The Gauss-product classification of Hosono, Lian, Oguiso and Yau (Commun. Math. Phys. 241 (2003) 245-286) gives a complete bijective description of rational conformal field theories on the two-torus: for fixed negative discriminant D, rational toroidal CFTs correspond to pairs of coprime classes of binary quadratic forms of discriminant D composed by the Gauss product, and equivalently to classes of rational Narain lattices. The counting side, however, is reduced rather than evaluated: the number of theories with prescribed momentum lattices is identified with the cardinality of a double-coset space of isometries between rank-2 discriminant forms, with a correction term in the diagonal case, and no closed-form arithmetic formula or structural criterion for these numbers is given when D has non-primitive classes. The unfinished core of that program remains an open problem with two linked parts: (1) closed-form arithmetic enumeration of c = 2 rational toroidal CFTs for arbitrary discriminants containing non-primitive classes - explicit formulas for the double-coset cardinalities and the correction integers, a structural characterization of when the involution property of discriminant-form isometries fails, and a proven effective enumeration procedure; and (2) the extension of the explicit moduli-to-gluing-data correspondence to rational toroidal CFTs on higher-dimensional tori, where the characterization of rationality is known but no arithmetic parametrization of the RCFT data exists. Neither part is known to be resolved in the literature to date.

Background

A toroidal conformal field theory is the two-dimensional sigma model whose target is a flat real torus TdT^d with a constant metric and a constant two-form (B-field) background. Its exact solvability rests on the Narain lattice Γ(τ,ρ)\Gamma(\tau,\rho): the lattice of left- and right-moving momenta, an even unimodular lattice (an integral lattice, self-dual, in which all self-inner products are even integers) of signature (d,d)(d,d), where the complex structure τ\tau and the complexified Kahler modulus ρ\rho of the torus are combined; T-duality acts as its orthogonal group.

A conformal field theory is called rational (an RCFT) if its chiral algebra - the symmetry algebra of one chiral (holomorphic) half - has only finitely many inequivalent irreducible representations, so that the torus partition function is a finite sum of products of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic characters, the characters being the generating functions of the states in each irreducible representation. For a toroidal CFT the chiral algebra can be enlarged, and rationality means that the momentum lattices of the maximal chiral algebras, Πl⊂Rd,0\Pi_l\subset\mathbb{R}^{d,0} and Πr⊂R0,d\Pi_r\subset\mathbb{R}^{0,d}, become positive-definite even lattices of full rank dd; the original Narain lattice is then an even unimodular overlattice of Πl⊕Πr(−1)\Pi_l\oplus\Pi_r(-1), determined by a gluing isometry φ\varphi between the discriminant forms of the two momentum lattices. The discriminant group of a lattice Γ\Gamma is the finite abelian group AΓ=Γ∗/ΓA_\Gamma=\Gamma^*/\Gamma equipped with the induced quadratic form qΓq_\Gamma (the discriminant form); Nikulin's theory of integral bilinear forms makes such gluing data the standard language for lattice extensions.

For d=1d=1 (central charge c=1c=1; the central charge counts the number of independent chiral bosonic degrees of freedom of the theory, one per dimension of the target torus) the classification of rational toroidal CFTs is classical. For d=2d=2 (c=2c=2), Moore observed that rationality holds exactly when both moduli τ,ρ\tau,\rho lie in the same imaginary quadratic field Q(D)\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D}), D<0D<0, i.e. when the elliptic curves with these moduli have complex multiplication (CM: endomorphism ring strictly larger than Z\mathbb{Z}). Hosono, Lian, Oguiso and Yau then completed the arithmetic classification at c=2c=2. Binary quadratic forms Q(a,b,c)Q(a,b,c) of discriminant D=b2−4ac<0D=b^2-4ac<0 up to unimodular change of variables form the classical class group Cl(D)Cl(D) under Gauss composition, the composition law of binary quadratic forms going back to Gauss; the authors extend it to the finite set CL(D)CL(D) of classes of all (not necessarily primitive) forms of discriminant DD, where the product C1∗C2C_1*C_2 is defined only for coprime classes. Their main theorem (Summary 5.12 of the source) states that every rational toroidal CFT with momentum-lattice determinant −D-D arises from a coprime pair (A,B)(A,B) in CL(D)CL(D), its momentum lattices being q(A∗σB)q(A*\sigma B) and q(A∗B)q(A*B) (with σ\sigma the involution Q(a,b,c)↦Q(a,−b,c)Q(a,b,c)\mapsto Q(a,-b,c)), that the theory corresponds to the Narain class [Γ(τA,ρB)][\Gamma(\tau_A,\rho_B)], and that the parametrization is bijective modulo explicit identifications. The classification is therefore complete; the evaluation of the resulting finite counts is not.

