The generalized Brennan conjecture (Hurri-Syrjänen and Staples, 1998) asserts that for every , every simply connected planar domain , and every -quasiconformal homeomorphism onto the unit disk, the derivative is globally integrable in the sharp range for all . The case is Brennan's classical conjecture on integrability of derivatives of conformal maps ( for , equivalently for ), one of the most famous open problems of geometric function theory, equivalent to the value of the universal integral means spectrum. The problem arises in connection with the conditional spectral estimates of Gol'dshtein, Pchelintsev and Ukhlov (2017) for the -Laplace Neumann operator, whose admissible exponent ranges depend on this conjecture. The problem remains open: the proven range stops at for (Hedenmalm–Shimorin 2005, Sola 2006) and at for general , and recent literature (2022–2026) resolves only special classes of maps.
Background
By the Riemann mapping theorem, every simply connected planar domain is conformally equivalent to the unit disk . A central quantitative question of geometric function theory is how wildly the derivative of such a mapping can behave near the boundary. A holomorphic one-to-one map is called univalent, and although for a conformal the derivative is holomorphic and nonvanishing inside , its size degenerates at . Brennan's conjecture (1978) asserts the sharp global integrability range
which, under the change of variables , for the inverse map , is equivalent to the standard form: for all (here is area measure). Both endpoints are sharp: for the slit plane , the conformal map onto built from the square root has decaying like at infinity and blowing up like at the slit tip, so the integral diverges for and for . The Koebe distortion theorem — sharp pointwise two-sided bounds on for normalized univalent — yields the sub-range by direct domination; Brennan extended this to and conjectured the endpoint . In the integral-means formulation, where and the universal integral means spectrum is the supremum over normalized univalent of the least exponent with , the conjecture is equivalent to , i.e. to the Carleson–Makarov critical constant (where is defined as the critical value such that holds precisely for , so that means this identity extends all the way to ). The best general result, from Hedenmalm–Shimorin's Prawitz-type area inequalities lifted to the bidisk (2005) together with Sola's refinement (2006), still leaves a gap: is known only for with , that is, .
Quasiconformal maps generalize conformal maps: an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of Sobolev class with positive Jacobian is -quasiconformal when its directional derivatives satisfy almost everywhere ( exactly for conformal maps); denotes the operator norm of the differential matrix. Hurri-Syrjänen and Staples (1998) formulated the quasiconformal analogue of Brennan's conjecture: for every -quasiconformal homeomorphism ,
and proved the partial range obtained by replacing the upper endpoint with , where is the best proven conformal value. Since conformal maps are -quasiconformal for every and the union of the intervals over equals , the generalized conjecture contains the classical one. Astala's area distortion theorem yields sharp local integrability of for -quasiconformal with , up to the exponent ; because this estimate is local (it controls over compact subsets ), the conjecture is genuinely a statement about global boundary behavior.
The conjecture is also the conditional bottleneck of a spectral application. The source paper (Gol'dshtein, Pchelintsev and Ukhlov, 2017) studies the first nontrivial Neumann eigenvalue of the -Laplace operator with zero normal derivative, in quasiconformal -regular domains — simply connected domains admitting a -quasiconformal with , where is the Jacobian determinant. Their eigenvalue and weighted Poincaré–Sobolev inequalities are proved under the hypothesis that the generalized Brennan conjecture holds; unconditionally the same statements hold only with substituted, that is, in strictly narrower ranges of the exponents. Their Theorem C moreover shows that the generalized conjecture for a given is equivalent to boundedness of the composition operators , , induced by all -quasiconformal .
Problem Statement
Problem (the quasiconformal analogue of Brennan's conjecture, due to Hurri-Syrjänen and Staples; the case is Brennan's conjecture itself). Let . Is it true that for every simply connected domain and every -quasiconformal homeomorphism onto the unit disk,
Here is the operator norm of the differential. For this is Brennan's conjecture: for all , equivalently for all for every conformal . The lower part of the conjectured interval, starting from the endpoint , is already covered by known results, and the conjectured endpoints cannot be improved at , where the slit-domain example diverges at and ; the open core is the upper part of the interval, currently proven only up to with the best established conformal value — at this leaves unresolved, i.e. for .
