The quantum focusing conjecture (QFC) asserts that the quantum expansion, the change of Bekenstein's generalized entropy per unit transverse area along a null congruence, is non-increasing. It underlies the quantum null energy condition, the quantum Bousso bound, entanglement wedge nesting, and the island resolution of the black hole information paradox, yet for evaporating black holes it has been verified only in a single exactly solved setting: the two-dimensional Russo-Susskind-Thorlacius (RST) model with island formation and exact semiclassical backreaction, using the quantum-corrected area-like entropy Ω=e−2ϕ+cϕ/24\Omega=e^{-2\phi}+c\phi/24; the existing four-dimensional test employed the Vaidya approximation with only partially included quantum effects. The open problem is to determine the conjecture's domain of validity: whether the full QFC holds for exact solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equations describing evaporating black holes with backreaction and islands (in particular in four-dimensional Einstein gravity), and, in two dimensions, under what circumstances the QFC or its two-dimensional quantum null energy condition corollary can fail as the model, the definition of the area-like quantity, the matter content, or the vacuum state is varied. Recent work has proved the weaker restricted QFC in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and constructed explicit violations of the original QFC there in the regime where matter quantum effects compete with the dilaton, sharpening but not settling the question; the four-dimensional and RST-robustness cores remain untouched.

Background

Classical focusing and its quantum generalization. In classical general relativity the null focusing theorem follows from the Raychaudhuri equation together with the null energy condition (NEC, the requirement that Tkk≥0T_{kk}\ge 0 along any null direction): the expansion θ=(1/A) dA/dλ\theta=(1/\mathcal{A})\,d\mathcal{A}/d\lambda of a null geodesic congruence is non-increasing along its affine parameter λ\lambda. This theorem underwrites the Penrose singularity theorems and the black hole area theorem. Quantum fields violate the NEC, and the quantity that replaces the area is Bekenstein's generalized entropy Sgen=A/4GN+SoutS_{\text{gen}}=\mathcal{A}/4G_N+S_{\text{out}}, the surface term plus the von Neumann entropy of the exterior quantum fields. The generalized second law (GSL) asserts that SgenS_{\text{gen}} never decreases. Bousso, Fisher, Leichenauer and Wall proposed the quantum focusing conjecture (QFC): the quantum expansion Θ=(4GN/A) dSgen/dλ\Theta=(4G_N/\mathcal{A})\,dS_{\text{gen}}/d\lambda is non-increasing, dΘ/dλ≤0d\Theta/d\lambda\le 0. The QFC reduces to the classical focusing theorem as ℏ→0\hbar\to 0, implies the GSL, and implies on expansion-free (θ=0\theta=0) null surfaces the quantum null energy condition (QNEC), 2π⟨Tkk⟩≥Sout′′2\pi\langle T_{kk}\rangle\ge S_{\text{out}}'', a bound since proven directly in quantum field theory for fixed-background fields; the corresponding inequality derived as a corollary in a backreacted semiclassical model is a distinct statement. It also underlies the quantum Bousso bound, the covariant upper limit on the entropy that can flow through a null hypersurface, and entanglement wedge nesting, the containment of the entanglement wedge (the bulk region reconstructible from the state of a boundary subregion) inside that of any larger subregion. The QFC itself remains a conjecture: it is violated by classical higher-curvature corrections in spacetime dimension d≥5d\ge 5, and its QNEC corollary is violated in a holographic wormhole through infrared effects. A weaker restricted QFC (monotonicity only where Θ=0\Theta=0) has been proven in holographic braneworlds and adopted as an axiom in axiomatic formulations of semiclassical gravity.

Evaporation, the Page curve, and islands. Hawking evaporation presents the QFC with its sharpest test. The entanglement entropy of the radiation initially rises, then, for unitary evaporation, turns over at the Page time (the moment at which the radiation entropy equals the black hole entropy) and decreases. In the island paradigm the generalized entropy of the radiation includes contributions from regions inside the black hole (islands) whose boundaries are quantum extremal surfaces (surfaces extremizing SgenS_{\text{gen}} rather than the area); this reproduces unitary Page curves. After the Page time both the horizon area and the radiation entropy decrease, so neither the classical focusing theorem nor any naive monotonicity argument protects the QFC; its status in the evaporation epoch is genuinely nontrivial.

