The unitary almost Mathieu operator (UAMO) is a quasi-periodic quantum walk arising from a two-dimensional discrete-time walk in a homogeneous magnetic field, representable as an extended CMV matrix with quasi-periodic Verblunsky coefficients. After the establishment of arithmetic (Diophantine) Anderson localization for it, the paper that introduced this localization listed the central open targets of the model: the (dry) Ten Martini problem — Cantor spectrum with all gap-labeling-allowed gaps open for all couplings and irrational frequencies — sharp arithmetic spectral transitions (phase diagrams with sharp thresholds in frequency and phase), a full universal reflective-hierarchical description of the eigenfunctions, and sharp Hölder regularity of the Lyapunov exponent, integrated density of states, and spectral measures. Later work resolved two large pieces: the dry Ten Martini problem for Diophantine frequencies in the non-critical regime (Cedzich–Li 2025) and the localization side of the sharp arithmetic frequency transition at threshold β(ω)<L (Yang 2025). The surviving open core — gap opening at criticality and for Liouville frequencies, the complementary side of the transition, the eigenfunction hierarchy, and spectral regularity — is the subject of this problem.
Background
The almost Mathieu operator (AMO), with irrational frequency , coupling , and phase , is the canonical one-dimensional quasi-periodic Schrödinger operator, modeling an electron on a lattice in a magnetic field. Its spectral theory was completed over several decades and constitutes the template this problem transplants to a unitary setting. The landmark AMO results are: the Ten Martini problem (the spectrum is a Cantor set for all irrational frequencies and all couplings; solved by Avila–Jitomirskaya 2009); the dry Ten Martini problem (every gap permitted by the gap labeling theorem is actually open, i.e. not collapsed; solved away from the self-dual coupling , with the critical Diophantine case still open — Avila–You–Zhou 2023 completed the non-critical case); sharp arithmetic spectral transitions (Avila–You–Zhou 2017 and Jitomirskaya–Liu 2018: in the positive-Lyapunov regime, localization holds precisely when the frequency exponent , which measures the quality of rational approximations to via its continued-fraction denominators through , is smaller than the Lyapunov exponent, while above that threshold the spectrum is purely singular continuous); the universal reflective-hierarchical structure of quasi-periodic eigenfunctions (Jitomirskaya–Liu); and sharp Hölder continuity of the Lyapunov exponent, the integrated density of states (IDS — the normalized eigenvalue counting function, whose plateaus label the gaps), and the spectral measures. Here the Lyapunov exponent is the exponential growth rate of the transfer-matrix cocycle along the irrational rotation , and a frequency is Diophantine if for all (so ), and Liouville if it is not (one can have ).
The unitary analogue is the unitary almost Mathieu operator (UAMO) , introduced by Cedzich–Fillman–Ong. It is a discrete-time quantum walk on : the conditional shift sends the two internal states (chiralities) to with , while the quasi-periodic coin acts at site by a unitary built from , and . The model comes from a two-dimensional quantum walk in a homogeneous magnetic field, with the magnetic flux and a quasi-momentum. Identifying , turns into an extended CMV matrix — the five-diagonal unitary matrices arising in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle — with Verblunsky coefficients and ; its spectrum lies on the unit circle and, by minimality of the rotation, is independent of .
Cedzich–Fillman–Ong established the unitary counterpart of the classical framework: a unitary Aubry–André duality exchanging and (so their spectra coincide), the exact Lyapunov exponent on the spectrum (via Avila's global theory of one-frequency analytic cocycles, applied to the associated Szegő cocycle — the transfer-matrix cocycle governing CMV eigenvalue equations), and the phase diagram in the couplings: subcritical (, purely absolutely continuous spectrum for a.e. data), critical (, purely singular continuous; that the critical spectrum is a Cantor set of zero Lebesgue measure for every irrational was proved by Cedzich–Fillman–Geib–Werner), and supercritical (, pure point for a.e. data). Fan Yang then proved arithmetic Anderson localization — pure point spectrum with exponentially decaying eigenfunctions — for every Diophantine and every non-resonant (an explicit full-measure arithmetic condition, defined precisely in the Problem Statement), together with sharp single-eigenfunction asymptotics, and observed that this machinery makes the full AMO-style program accessible for the UAMO: the (dry) Ten Martini problem, sharp arithmetic spectral transitions, the eigenfunction hierarchy, and sharp regularity of the Lyapunov exponent, IDS, and spectral measures.
Problem Statement
Complete the arithmetic spectral theory of the unitary almost Mathieu operator (the extended-CMV quantum-walk operator with Verblunsky coefficients , , ), by proving its analogues of the landmark almost-Mathieu results. The four linked deliverables, which share one objective — the unitary/CMV counterpart of the AMO package, built on unitary Aubry–André duality and the now-available arithmetic localization of the Szegő cocycle — are:
(1) Dry Ten Martini problem: for every irrational frequency and all couplings — the degenerate loci are excluded, since at the Verblunsky coefficients , are constant and at the operator decomposes into on-site blocks — the spectrum is a Cantor set in which every gap allowed by the gap labeling theorem is open. The non-critical case () with Diophantine is already resolved; the surviving open cases are the critical regime (all irrational ) and the non-critical regime with Liouville .
(2) Sharp arithmetic spectral transition: in the supercritical regime with Lyapunov exponent and frequency exponent , complete the transition whose localization side (, non-resonant ) is known. Throughout this statement, a phase is called non-resonant (for ) if , and resonant otherwise (the convention of arXiv:2512.24616, eq. (1.6)). Two distinct open questions remain:
(2a) Frequency side, : determine the spectral type in this regime (in particular whether Anderson localization is absent). By analogy with the AMO, where Avila–You–Zhou (Theorem 1.1(2)) prove purely singular continuous spectrum for every when , purely singular continuous spectrum for all phases is expected; this is an analogy only, and no UAMO source states this side as a formal conjecture. At the endpoint the displayed formula gives , so the regime is empty there.
(2b) Phase side: determine the spectral type at resonant phases in the regime , where non-resonant phases are known to be localized — singular continuous spectrum is expected there, by the Jitomirskaya–Liu sharp phase transition for the Diophantine AMO — and at the threshold , which remains open even for the AMO.
(3) Eigenfunction hierarchy: establish the full universal reflective-hierarchical structure of the quasi-periodic eigenfunctions — the multi-scale hierarchy of localization centers and anti-resonance organization — in the sense of the reflective-hierarchical structure theorem of [8] (Jitomirskaya–Liu) for the almost Mathieu operator, adapted to the extended-CMV/Szegő setting, going beyond the single-eigenfunction sharp asymptotics already proved.
(4) Spectral regularity: prove sharp Hölder continuity (and optimal regularity) of the Lyapunov exponent, the integrated density of states, and the spectral measures, as functions of the spectral parameter on the unit circle, in this unitary/CMV quasi-periodic setting.
The four deliverables (1)–(4) are independent open targets, none a prerequisite for another, and a complete solution of any one of them resolves the task. Acceptance operates at the granularity of the individually labelled open cases: a complete solution of either surviving regime in (1), or of (2a), or of (2b), or of (3), or of (4), each independently resolves the task.
