The holmium polyoxometalate Na9[Ho(W5O18)2]·nH2O (HoW10) exhibits a clock transition where the electron-spin transition frequency is first-order insensitive to magnetic-field noise, yielding phase-coherence times up to 8.4 microseconds at 5 kelvin even at high qubit concentration. Two questions from the 2016 discovery remain open: the field-detuning power-law exponent with which the coherence time T2T_2 diverges on approaching the clock transition (measured near 0.33 and 0.46 at dilutions x=0.001x=0.001 and x=0.01x=0.01, versus idealized predictions of 1 or 2) has no accepted microscopic explanation, and the decoherence contributed by direct flip-flop processes between resonant holmium centers at practical concentrations is unquantified. Neither core has been resolved by subsequent work, despite substantial progress on clock-transition platforms and spin-phonon relaxation.

Background

A molecular spin qubit is a molecule whose central magnetic ion carries a controllable quantum state; here the ion is trivalent holmium embedded in the polyoxometalate cage Na9[Ho(W5O18)2]·nH2O (HoW10). Crystals are magnetically diluted, Hox_xY1−x_{1-x}W10_{10}, substituting nonmagnetic yttrium for holmium at mole fractions xx=0.001 and 0.01. The holmium electronic spin couples to the II=7/2 nuclear spin and to a crystal field (the electrostatic environment of the ion, parameterized by Stevens coefficients such as B44B_{4}^{4}), producing a dense set of hyperfine levels. At an avoided crossing of two such levels, the transition frequency becomes first-order insensitive to the applied static field B0zB_{0z} (df/dB0z→0df/dB_{0z}\to0); this is a clock transition, by analogy with atomic clocks. There the phase-coherence time T2T_2, measured by Hahn echo (a pulsed electron-spin-echo protocol refocusing static dephasing), reaches 8.4 microseconds at 5 kelvin. Away from the clock transition, T2T_2 rises as a power law T2∝(B0z−Bmin⁡)−nT_2\propto(B_{0z}-B_{\min})^{-n} where Bmin⁡B_{\min} is the clock field; theory for two limiting bath models predicts nn=1 (indirect flip-flop spin diffusion, in which mutually coupled bath spins exchange places) or nn=2 (instantaneous diffusion, decoherence from the microwave pulse flipping neighboring resonant spins), but the reported fits give n≈0.33n\approx0.33 at xx=0.001 and n≈0.46n\approx0.46 at xx=0.01. Candidate extrinsic contributions that could flatten the divergence include mosaic spread (slight misorientation of molecules across the crystal), a distribution of the crystal-field parameter B44B_{4}^{4} (strain), and ESEEM (electron-spin-echo envelope modulation, a modulation of the echo by coupled nuclear spins). The spin-lattice relaxation time T1T_1 (recovery toward thermal equilibrium via phonon emission/absorption) is about 20 microseconds at 5 kelvin and bounds T2T_2 exactly at the clock transition. The cluster correlation expansion (CCE) is the standard many-body method for computing central-spin decoherence in a bath by summing correlations over spin clusters; its clock-transition generalizations show that the quadratic field-noise coupling operative there generates long-range effective interactions that make baths of resonant and non-resonant qubits much harder to treat than ordinary central-spin baths.

Problem Statement

For the clock transition of the molecular spin qubit Hox_xY1−x_{1-x}W10_{10} near 9.18 GHz, determine the intrinsic microscopic mechanism and quantitative scaling of decoherence with field detuning from the clock point. Specifically: (1) what power-law exponent nn in T2∝(B0z−Bmin⁡)−nT_2\propto(B_{0z}-B_{\min})^{-n} characterizes an ensemble free of extrinsic inhomogeneity, and which contributions — intrinsic or extrinsic, among mosaic spread, the Gaussian distribution of the crystal-field parameter B44B_{4}^{4}, ESEEM-related inhomogeneity, and other mechanisms — account for the observed slopes (‘≈‘`\approx`0.33 at xx=0.001 and ‘≈‘`\approx`0.46 at xx=0.01) falling below the idealized predictions nn=1 (indirect flip-flop spin diffusion) and nn=2 (instantaneous diffusion), and with what weight? (2) To what degree do direct flip-flop processes between resonant Ho centers limit T2T_2 at practical concentrations, and how much can they be suppressed by detuning the clock-transition frequencies of individual molecules — a question explicitly deferred as 'complex many-body physics' by the most detailed follow-up treatment? A complete answer supplies a bath model (nuclear, electron flip-flop, and phonon sectors) validated against the measured concentration- and field-dependent T2T_2, with the role of each inhomogeneity channel quantified. Related context, not required for a complete answer: extending T1T_1/spin-phonon-limited coherence above 5 kelvin, sample-to-sample variability of the B44B_{4}^{4} distribution and mosaic spread, and device integration with tunable clock-transition frequencies.