Exactly solvable two-dimensional models. Two-dimensional dilaton gravity provides black holes whose semiclassical (one-loop) equations of motion are exactly solvable. The Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) model couples two-dimensional gravity to a dilaton and conformal matter; the Russo-Susskind-Thorlacius (RST) extension adds a local counterterm that preserves a residual conformal symmetry that the quantum anomaly of the matter fields (with central charge cc, counting the number of effectively massless matter fields) would otherwise break, and this makes the quantum-corrected area-like entropy Ω=e−2ϕ+cϕ/24\Omega=e^{-2\phi}+c\phi/24 the natural two-dimensional analogue of the horizon area, so that Sgen=2Ω+SoutS_{\text{gen}}=2\Omega+S_{\text{out}}. Since a codimension-two surface degenerates to a point in two dimensions, the quantum expansion must itself be redefined; Ishibashi, Matsuo and Tanaka define Θ=(1/2Ω) dSgen/dλ\Theta=(1/2\Omega)\,dS_{\text{gen}}/d\lambda (rejecting the unnormalized dSgen/dλdS_{\text{gen}}/d\lambda, which misbehaves already in the classical limit) and prove the QFC for evaporating RST black holes with islands in near- and away-from-horizon regimes, tracking how the island position responds to the anchor (the endpoint, on the asymptotic boundary, of the interval of radiation modes whose entropy is computed). Their analysis shows that the island saddle exists only in a window of the anchor position and merges with a false saddle (a local maximum of SgenS_{\text{gen}}) at a critical location. On expansion-free null surfaces their QFC implies the two-dimensional QNEC e−4ρT++≥d2Sout/dλ2e^{-4\rho}T_{++}\ge d^2S_{\text{out}}/d\lambda^2, with ρ\rho the conformal factor of the two-dimensional metric ds2=−e2ρdx+dx−ds^2=-e^{2\rho}dx^+dx^-. They stress that the exact two-dimensional verification was motivated by the four-dimensional problem: the predecessor analysis of Matsuo verified the QFC for a four-dimensional spherically symmetric evaporating black hole, but on a background approximated by the Vaidya metric (an exact solution sourced by null dust, standing in for the evaporating geometry), with only partially included quantum effects, leaving open whether the QFC holds for exact solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equations.

The JT-gravity turn. Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, two-dimensional dilaton gravity with a linear dilaton potential, admits the parallel definition Θ=(4G/Φ) dSgen/dλ\Theta=(4G/\Phi)\,dS_{\text{gen}}/d\lambda with dilaton Φ\Phi and Sgen=Φ/4G+SrenS_{\text{gen}}=\Phi/4G+S_{\text{ren}}. Almheiri, Mahajan and Maldacena used the two-dimensional QNEC to argue for the QFC in this model; with the standard dilaton normalization their argument establishes only the restricted QFC, as re-analyzed by Franken, Kaya, Rondeau, Shahbazi-Moghaddam and Tran, who proved the restricted QFC in JT gravity coupled to a quantum field theory and constructed explicit violations of the original QFC when the species scale ℓS=cG\ell_S=cG (the matter backreaction scale, held fixed as G→0G\to0 and c→∞c\to\infty) is comparable to or exceeds the dilaton, near an extremal AdS2_2 (two-dimensional anti-de Sitter) black hole in equilibrium with a bath (an auxiliary non-gravitating region that absorbs the Hawking flux) and near an evaporating horizon of two-dimensional de Sitter space. The QFC is guaranteed in the opposite regime where the dilaton parametrically dominates and JT admits a higher-dimensional interpretation. This recent line makes the definition- and regime-dependence of the full QFC in two dimensions a sharp, actively studied question, while leaving the RST-robustness and four-dimensional questions open.

Problem Statement

The problem is to determine the domain of validity of the quantum focusing conjecture (QFC) for semiclassical evaporating black holes with islands, beyond the single exactly solved two-dimensional realization in the Russo-Susskind-Thorlacius (RST) model. Concretely: (1) Exact-semiclassical extension. Does the QFC, meaning the monotonicity dΘ/dλ≤0d\Theta/d\lambda\le 0 of the quantum expansion Θ=(4GN/A) dSgen/dλ\Theta=(4G_N/\mathcal{A})\,dS_{\text{gen}}/d\lambda of the generalized entropy including the island contribution to the matter entropy, hold for exact solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equations describing evaporating black holes with full backreaction and islands? In four-dimensional Einstein gravity no exact dynamical semiclassical evaporating solution is known, and the only four-dimensional test used the Vaidya approximation with partially included quantum effects; whether the QFC holds for a genuinely higher-dimensional semiclassical spacetime with islands is unsettled. (2) Two-dimensional failure circumstances. Under what circumstances can the QFC, or its corollary the two-dimensional QNEC (the bound e−4ρT++≥d2Sout/dλ2e^{-4\rho}T_{++}\ge d^2S_{\text{out}}/d\lambda^2 on expansion-free null surfaces in the RST normalization, with T++T_{++} the matter stress tensor of the backreacted semiclassical model), fail in two dimensions? Explicit violations of the original QFC have been constructed in JT gravity when the species scale cGcG competes with the dilaton, while the QFC is proven in regimes where the dilaton dominates; the open question is to clarify under what circumstances the full QFC and its QNEC corollary can fail in two dimensions as the model, the definition of the quantum expansion, the matter content, or the vacuum state is varied. (3) Robustness of the RST conclusions. Do the RST conclusions survive a different choice of the area-like quantity normalizing Θ\Theta (the quantum-corrected Ω=e−2ϕ+cϕ/24\Omega=e^{-2\phi}+c\phi/24 versus a bare dilaton), non-conformal matter content, or different vacuum and boundary conditions (different choices of the functions t±t_\pm that encode the boundary conditions in the matter stress tensor of the RST equations)? Items (2) and (3) are coupled: the JT counterexamples demonstrate that the normalization of the quantum expansion by the area-like quantity is precisely what controls whether monotonicity holds once quantum effects are comparable to that quantity. Each of (1), (2) and (3) is an independently refutable sub-question: a conclusive answer to any one resolves that item and leaves the others open, and the standing of all three must be settled for the task to be complete. The variations enumerated within (2) and (3) are alternative settings to be tested one by one, so an answer to either item must address each variation it invokes.
