A sum-free sequence, in the sense introduced by Erdős in 1962, is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers in which no term is a sum of two or more distinct other terms. Erdős proved its reciprocal sum is bounded () and asked for the best constant; writing over all sum-free sequences, the best published bounds are (Abbott 1987; Yang 2015), while as late as 1999 the record was . No determination of is known: the problem of determining the exact value of , and thereby settling Levine and O'Sullivan's conjecture that is much closer to 2 than to 4, remains open.
Background
A strictly increasing sequence of positive integers is called a sum-free sequence, in the sense introduced by Erdős in 1962, if no term of can be written as a sum of two or more distinct other terms of . Because the sequence is increasing, it is equivalent to demand that no term is a sum of distinct earlier terms, i.e. that avoids every subset sum over subsets with at least two elements. This ordered notion is stronger than — and must not be confused with — the additive-combinatorics notion of a sum-free set (a set of integers containing no solution of ): under the set notion the odd integers are sum-free and have a divergent reciprocal sum, whereas for Erdős's sequences the finiteness of the reciprocal sum is a genuine theorem, indeed the founding one.
Erdős, in "Remarks on number theory. III" (Matematikai Lapok 13, 1962, in Hungarian), proved that every sum-free sequence has asymptotic density zero and reciprocal sum
and asked for the best possible constant. The quantity of this problem is
the supremum of reciprocal sums over all sum-free sequences (the later Chinese-school literature writes or for the same quantity).
Levine and O'Sullivan (1977) improved the upper bound to , with an effective version giving about ; constructed a sum-free sequence with ; and conjectured that is "much closer to 2 than to 4". Their method rests on a relaxation that has organized the subject since. Every sum-free sequence satisfies the counting inequality for all , a combinatorial consequence of sum-freeness; an increasing sequence satisfying this inequality is called a -sequence. Sum-free sequences form a subclass of -sequences, so an upper bound valid for all -sequences also bounds . Levine and O'Sullivan conjectured that the supremum over -sequences is attained by the sequence — the Levine–O'Sullivan sequence, catalogue entry OEIS A014011 — defined by and , whose reciprocal sum is about . Since this conjectural value exceeds the best known upper bound for itself, the relaxation cannot be expected to settle ; this is the structural reason upper-bound progress on has required exploiting genuine sum-freeness beyond the counting inequality.
Abbott (1987) improved the lower bound to with an explicit construction adjoining carefully chosen blocks to the base ; this is still the best published lower bound. Deshouillers, Erdős and Melfi, "On a question about sum-free sequences" (Discrete Mathematics 200, 1999), settled adjacent questions of the same lineage: they constructed sum-free sequences with no asymptotic gaps, , and, for every , sum-free sequences with ; Łuczak and Schoen (2000) then proved the sharp density estimate (where counts terms of the sequence up to ), together with a construction showing this order is essentially best possible. The reciprocal-sum constant , the classical question of this lineage, is not touched by these density and growth results; Melfi's 2004 survey of exactly this literature records Abbott's lower bound and the Levine–O'Sullivan upper bound as the state of the art at that date.
All subsequent progress has been on the upper bound, by forcing longer initial segments of -sequences with large reciprocal sum and refining the case analysis: Chen (2013) proved , showing that a -sequence with large reciprocal sum must begin (the first sixteen terms of ); Wu (2014) proved for sum-free sequences whose first term satisfies ; Yang (2015) proved for all sum-free sequences, the best published upper bound. On the relaxation side, Yang and Jiang (2015) proved ; Hu and Zhang (2016) determined the asymptotics of the terms of , settling a conjecture of Chen; and Xue (2024) proved for an associated quantity of , settling further conjectures of Chen.
Problem Statement
Determine the exact value of
where a sum-free sequence is a strictly increasing sequence of positive integers in which no term is a sum of two or more distinct other terms (Erdős, 1962). Determining requires matching upper and lower bounds: an explicit sum-free construction, or explicit family of constructions, whose reciprocal sum equals the claimed value or tends to it, together with a proof that every sum-free sequence has reciprocal sum at most that value. Such a determination in particular bears directly on the Levine–O'Sullivan conjecture (1977) that is much closer to 2 than to 4. The best published bounds at present are ; narrowing the interval is progress toward, but not a completion of, the problem.
