the metric extends continuously, but not as a differentiable solution, so SCC survives in a (differentiable-metric) or Christodoulou formulation while failing in a formulation. The Christodoulou–Chruściel (or ) version demands slightly more: inextendibility as a solution with square-integrable Christoffel symbols.
With a positive cosmological constant — as in our universe — the exterior of a charged Reissner–Nordström–de Sitter (RNdS) black hole is bounded also by a cosmological horizon whose redshift damps perturbations. Perturbations on the event horizon decay at rates governed by quasinormal modes — the characteristic resonant oscillation frequencies of the black hole — and quantified by their spectral gap (the decay rate of the slowest mode). This decay competes with the blueshift amplification at the Cauchy horizon, whose strength is measured by the Cauchy-horizon surface gravity (the horizon's exponential stretching rate, which vanishes at extremality). The outcome is parameter-dependent. Linear analyses showed that above a charge threshold extremely close to the extremal (maximal) charge , the spectral gap exceeds the blueshift rate, so scalar and even coupled gravitational–electromagnetic perturbations from smooth initial data remain finite at the Cauchy horizon (Cardoso–Costa–Destounis–Hintz–Jansen 2018; Dias–Reall–Santos 2018): a linear violation of SCC. For uncharged Kerr–de Sitter black holes, by contrast, SCC is respected for all non-extremal parameters (Dias–Eperon–Reall–Santos 2018).
The paper at the origin of this record (Luna–Zilhão–Cardoso–Costa–Natário 2019) evolved the full nonlinear spherically symmetric Einstein–Maxwell–scalar system with in double-null coordinates and reported the first no-mass-inflation solutions arising from generic exterior data, concluding that nonlinear effects might not save SCC — while noting that its analysis was restricted to spherical symmetry and to a minimally coupled scalar field, that in a no-mass-inflation scenario the Cauchy horizon should maintain enough regularity for the field equations to determine the evolution of the metric to its future in a highly non-unique way, and that the verdict depends on how SCC is formulated (restricting admissible initial-data regularity, or restricting the conjecture to uncharged black holes). Crucially, the same authors' 2020 addendum retracted the headline no-mass-inflation claim: nonlinear accretion by the scalar pulse drove the final black hole below the corrected threshold, and the mass-inflation onset time diverges near extremality, beyond what existing numerical codes can resolve. The question of whether mass inflation occurs at all in the near-extremal regime is therefore open even in spherical symmetry, and the decisive question — the nonlinear evolution with angular dependence — remains untouched.
Problem Statement
Settle, without symmetry assumptions, the nonlinear fate of the Cauchy horizon of near-extremal Reissner–Nordström–de Sitter black holes: mass inflation or weak extendibility.
Nonlinear evolution beyond spherical symmetry. For the Einstein–Maxwell–scalar field system with positive cosmological constant (the scalar field minimally coupled, neutral or charged, massless or massive), evolving generic characteristic initial data posed in the black-hole exterior of a subextremal RNdS solution with charge above the linear threshold (computed from the final, post-accretion, black-hole parameters, since extremality drifts during evolution): determine whether the Cauchy horizon emanating from timelike infinity develops mass inflation — blow-up of the Misner–Sharp mass — or whether the solution admits an extension across a weak null singularity as a weak solution of the field equations (metric continuous, Christoffel symbols in ).
Continuation context. If the extendibility branch holds, the source paper notes that the Cauchy horizon should retain enough regularity to allow the field equations to determine the evolution of the metric across it in a highly non-unique way — the non-uniqueness of such continuations being exactly the failure of determinism at stake. The rigorous conditions on event-horizon decay (equivalently, on the quasinormal-mode spectral gap relative to the Cauchy-horizon blueshift rate and the horizon surface gravities) under which the spacetime can be continued across a weak Cauchy horizon, and a characterization of the degree of non-uniqueness of such extensions (which weak-solution classes admit genuinely distinct continuations, and in what sense they differ), remain open mathematical context, separate from the core fate-of-the-Cauchy-horizon question stated above. The source paper's remaining questions — more realistic matter models, astrophysically plausible black-hole charges, and how SCC should be reformulated or interpreted observationally — remain open as well.
