The hexagon-with-handles proposal (Bargheer, Caetano, Fleury, Komatsu, Vieira, 2017) extends planar hexagonalization to all orders in the 1/Nc1/N_c genus expansion of N=4\mathcal{N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory: polygonize the genus-gg string worldsheet in all possible ways, cut every polygon into hexagons, sprinkle mirror particles over the junctions, and stratify. Verified so far only for four-point correlators of large half-BPS operators at weak coupling (one and two loops at genus one, plus the detailed checks of Handling handles. Part II), the proposal leaves explicit open problems: incorporation of double-trace mixing and non-BPS or finite-length external operators needed to extract nonplanar conformal data; an organizing principle for the monstrous integrands generated by many mirror particles; the strong-coupling limit with contact to supergravity, string-loop, and bootstrap results at higher genus, including the emergence of bulk locality; and re-summation of the 't Hooft expansion. Later literature resolved parts of this in the simplified large-charge half-BPS sector — the octagon formalism resums the full 't Hooft expansion there and computes the octagon at strong coupling — and produced target nonplanar data by perturbative and bootstrap methods; the general problem, a usable nonplanar integrability framework with double-trace mixing, tamed multi-mirror integrands, and a strong-coupling genus expansion, remains open.

Background

Four-dimensional N=4\mathcal{N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory is the maximally supersymmetric conformal gauge theory and the best-studied example of the AdS/CFT correspondence: at large number of colors NcN_c it is dual to type IIB string theory on AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5. Its correlation functions carry a double expansion — in the 't Hooft coupling g=λ/(4π)g=\lambda/(4\pi) with λ=gYM2Nc\lambda=g_{\mathrm{YM}}^2N_c, and in 1/Nc1/N_c — and the 1/Nc1/N_c expansion reorganizes as a genus expansion, where the power 1/Nc2g1/N_c^{2g} counts the genus gg of the dual string worldsheet. The planar limit (Nc→∞N_c\to\infty, genus zero) is integrable: exact anomalous dimensions are encoded in the quantum spectral curve (a finite-difference Riemann–Hilbert problem built from the integrable spin-chain description of single-trace operators), and correlation functions are computed by hexagonalization. In hexagonalization (Basso, Komatsu, Vieira, 2015; Fleury, Komatsu, 2017), a planar graph is cut into hexagon form factors — universal building blocks fixed by the integrable worldsheet SS-matrix — which are glued back by summing over complete sets of mirror particles: the excitations obtained by analytically continuing spin-chain magnons (elementary spin-chain excitations of the operator) to mirror kinematics, whose virtual propagation around the worldsheet cylinder resums all wrapping, i.e. finite-size, corrections.

"Handling Handles" (Bargheer, Caetano, Fleury, Komatsu, Vieira, 2017) proposed the extension beyond the planar limit: polygonize the genus-gg worldsheet in all possible ways, cut every polygon into hexagons, sprinkle mirror particles over all hexagon junctions, and finally stratify — compute all graphs drawn on the genus-gg surface, including degenerate ones, and subtract the lower-genus contributions by shifting the gauge-group rank, Nc→Nc−ℓN_c\to N_c-\ell. The proposal was verified for the first nonplanar correction (genus one, order 1/Nc21/N_c^2) to four-point correlators of large half-BPS operators — operators tr Zk\mathrm{tr}\,Z^k built from kk complex scalars, protected by supersymmetry, for which double-trace mixing is absent and wrapping effects start late — at one and two loops. The companion "Handling handles. Part II" (2018) tested every step in much more detail (torus stratification, finite-size corrections, strict finite-size correlators, higher-genus examples, gauge-group subtleties), with perfect agreement with perturbation theory.

The authors stress that these are first steps and list what the formalism still cannot do. First, half-BPS external operators avoid double-trace mixing; double-trace operators (products tr(⋯ ) tr(⋯ )\mathrm{tr}(\cdots)\,\mathrm{tr}(\cdots) of traces, which mix with single traces at order 1/Nc21/N_c^2) and non-BPS or finite-length external operators are not yet handled, so the framework cannot yet deliver the nonplanar conformal data — such as anomalous dimensions of double-trace operators — whose planar counterparts hexagonalization does produce. Second, the integrand obtained after sprinkling several mirror particles "quickly becomes monstrous"; already the two- and three-mirror-particle integrands of Part II are horrendously complicated, and no organizing principle or resummation for many-mirror integrands is known. Third, the strong-coupling limit — where the formalism should make contact with supergravity and string-loop computations on AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5 and with the bootstrap determination of loop corrections in AdS, including the emergence of bulk locality at higher genus — is untouched, and there may be higher-genus subtleties analogous to the supermoduli-integration problems of the Ramond–Neveu–Schwarz (RNS) worldsheet formalism of the superstring. Finally, the authors ask whether the whole 't Hooft expansion could be re-summed, perhaps in simplified kinematics, toward a nonperturbative string-field-theory answer.

Problem Statement

Complete the hexagon-with-handles formalism for nonplanar N=4\mathcal{N}=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory beyond the half-BPS sector in which it has been verified, at the generality the proposal claims (any genus, any coupling). The common objective is to turn the polygonize–hexagonalize–sprinkle–stratify prescription into a usable nonplanar framework, through three jointly required components:

  1. Finite-NcN_c operator mixing. Extend the formalism to external operators that are non-BPS or of finite length, including the double-trace admixtures that mix with single traces at order 1/Nc21/N_c^2, so that genuinely nonplanar conformal data — for example anomalous dimensions and structure constants of double-trace and finite-NcN_c operators — can be computed and diagonalized within the framework.

  2. Taming the multi-mirror integrand. Supply an organizing principle for the integrand generated by sprinkling arbitrarily many mirror particles over the hexagon junctions, which already becomes intractable for a few mirror particles.

  3. Strong coupling at higher genus. Take the strong-coupling limit of the genus-gg terms and make contact with supergravity and string-loop computations on AdS5×S5AdS_5\times S^5 — for instance the bootstrap determination of strong-coupling double-trace spectra and of genus-one string amplitudes — including the emergence of bulk locality at higher genus and the possible higher-genus measure and stratification subtleties (supermoduli-like effects) anticipated by the authors.

Items 1 and 2 are prerequisites for any computation involving non-protected or finite-size operators, and item 3 is the decisive physical test of the proposal at strong coupling; the endpoint of the program is the re-summation of the 't Hooft expansion beyond the large-charge half-BPS sector already resummed by the octagon formalism, toward a nonperturbative string-field-theory description of the correlators.

The completion boundary of the record as a whole is a framework in which all three components work. Because the source paper poses them as separate future-work directions, they may be pursued individually, but the scientific target retains all three components at the generality claimed.