The counting is governed by double-coset spaces: for momentum lattices Γl,Γr\Gamma_l,\Gamma_r of determinant −D-D, the number of RCFTs with these momentum lattices is ∣O(Γl)\Isom⁡(AΓl,AΓr)/O(Γr)∣|O(\Gamma_l)\backslash\operatorname{Isom}(A_{\Gamma_l},A_{\Gamma_r})/O(\Gamma_r)| when Γl\Gamma_l and Γr\Gamma_r are not isomorphic (Proposition 5.9, Corollary 5.10 of the source), where O(Γ)O(\Gamma) is the isometry group of the lattice acting on the isometries between the two discriminant forms. For primitive lattices (lattices not expressible as an integer multiple Γ′(n)\Gamma'(n), n>1n>1) every isometry of the discriminant form is an involution, φ2=id\varphi^2=\mathrm{id} (Proposition B.1 of the source, proved in its Appendix B), which makes the diagonal case Γl=Γr=Γ\Gamma_l=\Gamma_r=\Gamma uniform; for non-primitive lattices this fails, the classes [φ][\varphi] and [φ−1][\varphi^{-1}] must be identified separately, and the count acquires the correction term nΓn_\Gamma (the number of self-inverse double-coset classes) of Corollary 5.10. The source works the examples D=−39D=-39 and D=−144D=-144, proves an 'average one' formula for primitive lattices (Theorem 0.1), and exhibits one non-primitive lattice of determinant 236236 with [φ]≠[φ−1][\varphi]\neq[\varphi^{-1}]; it gives no general formula for the double-coset cardinalities or for nΓn_\Gamma, and no criterion for when the involution property fails.

Beyond the two-torus, Wendland's thesis established the characterization of rationality for tori of arbitrary dimension: writing T2mT^{2m} for the complex torus of complex dimension mm (real dimension 2m2m, central charge c=2mc=2m), a toroidal CFT on T2mT^{2m} is rational exactly when its metric and B-field are rational, equivalently when the complex torus is isogenous (linked by a surjective group homomorphism with finite kernel) to a product of CM elliptic curves. Chen proved the version for vertex operator algebras - the algebraic structures that axiomatize chiral algebras - showing that the vertex operator algebra V(T,G,B)V(T,G,B) of a complex torus with constant metric GG and B-field BB is rational if and only if GG and BB are rational, and showed that CM for abelian varieties is equivalent to admitting a rational constant Kahler metric. Gukov and Vafa conjectured a Hodge-theoretic characterization of rationality for sigma models on Calabi-Yau threefolds (rationality if and only if the target and its mirror are of CM type), which Kidambi, Okada and Watari recently refined and proved for the four-torus T4T^4. These results characterize which toroidal compactifications are rational; none of them provides the explicit arithmetic parametrization of the RCFT data - momentum lattices and gluing isometries - that the Gauss product gives at c=2c=2.

Problem Statement

The problem is to complete the arithmetic enumeration of rational toroidal conformal field theories left unfinished by the Gauss-product classification of Hosono-Lian-Oguiso-Yau (Commun. Math. Phys. 241 (2003) 245-286). It has two linked parts with one common objective: turning the characterization of rational toroidal CFTs into explicit, countable arithmetic data at and beyond central charge 2.

Part 1 (closed-form enumeration at c = 2). For every negative discriminant DD - the essential new content being the case where the class set CL(D)CL(D) contains non-primitive classes - determine in closed arithmetic form, in terms of invariants of DD (class groups; genera, the coarser grouping of classes of forms that are equivalent over the pp-adic numbers for every prime pp; and the prime decomposition of DD) and of the lattice classes involved:

(a) the cardinalities of the double-coset spaces ∣O(Γ)\Isom⁡(AΓ,AΓ′)/O(Γ′)∣|O(\Gamma)\backslash\operatorname{Isom}(A_\Gamma,A_{\Gamma'})/O(\Gamma')| for even positive-definite rank-2 lattices Γ,Γ′\Gamma,\Gamma' of determinant −D-D - equivalently, by Corollary 5.10 of Hosono-Lian-Oguiso-Yau (2003), the cardinalities of the sets of coprime pairs (C1,C2)(C_1,C_2) with prescribed Gauss products, i.e. the fibers of the map (C1,C2)↦(C1∗σC2, C1∗C2)(C_1,C_2)\mapsto(C_1*\sigma C_2,\,C_1*C_2) on coprime pairs in CL(D)CL(D);

(b) the integers nΓn_\Gamma, together with a structural characterization of exactly which non-primitive rank-2 lattices Γ\Gamma admit double-coset classes with [φ]≠[φ−1][\varphi]\neq[\varphi^{-1}] (equivalently, for which the involution property φ2=id\varphi^2=\mathrm{id} fails on O(AΓ)O(A_\Gamma));

so that the numbers of c = 2 rational toroidal CFTs of determinant −D-D with prescribed momentum lattices - and the total number for each DD - follow in closed form, with the average-one formula (Theorem 0.1) of Hosono-Lian-Oguiso-Yau and its examples D=−39,−144,−236D=-39,-144,-236 as consistency checks. Determine a proven-correct effective enumeration procedure for arbitrary DD and analyze its complexity.

Part 2 (extension beyond the two-torus). Construct, for complex dimensions m≥2m\geq 2, an explicit parametrization of the rational toroidal CFTs on T2mT^{2m} of fixed discriminant data (the determinant invariants of the momentum lattices together with the isomorphism classes of their discriminant forms; at the two-torus these are fixed by the negative discriminant DD), in terms of the arithmetic of the underlying CM elliptic factors: a dictionary, analogous to the c = 2 Gauss-product correspondence, assigning to each rational Narain lattice class its momentum lattices (rank-2m2m positive-definite even lattices) and gluing isometries of their discriminant forms, bijectively modulo explicit identifications, together with the corresponding counting formulas. The parametrization must reduce to Summary 5.12 of Hosono-Lian-Oguiso-Yau for complex dimension m=1m=1, and its image must be exactly the rational locus characterized by Wendland's theorem (metric and B-field rational; complex torus isogenous to a product of CM elliptic curves).
