For a two-sided noetherian ring , let be the subcategory of finitely generated left -modules arising as -th Ext-images of the regular module. Auslander asked in 1969 whether is closed under submodules; Huang (2007) answered this negatively with explicit finite-dimensional algebra counterexamples, proved that an Auslander-Gorenstein ring of self-injective dimension has submodule-closed, and explicitly left open whether is submodule-closed in general for any degree . The problem is to decide, for each (with the first open instance), whether is submodule-closed for every two-sided noetherian ring : either prove a general closure theorem or exhibit an explicit counterexample ring.
Background
For a ring , write for the category of finitely generated left -modules and for finitely generated right -modules; is two-sided noetherian if it is both left and right noetherian. For such a ring and a positive integer , Auslander's Ext-image subcategory is , where is the -th derived functor of computed on right modules. A full subcategory is submodule-closed if every non-zero submodule of a module in again lies in . In his 1969 paper Comments on the functor Ext, Auslander proved (Proposition 3.3) that any direct summand of a module in again lies in , and asked whether it is also closed under submodules — equivalently, whether is submodule-closed. The question matters because the filtration controls the syzygy/torsionfree filtration of modules and is the Ext-theoretic mechanism behind the Auslander condition and injective-dimension symmetry for noetherian rings.
Huang (2007) systematically studied this question inside a tilting-theoretic framework. Recall that a minimal injective resolution is an injective resolution in which each term is the injective envelope of the image of the preceding map (an injective envelope is an essential embedding into an injective module, unique up to isomorphism), and that the flat dimension is the shortest length of a flat resolution of . A two-sided noetherian ring is Iwanaga-Gorenstein if both and have finite injective dimension; it satisfies the Auslander condition if for all in the minimal injective resolution of , and it is Auslander-Gorenstein if both hold. Huang's main criterion (Theorem 3.7 / Corollary 3.8, specialized to the regular bimodule) states: if is two-sided noetherian with left and right self-injective dimensions equal and at most , then implies that is submodule-closed; the published equivalence pairs this flat-dimension bound with submodule-closure together with the identification , where . Consequently an Auslander-Gorenstein ring — in particular a commutative Iwanaga-Gorenstein ring — of self-injective dimension has submodule-closed (Corollary 3.9); degrees strictly below the self-injective dimension are not covered by this corollary. In the opposite direction, Huang constructed explicit finite-dimensional algebras (a quiver algebra of shape for , and a bound quiver algebra with relation for ) that are Iwanaga-Gorenstein yet violate the flat-dimension bound, so and are not submodule-closed in general — a negative answer to Auslander's original question. He then states explicitly that the higher-degree case is unknown: we don't know whether (where ) is submodule-closed or not in general. Thus the boundary between the Auslander-Gorenstein regime and the low-degree counterexamples remains unsettled from degree onward.
Problem Statement
For a two-sided noetherian ring and an integer (with the first open instance), let
Decide, for each , whether is submodule-closed (i.e., every non-zero submodule of a module in again belongs to ) for every two-sided noetherian ring . The universal claim that is submodule-closed for every and every two-sided noetherian ring is refuted by a single explicit counterexample — a two-sided noetherian ring , some , and a module having a submodule outside — at that degree, and is established by a proof of this closure for all such degrees and rings. By Huang's published criterion (Theorem 3.7 / Corollary 3.8, specialized to the regular bimodule), for a two-sided noetherian ring whose left and right self-injective dimensions are equal and at most , the flat-dimension bound holds if and only if is submodule-closed and ; consequently a submodule-closure counterexample at such a ring and degree must satisfy , but this flat-dimension bound alone is only necessary and does not by itself exhibit the required module in with a submodule outside it, since the bound may instead fail through . The problem in its stated generality also covers rings of infinite self-injective dimension, for which no criterion is currently known.
