Tasaki, Yuasa, Facchi, Kimura, Nakazato, Ohba and Pascazio [Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 322, 631 (2007)] showed, at physics level of rigor, that the initial-factorization assumption behind weak-coupling master equations is self-consistently recovered: if the reservoir reference state is mixing, then even for correlated initial states of bounded-perturbation (Kraus) form the van Hove () limit of the projected dynamics satisfies a Davies-type master equation, the state is as-if-factorized at all scaled times, and no spurious terms appear. The authors left five issues open. In the subsequent literature, the timescale question was resolved by the companion Article II; rigorous theorems now exist for factorized initial states with generic mixing baths (Facchi-Ligabò-Yuasa 2017, under clustering of connected correlations) and for correlated initial states with thermal boson reservoirs (Merkli's resonance theory, 2020-2023). The surviving open core is threefold and coherent: (1) a rigorous van Hove-limit theorem for correlated initial states when the reservoir reference state is a general mixing state - in particular a nonequilibrium steady state - including unbounded initial correlations and full control of domains, topologies and interchanged limits; (2) the authors' conjecture that weak mixing (uniqueness of the point spectrum, hence only Cesàro-averaged decay of correlations) with non-transient singular-continuous spectrum still yields the theorem in a weaker sense; and (3) the structure, magnitude and complete-positivity consequences of higher-order corrections in the coupling and their interplay with initial correlations in the general bounded-perturbation class.
Background
A small quantum system S weakly coupled (strength ) to a large reservoir B is the canonical setting of open-system theory: the goal is a master equation, i.e., an autonomous, time-local equation for the reduced state of S alone. In the weak-coupling or van Hove limit one rescales time as and sends , the scale on which dissipative effects of order accumulate. Davies (1974) proved rigorously that for a factorized initial state and a thermal reservoir with decaying correlation functions, the rescaled reduced dynamics converges to a Markov semigroup generated by a Davies generator - a dissipative operator of Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKLS) form, the general structure theorem for generators of completely positive trace-preserving evolution. A KMS state is the operator-algebra formulation of thermal equilibrium; a nonequilibrium steady state (NESS) is a stationary state carrying a nonzero current, e.g., of heat, maintained between subreservoirs at different temperatures.
Two hypotheses of this construction are physically fragile: the initial factorization of system and reservoir, and the thermal character of the reservoir state. Tasaki, Yuasa, Facchi, Kimura, Nakazato, Ohba and Pascazio (2007) ('Article I') revisited both with the Nakajima-Zwanzig projection method (a technique that projects the full dynamics onto a chosen subspace, yielding an exact, generally non-Markovian equation for the relevant part). They projected onto a general stationary reference state of the reservoir, , requiring only that be mixing, i.e., that reservoir correlations decay pointwise, as for bounded observables . Thermal states of free boson fields mix, but so - the authors stress - can a NESS of a reservoir composed of subreservoirs at different temperatures or chemical potentials. The initial state was allowed to be correlated, of bounded-perturbation (Kraus) form with bounded (the Kraus form is the general shape of a quantum operation, i.e., of a completely positive trace-nonincreasing map applied to the reference state); the class includes equilibrium states and NESS as special cases.
Article I's main theorem - announced as non-rigorous ('we will restrict ourselves to the main arguments without emphasis on mathematical rigor') - states that the van Hove limit of the -projected dynamics exists and satisfies a master equation with an explicit generator of Davies type (a sum over the Bohr frequencies, i.e., differences of system energy levels, of dissipative terms built from reservoir two-point functions via the resolvent of the free Liouvillian); that no spurious terms arise; and that the state is as-if-factorized at all scaled times, for the complementary projection . Mixing is essential: under mere ergodicity (equality of time and ensemble averages) secular, i.e., systematically growing, terms appear even for factorized initial states. The proof assumes that is a simple eigenvalue of the reservoir Liouvillian with eigenvector and that the remainder of its spectrum is absolutely continuous - or at least transient, meaning its contribution to correlations decays; the absolutely continuous part is automatically transient by the Riemann-Lebesgue lemma.
