Belloni, Homan, Motta, Ratti & Méndez (2007) monitored the atoll neutron-star X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 with RXTE every two days for 1.5 years, showed that its kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPOs) have no intrinsically preferred frequencies, and explicitly left unresolved which physical mechanism produces the twin kHz QPOs and their correlations, and whether the abrupt drop of the lower kHz QPO's quality factor at high frequency is a signature of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). Subsequent literature has substantially resolved, for 4U 1636-53, the preferred-frequency and preferred-ratio claims as sampling and selection artifacts and has provided a viable physical model for the ~30-40 day accretion state cycle (hydrogen thermal-ionization instability in the outer disc); the parallel-track phenomenology has candidate models but no consensus; and the dynamical origin of the twin kHz QPOs, the ISCO interpretation of the coherence drop, and whether the absence of intrinsically preferred frequencies and ratios is generic across neutron-star kHz QPO sources remain open, with new candidate models still appearing through 2026 and no accepted identification. The problem posed is a quantitatively tested physical model of the kHz QPO phenomenology of 4U 1636-53, together with a determination of the origin of the high-frequency coherence drop and a demonstration of whether the absence of preferred kHz QPO frequencies and ratios is generic across neutron-star sources.

Background

Neutron-star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are systems in which a neutron star accretes matter from a companion star through an accretion disc. In the 'atoll' subclass — named for the island-versus-banana pattern the sources trace in an X-ray colour-colour diagram (a plot of one X-ray hardness ratio against another), with the hard 'island' state at low accretion rate and the soft 'banana' state at higher rate — the source 4U 1636-53 (also written 4U 1636-536) is one of the best-monitored examples. The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) revealed that these sources show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) — peaks in the Fourier power spectrum of the X-ray light curve — at frequencies of roughly 500-1300 Hz, the fastest periodic signals observed from any astronomical object. In many observations two simultaneous peaks appear, the 'twin' kHz QPOs: a lower and an upper kHz QPO whose frequencies correlate strongly with each other, with X-ray flux, and with slower variability components. Because sub-millisecond variability must arise within a few tens of gravitational radii of the neutron star, kHz QPOs are a candidate empirical probe of strong-field general relativity, including the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) — the radius inside which no stable circular orbit exists in the Schwarzschild or Kerr metrics.

Proposed identifications of the twin peaks include: the relativistic precession model (Stella & Vietri 1999), in which the two frequencies are the orbital frequency and the apsidal-precession rate (the precession of the orbit's ellipse) of matter at one inner-disc radius; parametric resonances between the relativistic epicyclic frequencies — the frequencies at which matter slightly displaced from a circular orbit oscillates in the radial and vertical directions, which differ from each other in general relativity — which predict preferred frequency ratios such as 2:3 (Abramowicz et al. 2003); beat-frequency models combining orbital motion with the stellar spin; magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave and boundary-layer oscillation models; and oscillating-torus models, in which the twin peaks are normal modes of a slender torus of matter orbiting the star (Török et al. 2016). None is universally accepted. Two further pieces of phenomenology constrain any candidate. First, the QPO frequency correlates with X-ray flux on hour time scales but the relation shifts between epochs ('parallel tracks'); van der Klis (2001) proposed that the frequency depends on the instantaneous accretion rate normalized by its long-term average. Second, the quality factor QQ (peak frequency divided by its full width at half maximum, a measure of the oscillation's coherence and lifetime) of the lower kHz QPO in 4U 1636-53 rises to Q∼200Q\sim200 and then drops abruptly above ∼900\sim900 Hz; Barret, Olive & Miller (2005, 2006) interpreted this drop as the inner disc reaching the ISCO, a conclusion contested by Méndez (2006).

Belloni, Homan, Motta, Ratti & Méndez (2007) monitored 4U 1636-53 with RXTE at two-day cadence for 1.5 years. They found a recurrent ∼30\sim30-4040 day cycle of transitions between island and banana states (first seen by Shih et al. 2005) that traces a hysteresis loop in the hardness-intensity diagram (a plot of X-ray colour against X-ray intensity), the first such loop seen repeatedly in a persistent neutron-star system; and a flat distribution of lower-kHz-QPO frequencies, different from that of an earlier epoch, showing that previously claimed 'preferred frequencies' in this source were artifacts of the random walk of the QPO frequency combined with sparse observational sampling, as Belloni, Méndez & Homan (2005) had proposed. The paper explicitly leaves open: which physical mechanism produces the twin kHz QPOs and their correlations; whether the coherence drop at high frequency is evidence for the ISCO; what drives the state cycle and hysteresis; whether the changed long-term-average flux fully accounts for the changed frequency distribution between epochs; and whether the absence of preferred frequencies is generic across kHz QPO sources.

Problem Statement

Identify the physical mechanism that produces the twin kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations in the neutron-star X-ray binary 4U 1636-53, and settle the interpretation of the associated phenomenology. The common objective is a quantitatively tested physical model of the kHz QPO phenomenon in this source; its components are:

(i) A dynamical mechanism — orbital, precession, resonance, magnetohydrodynamic, boundary-layer, or other — together with its radiative realization, that predicts the lower and upper kHz QPO frequencies over the observed range and reproduces their correlations: the relation between the two peak frequencies, the correlations with the low-frequency variability components, and the frequency-flux relation including the parallel-track shifts between epochs; in particular, whether a dependence of frequency on the accretion rate normalized by its long-term average accounts for the differing lower-kHz-QPO frequency distributions of the 1996-1998 and 2005-2006 epochs of 4U 1636-53.

(ii) A determination, within the same framework or by direct observational test, of whether the abrupt drop of the quality factor of the lower kHz QPO at high frequencies in 4U 1636-53 is a signature of the innermost stable circular orbit or a consequence of changing accretion-flow properties (corona or boundary-layer optical depth and temperature).

(iii) A demonstration of whether the absence of intrinsically preferred frequencies and frequency ratios established for 4U 1636-53 is generic across neutron-star kHz QPO sources — a discriminant test, since resonance-class models predict preferred ratios.

Components (i)-(iii) are jointly required for the single objective of physically identifying the kHz QPO phenomenon: the stated mechanism must withstand quantitative comparison with the published timing phenomenology of 4U 1636-53 (the lower–upper kHz QPO frequency correlation, the frequency–flux and parallel-track relations, and the quality factor of the lower kHz QPO) and be consistent with the established selection-effect and multi-source constraints. The mechanism of the ~30-40 day accretion state cycle, also listed as unresolved in the same source paper, is a distinct accretion-state physics question and lies outside the scope of this problem.
