Chai, Kang, Gan, Yu and Dai (2021) constructed six novel single-loop 6R metamorphic mechanisms by connecting three Bennett linkages in series (with identical outer loops), removing the shared links to form an 8R chain, and rigidifying two revolute joints; the resulting mechanisms bifurcate among classical linkage types such as the Bennett 4R, Goldberg 5R, and variant serial Goldberg 6R linkages. Within that paper, bifurcation-existence conditions for the variant serial Goldberg 6R–Bennett member — and the parameter-space boundaries for Goldberg 5R closure in the double-Bennett variant-branched member — were decided by numerically plotting kinematic maps rather than by closed-form algebraic criteria, and the construction was confined to exactly three Bennett loops with identical outer loops. The open problem is to generalize this construction (more than three loops, non-identical outer loops, building blocks from other overconstrained families such as Bricard linkages) and to characterize bifurcation existence and its parameter-space boundaries in closed algebraic form, giving a systematic, certifiable design theory for metamorphic mechanisms induced from overconstrained building blocks. No resolution of either core question is known in the literature to date.
Background
A spatial linkage is an assembly of rigid links connected by joints; when all joints are revolute (single-axis hinges, denoted R), a closed chain with six joints is called a 6R linkage. By the Kutzbach–Grübler mobility count a general spatial 6R loop should be rigid, yet special geometries make it movable — such linkages are called overconstrained. The Bennett linkage (1914) is the canonical nontrivial example: a spatial 4R linkage movable only when opposite link lengths and twist angles are equal and the length-to-sine-of-twist ratio is the same for all links (twist angle being the angle between consecutive joint axes, link length the distance between them). Goldberg (1943) showed that series-connecting Bennett linkages and deleting shared links yields movable 5R and 6R linkages — the Goldberg 5R, Goldberg primary 6R, and variant serial Goldberg 6R linkages — obtained as degenerate Bennett combinations. Bricard linkages are a further family of overconstrained 6R loops (line-symmetric, plane-symmetric, and orthogonal types), and the Schatz linkage is another classical overconstrained loop.
A metamorphic mechanism is one that changes its effective number of links and joints during operation, so that its mobility (number of independent degrees of freedom, DOF) and motion type change without disassembly; a motion branch is one of the distinct constrained motions the mechanism can follow, and bifurcation is the phenomenon whereby, at a special configuration, the mechanism can switch from one motion branch to another (for example from a Goldberg 6R motion to a Bennett 4R motion in which two joints are momentarily inactive). Detecting bifurcation is commonly done numerically: one solves the loop-closure equations (the algebraic constraints among joint angles imposed by the loop geometry, classically written in Denavit–Hartenberg parameters, the standard four-parameter description of consecutive joint axes) and monitors where the Jacobian of these constraints drops rank — e.g. via singular value decomposition (SVD), the standard matrix factorization revealing rank loss. Screw theory, which represents joint axes as screws (geometric elements combining an axis direction and a pitch), underlies analytical alternatives; the constraint-screw system of a mechanism is the set of wrenches (constraint forces/moments) its joints impose, and its geometry at special configurations signals reconfiguration.
Chai, Kang, Gan, Yu and Dai (2021) gave a systematic construction: three Bennett linkages connected in series, the two links shared by adjacent loops removed, producing a closed 8R chain of mobility three; when the leftmost and rightmost Bennett loops are chosen with identical parameters, rigidifying two of the eight joints (which fixes two 'kink angles' between the fused links) yields, over seven distinct joint pairs, six novel metamorphic 6R mechanisms that bifurcate among Bennett, Goldberg 5R, variant serial Goldberg 6R, and Goldberg primary 6R branches. For several cases the paper derived closed-form bifurcation conditions in the kink and twist angles (e.g. ), but for the variant serial Goldberg 6R–Bennett member the existence and number of bifurcation configurations were decided by plotting the kinematic map from an input joint angle to the output angles and checking whether two outputs reach simultaneously, and the bounds of the kink angle for which a companion loop satisfies Goldberg 5R closure were likewise obtained by numerical plotting. Related work had earlier shown numerically analyzed bifurcation in Goldberg-family linkages (Song and Chen 2012 on the double-subtractive-Goldberg 6R) and multi-branch metamorphic loops (Song, Ma and Dai 2019), so numerical bifurcation identification was — and remains — the field's standard practice, while adjacent metamorphic loops built from other overconstrained families were known (Chai and Dai 2019 on Waldron–Bricard metamorphic mechanisms, obtained by other construction principles, not by series connection).
Problem Statement
Two linked questions define the open problem left by Chai et al. (2021), with the common objective of a systematic, certifiable design theory for metamorphic mechanisms induced from overconstrained building blocks.
-
Generalization of the construction. Does the construction methodology — series-connect single-DOF overconstrained linkages, remove shared links, and rigidify two joints to induce single-loop metamorphic mechanisms that bifurcate among classical linkage types — extend beyond three Bennett loops with identical outer-loop parameters? In particular: (a) constructions from more than three series-connected Bennett loops; (b) constructions with non-identical outer Bennett loops; (c) constructions whose building blocks come from other overconstrained linkage families, such as Bricard linkages. For each admissible extension, the answer should identify which metamorphic mechanisms arise, their motion branches, and their bifurcation configuration conditions, completing the design-space map that the source paper only began. The cases (a)–(c) are illustrative instances of this general extension rather than a mandatory checklist: a general extension result subsumes them.

Closed-form bifurcation-existence criteria. For the mechanisms this construction induces — in particular the variant serial Goldberg 6R–Bennett metamorphic mechanism, for which the source paper decided bifurcation existence and multiplicity only by numerically plotting kinematic maps — can bifurcation existence, number, and the parameter-space boundaries (such as the kink-angle bounds and within which Goldberg 5R closure holds for the companion loop) be characterized by closed-form algebraic conditions in the link parameters (link lengths, twist angles, and rigidification kink angles), valid for any parameter set rather than verified by example plots?
