Bonelli, Del Monte, Gavrylenko and Tanzini (arXiv:1909.07990) established, for circular quiver gauge theories and their free-fermion description on the torus, an identity between the isomonodromic tau function of the elliptic Calogero–Moser (elliptic Schlesinger) system and the dual partition function of the gauge theory with a codimension-4 surface defect, up to an unexpected extra factor ZtwistZ_{twist} built from theta functions evaluated on the deautonomized dynamical variables of the isomonodromic system. The authors state that the classical limit of the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov–Bernard (KZB) equations should reproduce this tau function together with the extra factor, and that this limit is an open problem. The problem asks for an explicit derivation of this semiclassical (level k→∞k\to\infty) limit of the KZB equations on the punctured torus with degenerate-field insertions, reproducing T=ZD/Ztwist\mathcal T = Z^D/Z_{twist} including the genus-one correction ZtwistZ_{twist}, together with clarification of the underlying algebraic structure: the fermionic construction realizes a twisted gl(N)^1\widehat{gl(N)}_1 algebra at level one, while the codimension-2 defect realization uses an untwisted affine Kac–Moody algebra with a twist operator, and the relation between the two defect realizations at genus one, including whether the corresponding genus-one defect blocks agree.

Background

An isomonodromic deformation is a family of linear differential equations (here, on the punctured torus) whose monodromy — the way solutions transform under analytic continuation around punctures and cycles — stays fixed as the singularities move; its tau function is a distinguished function of the monodromy data and singularity positions whose logarithmic derivatives generate the deformation. The elliptic Calogero–Moser system, an integrable many-body system with pairwise Weierstrass-elliptic interactions, arises as the isomonodromic deformation governing the N=2∗\mathcal N=2^* supersymmetric gauge theory (the mass-deformed maximally supersymmetric theory) on the torus: the positions of the punctures map to the exactly marginal gauge couplings of the gauge theory (the deformation times of the non-autonomous system), and the elliptic parameter is the gauge-theory compactification modulus τ\tau. The AGT correspondence (Alday–Gaiotto–Tachikawa, 2009) identifies four-dimensional N=2\mathcal N=2 gauge-theory partition functions with two-dimensional conformal field theory correlators; at genus one the relevant chiral algebra is generated by NN species of free fermions whose currents realize a WNW_N algebra (the higher-spin extension of the Virasoro algebra of two-dimensional conformal field theory), and the conformal blocks satisfy the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov–Bernard (KZB) equations — the genus-one generalization of the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov equations, which govern correlators of representations of affine Kac–Moody algebras (the central extensions of loop algebras that describe current symmetries in two-dimensional conformal field theory); the equations involve the puncture positions and the torus modulus τ\tau. A surface operator (surface defect) in a gauge theory is a disorder operator supported on a two-dimensional surface inside spacetime; two constructions exist in this class of theories. Codimension-2 defects wrap the whole Riemann surface, and their partition function is a conformal block of an untwisted affine Kac–Moody algebra sl^(N)k\widehat{sl}(N)_k with an insertion of a twist operator K\mathcal K; codimension-4 defects are localized at a point of the surface and are represented by degenerate primary field insertions — special chiral fields whose operator-product expansions close on finitely many channels. These correlators are governed by KZB equations at the affine level kk, and the classical (semiclassical) limit is taken on this level, k→∞k\to\infty; the specialization k=−N−ϵ2/ϵ1k=-N-\epsilon_2/\epsilon_1 is the level fixed by requiring that the quantum Drinfeld–Sokolov reduction (the standard construction of a WNW_N algebra as a constrained Wess–Zumino–Novikov–Witten model) recovers the Virasoro algebra of Liouville theory, where ϵ1,2\epsilon_{1,2} are the two deformation parameters of the Omega-background, the equivariant regularization of the four-dimensional gauge-theory path integral. Bonelli–Del Monte–Gavrylenko–Tanzini (arXiv:1909.07990, Lett. Math. Phys. 111 (2021) 83) showed that the isomonodromic tau function T\mathcal T of the elliptic Calogero–Moser system equals the dual partition function ZDZ^D (the gauge-theory partition function with a codimension-4 surface defect in the free-fermion frame) divided by an extra factor Ztwist(Q~)=∏iθ1(Q~i)/η(τ)NZ_{twist}(\tilde Q) = \prod_i \theta_1(\tilde Q_i)/\eta(\tau)^N, where θ1\theta_1 is the odd Jacobi theta function, η(τ)\eta(\tau) the Dedekind eta function, and Q~i\tilde Q_i are the deautonomized dynamical variables of the isomonodromic system — the Calogero-like coordinates of the elliptic Schlesinger system — which solve the non-autonomous equations as functions of the puncture positions and the modulus τ\tau. Such an extra factor does not occur at genus zero (the sphere/rational case, corresponding to ordinary Painlevé equations), so it is a genuinely genus-one correction whose structural origin is unexplained. The classical (large-level, k→∞k\to\infty) limit of the KZB equations was shown by Levin–Olshanetsky (hep-th/9709207) to reproduce the isomonodromic deformation equations themselves, but only at the level of the differential equations; the corresponding statement for the tau function — whether the semiclassical limit of the KZB conformal blocks with a degenerate field reproduces T=ZD/Ztwist\mathcal T = Z^D/Z_{twist} with its extra theta-function factor — was not established and was posed as an open problem by the authors.

Problem Statement

Derive the classical (semiclassical, large-level k→∞k\to\infty) limit of the Knizhnik–Zamolodchikov–Bernard equations on the punctured torus in the presence of the degenerate-field (codimension-4 surface defect) insertion of the free-fermion/WNW_N construction of Bonelli–Del Monte–Gavrylenko–Tanzini, and show that this limit reproduces the isomonodromic tau function identity T=ZD/Ztwist\mathcal T = Z^D/Z_{twist} of the elliptic Calogero–Moser (elliptic Schlesinger) system — in particular, exhibit how the extra genus-one factor Ztwist(Q~)=∏iθ1(Q~i)/η(τ)NZ_{twist}(\tilde Q) = \prod_i \theta_1(\tilde Q_i)/\eta(\tau)^N, with Q~i\tilde Q_i the deautonomized dynamical variables of the isomonodromic system, emerges from the semiclassical limit. In the same analysis, clarify the underlying algebraic structure: the fermionic construction realizes a twisted gl(N)^1\widehat{gl(N)}_1 algebra at level one, whereas the codimension-2 defect is associated with a twist operator in an untwisted affine Kac–Moody algebra, and the precise relation between the codimension-4 and codimension-2 defect realizations at genus one — equivalently, between the twisted level-one algebra and the untwisted algebra with twist operator K\mathcal K — including whether the corresponding genus-one defect blocks agree. As posed in arXiv:1909.07990, the question concerns the circular quiver gauge theories of that construction, and also the simpler N=2∗\mathcal N=2^* one-punctured-torus case (the genus-one Painlevé VI / SU(2)SU(2) setting), which is a special instance of that construction.
