Bonson & Gallo (2016) simulated over 4000 Seyfert-1 spectra and showed that X-ray reflection (Fe Kα) fitting returns the spin of a supermassive black hole reliably only for (to about ), never constrains the inner emissivity index , and degrades when retrograde solutions are permitted, under deliberately simple unabsorbed single-epoch spectra. Absorption-complexity effects have been substantially quantified (Kammoun et al. 2018: absorber complexity is not the dominant limitation; coronal height is), and XRISM-class high-resolution Fe Kα data now exist (MCG-6-30-15, NGC 3783), but no demonstration of independent recovery exists and GRMHD-based forward models show current reflection tables recover only fast spins while challenging the broken-power-law emissivity paradigm itself. The retrograde-fit degradation mechanism and the unbiased recovery of intermediate/low spins — prerequisite for the true SMBH spin distribution — remain open.
Background
A supermassive black hole (SMBH, – solar masses) is fully described by mass and angular momentum; the dimensionless spin parameter (0 for a non-rotating hole, up to for maximal prograde/retrograde rotation) records the hole's accretion and merger history and sets the radiative efficiency of accretion. The two standard electromagnetic spin-measurement techniques are thermal continuum fitting (inapplicable to most active galactic nuclei, AGN, because the continuum is not a simple disk spectrum) and X-ray reflection spectroscopy: the corona above the accretion disk illuminates the disk, producing a reflection spectrum whose most prominent feature is the Fe Kα fluorescence line near 6.4 keV. Relativistic Doppler shifts and gravitational redshift broaden the line in a spin-dependent way, because the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) — the effective inner edge of line emission — moves inward for more rapidly spinning prograde holes. State-of-the-art fitting uses self-consistent reflection models such as relxill, in which the illumination profile of the disk is often parameterized by a broken power-law emissivity, inside a break radius and outside it; encodes how centrally concentrated the illumination is. The corona is frequently placed at a height on the spin axis above the disk (the lamp-post geometry). Real AGN spectra are further complicated by a soft excess below keV, warm absorbers (mildly ionized gas along the line of sight), partial-covering neutral absorbers, and distant reflection, and AGN vary within and between observations. Bonson & Gallo (2016) fit over 4000 simulated Seyfert-1 spectra (375,000 counts, deliberately simple unabsorbed models, single epoch) with relxill and found: parameters are biased when only the 2.5–10 keV band is used and improve with coverage to 70 keV; the spin is well measured only for (to about ); the inner emissivity index is never constrained and would require detailed fitting of the Fe Kα profile; allowing retrograde spin did not improve results and the degradation was plausibly, but not demonstrably, due to fits falling into local minima of the landscape; and, since high spins are easier to measure, published samples may be biased and the true spin distribution of SMBHs may be inaccessible to current Fe Kα fitting (a concern quantified by Vasudevan et al. 2016 as a selection effect boosting rapidly spinning holes in flux-limited samples). The paper flagged the then-forthcoming Astro-H microcalorimeter (Hitomi, lost in 2016; XRISM, launched 2023, is its successor with a comparable 5 eV-resolution Resolve spectrometer) as the instrument class needed to test whether the Fe Kα profile can constrain the emissivity geometry.
Problem Statement
Establish under what conditions X-ray reflection (Fe Kα) spectroscopy returns an unbiased measurement of SMBH spin outside the regime validated by Bonson & Gallo (2016) — beyond , unabsorbed single-epoch spectra, and a fixed broken-power-law emissivity — addressing four linked parts: (a) quantify how realistic spectral complexity (warm absorbers, partial-covering and neutral absorption, soft excess) and multi-epoch or time-resolved data change the accuracy and precision of recovered spin, inclination, ionization, and emissivity parameters; (b) determine whether the inner emissivity index — or an adequate replacement parameterization of the illumination geometry — can be independently constrained from high-resolution Fe Kα profiles such as XRISM/Resolve microcalorimeter data, given that GRMHD-based predictions question the broken-power-law emissivity framework; (c) establish whether the degradation of spin constraints when fits are permitted to explore retrograde solutions arises from local minima in the landscape (a statistical/algorithmic artifact of the enlarged parameter volume) or from a genuine physical degeneracy between prograde and retrograde solutions; and (d) determine whether, and under what conditions, these ingredients enable reliable spin measurement for intermediate and low spins () — where reliable is defined as unbiased to within in , the criterion applied to the regime by Bonson & Gallo (2016) — quantifying the selection biases that affect inference of the true spin distribution of SMBHs rather than a high-spin-biased sample, with (d) posed alongside (a)–(c) rather than in place of them.