The authors listed five open issues: (i) rigorous conditions for the existence of the van Hove limit, with control of domains, operator topologies and interchanged limits; (ii) concrete models quantifying when Markovianity becomes valid, including the dependence on interaction form factors and the spatial extension (locality) of reservoir observables; (iii) the behavior of singular-continuous spectral components when they are not transient, and whether weak mixing - characterized by being the unique point of the spectrum of , and equivalent to decay of Cesàro (time-averaged) correlations - suffices for a weaker version of the theorem; (iv) the structure and magnitude of higher-order (in ) corrections to the generator and their interplay with initial correlations; (v) spin-offs on complete positivity. (Singular-continuous spectrum is the part of the continuous spectrum supported on sets of zero Lebesgue measure; correlation functions of such components need not decay pointwise, only time-averaged.)
Issue (ii) was settled by the companion 'Article II'. The subsequent rigorous literature establishes two complementary partial results. Facchi, Ligabò and Yuasa (2017) proved a GKLS equation in the weak-coupling limit for factorized initial states, for a generic bath (not assumed bosonic or fermionic) whose reference state need not be thermal, under a clustering assumption: the connected -point correlation functions of the interaction are asymptotically bounded by products of two-point functions. Merkli's resonance theory - a spectral method tracking the resonances, i.e., the complex shifts of the system energy levels induced by the coupling - controls the accuracy of the Davies generator for fixed small uniformly in time; in 2023 it was extended to correlated initial states obtained by applying a quantum operation to the uncoupled equilibrium state of a thermal boson reservoir, with a polynomially decaying correlation term and an error uniform in time. Both approaches require pointwise decay or dispersion of reservoir correlations, inherited from absolutely continuous (dispersive) spectrum. What lies beyond - general mixing (including NESS) reference states with correlated initial states, weak mixing with non-transient singular-continuous spectrum, and higher orders with initial correlations - is the open problem stated below.
Problem Statement
The overarching objective is to establish, with mathematical rigor, the true domain of validity of the van Hove weak-coupling master equation when the initial system-reservoir state is correlated: for which reservoir reference states, which spectral regimes, and which perturbation orders does the physics-level theorem of Article I hold. Three linked questions are open.
(1) Correlated initial states with general mixing reference states. Prove or disprove: for a reservoir reference state that is mixing - including mixing nonequilibrium steady states carrying stationary currents, and states that are not of KMS or product form - and initial states with a quantum operation (bounded, or a precisely controlled unbounded extension of that class), the van Hove limit of the -projected dynamics exists in a specified operator topology, satisfies the master equation with generator , and the complementary projection vanishes, , with explicit control of domains and of the interchange of the limits and . Known rigorous results stop at factorized initial states for generic baths (under clustering) and at correlated initial states for thermal boson reservoirs; the correlated-state theorem for mixing non-thermal reference states, and any treatment of unbounded initial correlations, is open.
(2) Weak mixing with singular-continuous spectrum. Article I conjectures that its theorem 'is still valid, but in a weaker sense' when is the only point of the spectrum of the reservoir Liouvillian (weak mixing, i.e., only Cesàro-averaged decay of correlations) while the continuous spectrum contains singular-continuous components that are not transient. Prove or disprove the following precise form of that conjecture: for such a weakly mixing reference state whose singular-continuous spectral components are not transient, the Cesàro-averaged -projected dynamics on the scale converge to the master-equation dynamics generated by , with the complementary projection vanishing in the time-averaged sense, . A disproof must exhibit a weakly mixing, non-transient reservoir for which this time-averaged claim fails; the pointwise non-decay of correlations, already conceded for a weakly mixing, non-transient reservoir, is not by itself a disproof.
(3) Higher-order corrections with initial correlations. Determine the structure and magnitude of the higher-order (in ) corrections to the generator and their interplay with initial correlations for the full bounded-perturbation class: which corrections are secular and which are absorbed into renormalized (interaction-dressed) system or reference states, under which initial-state classes the autonomous master equation survives at each order, and whether the resulting dynamics is completely positive order by order.
These three questions jointly delimit one scientific target - the rigorous classification of when initial factorization is recovered and the master equation is valid.
