Marchetto, Sfondrini and Yang [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 100601 (2020)] showed that current-current deformations of two-dimensional integrable quantum field theories - of which the TTˉT\bar T deformation is the prototype - admit a lattice analogue: bilocal deformations of integrable spin chains whose deforming operator is a discretized current-current composite with the same factorization property as Zamolodchikov's TTˉT\bar T, preserving integrability and deforming the spin-chain S-matrix by a CDD-type factor. The construction is, however, asymptotic: it is well-defined only for infinitely long chains, while on finite chains the deforming operator wraps around the chain, so no exact finite-volume spectral flow equations analogous to the continuum Burgers-type TTˉT\bar T flow exist. The momentum-energy deformation [P∣H][\mathbf{P}|\mathbf{H}] - the case closest to actual TTˉT\bar T - is obstructed on the lattice because momentum is the logarithm of the shift operator, a nonlocal object whose branch choices spoil the p→p+2πp\to p+2\pi periodicity of the would-be deformed Bethe equations; and the continuum limit of the deformed chains to TTˉT\bar T-deformed quantum field theories remains to be constructed. The open problem is to complete this lattice realization: an exact finite-volume formulation incorporating wrapping, a well-defined momentum-energy deformation, higher-charge deformations with exact finite-volume spectra, and a controlled continuum limit bridging the spin-chain and quantum-field-theory pictures. The subsequent literature through August 2026 contains substantial partial progress - hard-rod deformations of XXZ chains, finite-size long-range chains with wrapping corrections, scaling limits of deformed RSOS (restricted solid-on-solid) models, a deformed light-cone lattice regularization of sine-Gordon - but none of the core questions is resolved.

Background

In a two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory (IQFT) - a theory with infinitely many mutually commuting conserved charges, solvable by the Bethe ansatz, i.e. by the quantization conditions that the particle momenta pjp_j obey in a finite volume RR - the TTˉT\bar T deformation is the solvable deformation generated by the composite operator OTTˉ∼∫dx ϵμνTμ0Tν1\mathcal{O}_{T\bar T}\sim\int dx\,\epsilon_{\mu\nu}T^{\mu0}T^{\nu1} built from the stress tensor TμνT^{\mu\nu}. Zamolodchikov showed that this composite is well-defined by point splitting and that its expectation value factorizes on energy-momentum eigenstates, which turns the deformation into a closed flow equation for the finite-volume spectrum - the inviscid Burgers equation

∂αH(R,α)=H ∂RH+P2R,\partial_\alpha H(R,\alpha)=H\,\partial_R H+\frac{P^2}{R},

with PP the quantized momentum; this is Eq. (4) of the source paper. In Bethe-ansatz language the same deformation multiplies the two-particle S-matrix by a momentum-dependent pure phase of CDD type (a scalar factor, in the sense of Castillejo-Dalitz-Dyson), so integrability is preserved; the deformed theory is nevertheless nonlocal and, because the deformation is irrelevant in the Wilsonian sense, has no conventional ultraviolet completion. Generalized current-current deformations, in which the stress-tensor currents are replaced by other conserved currents or by the higher-spin charges of the IQFT, behave similarly and are understood on the continuum side via flow equations (Le Floch-Mezei; Hernandez-Chifflet-Negro-Sfondrini). Integrable spin chains - one-dimensional lattice models such as the Heisenberg XXX and XXZ chains, diagonalized by the Bethe ansatz and equipped with an infinite commuting family of charges Hn\mathbf{H}_n - are the natural lattice analogues of IQFTs. A construction of Bargheer, Beisert and Loebbert (BBL), originally developed for the long-range spin chains of planar N=4\mathcal{N}=4 super-Yang-Mills theory, 'boosts' a nearest-neighbour chain to a long-range one by bilocal operators [Q1∣Q2]=∑a<bQ1[a]Q2[b][\mathbf{Q}_1|\mathbf{Q}_2]=\sum_{a<b}\mathbf{Q}_1^{[a]}\mathbf{Q}_2^{[b]} built from two densities acting at two separated sites. Pozsgay-Jiang-Takacs and Marchetto-Sfondrini-Yang (MSY; the source of the present problem) recognized that these bilocal deformations are the lattice analogue of TTˉT\bar T-type current-current deformations: the deforming operator is a discretized current-current composite obeying a discrete continuity law, its expectation value factorizes exactly as in Zamolodchikov's case, integrability (the commuting charge algebra) is preserved, and the spin-chain S-matrix acquires a CDD-type factor. The lattice construction is nevertheless incomplete in three structural ways, all identified in the source paper. First, wrapping: bilocal deformation operators grow in spatial range as the deformation proceeds, so they are well-defined only asymptotically, on chains longer than the operator's range; on a finite chain of length LL the operator 'wraps' around the periodic chain, and no exact finite-volume statement - no analogue of the Burgers flow at finite chain length - is known. Second, momentum: on a lattice, momentum P\mathbf{P} is a branch of the logarithm of the shift operator U\mathbf{U} (the operator translating the chain by one site), not a local density. The momentum-energy deformation [P∣H][\mathbf{P}|\mathbf{H}], which should correspond most closely to the actual TTˉT\bar T deformation, therefore leads to would-be deformed Bethe equations eipj(R+αH)−iαHjP∏k≠jS(pj,pk)=1e^{ip_j(R+\alpha H)-i\alpha H_jP}\prod_{k\neq j}S(p_j,p_k)=1 that are not invariant under the lattice momentum periodicity p→p+2πp\to p+2\pi (because αH\alpha H, unlike the volume RR, is not quantized), so they do not define a lattice system; and the BBL construction does not apply, since [P∣H][\mathbf{P}|\mathbf{H}] is not bilocal. Third, the continuum limit: taking a deformed lattice model to a continuum current-current-deformed IQFT - the step needed to make the spin-chain and QFT pictures two descriptions of one object - is, in the authors' words, a highly non-trivial challenge, with the momentum operator expected to be recovered only in that limit. In addition, deformations built from higher charges [Hn∣Hm][\mathbf{H}_n|\mathbf{H}_m] produce increasingly long-range operators whose finite-volume spectra may require generalized (mirror) Gibbs-ensemble or thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) inputs - the generalized Gibbs ensemble being the stationary ensemble built from all conserved charges of an integrable model, and 'mirror' referring to the analytic continuation to the spatial direction used in AdS/CFT integrability. The question carries an additional motivation from string theory: CDD factors of exactly this type appear in the Bethe-Yang equations of the AdS3/CFT2AdS_3/CFT_2 worldsheet integrable system, where in special backgrounds the finite-volume spectrum is described by those equations exactly (wrapping is absent and the TBA trivializes), which calls for a quantum-mechanical - as opposed to field-theoretic - interpretation that a lattice TTˉT\bar T framework might provide.

Problem Statement

Complete the lattice realization of TTˉT\bar T-type current-current deformations of integrable spin chains, with the goal of a controlled bridge between the spin-chain and integrable-QFT pictures. The requested results are facets of one construction rather than independent deliverables: a lattice deformation that is not exact at finite volume cannot be matched in a controlled way to a continuum theory, and the momentum-energy case is the deformation closest to actual TTˉT\bar T, so a lattice program without it does not realize the QFT correspondence.

  1. Finite-volume exactness. Define the deformed model on chains of finite length LL - incorporating the wrapping effects that invalidate the asymptotic bilocal construction - and derive exact spectral flow equations for the finite-volume energy levels as functions of the deformation parameter, analogous to the continuum Burgers-type TTˉT\bar T flow, valid for all LL rather than only in the L→∞L\to\infty regime.
  2. Momentum-energy deformation. Construct a well-defined lattice analogue of [P∣H][\mathbf{P}|\mathbf{H}] - for instance by resolving the logarithmic branch structure of the lattice momentum on a suitable covering space, or by replacing momentum with a suitable local surrogate, among other possible routes - such that the resulting deformed Bethe equations are consistent with lattice momentum periodicity p→p+2πp\to p+2\pi and define an integrable lattice system.
  3. Continuum limit. Construct and control the continuum limit of the deformed lattice models, showing how the lattice currents and their discrete continuity laws converge to continuum local currents, and that the limit reproduces the corresponding continuum TTˉT\bar T- or generalized current-current-deformed IQFT (matching its known finite-volume spectra and CDD-deformed S-matrices).
  4. Generalized deformations. Extend the construction to deformations built from higher charges [Hn∣Hm][\mathbf{H}_n|\mathbf{H}_m], characterizing the resulting increasingly long-range operators and their exact finite-volume spectra - including the generalized (mirror) Gibbs-ensemble or TBA inputs where needed. A complete answer may proceed model by model, but it must address the three core facets (finite-volume exactness, the momentum-energy case, and the continuum match) - together with the generalized higher-charge deformation of item 4 - for one explicitly named integrable chain family that is at least as general as the anisotropic Heisenberg (XXZ) chain, with the range of validity of each construction stated explicitly. Partial instances are known - the hard-rod deformation of the XXZ chains, scaling limits of deformed RSOS (restricted solid-on-solid) models, and a proposed deformed light-cone lattice regularization of sine-Gordon - and the later literature explicitly treats them as special cases or proposals that leave the general problem open.
