In the Ising spin chain with transverse and longitudinal fields, the longitudinal field confines domain walls into mesonic bound states, and quench dynamics proceeds in stages: rapid relaxation to a prethermal Gibbs ensemble with approximately conserved meson number, followed by rare-event avalanches, and finally true thermalization driven by meson-number violation through a mechanism akin to the Schwinger effect of pair creation from the vacuum by a strong field, at times exponential in the inverse longitudinal field. This problem formulates the open theory question left by Birnkammer, Bastianello, and Knap (Nature Communications 13, 7663 (2022)): constructing a quantitative kinetic theory that incorporates microscopic meson creation–annihilation rates and describes the drift from the prethermal meson-conserving ensemble to the true thermal state, together with the extension of the prethermal description to direct meson–meson interactions beyond the dilute hard-rod approximation, in particular under power-law long-range couplings.
Background
Far-from-equilibrium quantum many-body systems often approach thermal equilibrium in stages rather than monotonically. Prethermalization is the phenomenon in which observables first plateau at values captured by a statistical ensemble reflecting an approximate conservation law, with full thermalization deferred to much later times. A clean theoretical setting exhibiting this is the ferromagnetic Ising chain in both a transverse and a longitudinal field, where the transverse field makes domain walls mobile (at the model maps to free fermions by a Jordan–Wigner transformation, i.e. a rewriting of spins in terms of fermionic variables, and is ordered for ), while the longitudinal field explicitly breaks the spin-flip symmetry and confines domain walls: separating two domain walls by a distance costs the string energy , with the renormalized ground-state magnetization. The spectrum therefore reorganizes into mesons — bound states of domain walls held together by the linear confining potential, in close analogy to confinement in particle physics. Starting from one of the two symmetry-broken ground states at and suddenly switching on both field components (e.g. from to , in the reference protocol), Birnkammer, Bastianello, and Knap established the following multi-stage picture, combining tensor-network simulations (variational representations of many-body quantum states as networks of small tensors, enabling simulations of chains far beyond exact diagonalization) with semiclassical analytics. First, local observables rapidly relax to a prethermal state described by a Gibbs ensemble of a gas of mesons with an exactly conserved meson number; its thermodynamics is that of a multi-species hard-rod gas (mesons treated as impenetrable rods of length , i.e. an excluded-volume approximation), with meson energies quantized semiclassically by the Bohr–Sommerfeld rule , which assigns energy levels to classical periodic orbits of the confining motion. The hard-rod description is controlled only at low meson density; deviations are already visible at . Second, meson number is only approximately conserved: meson pairs are slowly created out of the ordered background by a mechanism akin to the Schwinger effect — pair creation from the vacuum by a strong field, here the longitudinal field acting on the domain-wall 'charges'. Rare nucleation events trigger an avalanche of meson collisions that sets the mesons in motion and drives relaxation to the prethermal Gibbs ensemble on a timescale that is algebraic in the model parameters (with the avalanche length and the meson velocity). Third, true thermalization, in which meson number is violated by Schwinger-type processes, requires a time that is exponential in — a parametric separation exploited through the truncated Wigner approximation (TWA, a semiclassical phase-space method that samples quantum states as classical distributions and evolves them classically, accurate when quantum interference is negligible) applied to a projected dynamics that enforces meson-number conservation. Related earlier results set the stage: entanglement dynamics in confining spin chains was computed by Scopa, Calabrese, and Bastianello; numerical studies of the tilted (confined) Ising chain by Verdel, Zhu, and Heyl found a dynamical localization transition in string breaking, i.e. a dichotomy between fast and dynamically-suppressed string breaking depending on quench parameters; and Surace et al. mapped the confinement physics of lattice gauge theories onto Rydberg-atom quantum simulators. What the reference work did not provide is a kinetic theory — a Boltzmann-type description with microscopic meson-number-changing rates — nor any treatment of meson–meson interactions beyond the dilute hard-rod approximation, which is the problem formulated here.
Problem Statement
Construct a quantitative theory of thermalization for one-dimensional quantum systems with confined excitations, beyond the dilute meson-number-conserving approximation, as left open by Birnkammer, Bastianello, and Knap. The single overarching objective is a controlled, quantitative description of how the prethermal meson-conserving Gibbs ensemble drifts to the true thermal state, comprising three jointly supporting components: (1) derive from the microscopic confined-chain Hamiltonian (the tilted Ising chain being the reference realization, and generic one-dimensional systems with linearly confined domain-wall excitations) the rates of meson-number-changing processes — Schwinger-type creation of meson pairs out of the ordered background and inelastic fusion or fission of mesons — going beyond the order-of-magnitude estimates of the source work; (2) build from these rates a kinetic theory (a Boltzmann-type description, or an alternative controlled framework) that quantitatively describes the drift from the prethermal plateau to thermal equilibrium: the time dependence of local observables such as the longitudinal magnetization and energy-density observables through the crossover, and the thermalization time with its parametric dependence on and meson density, including how the avalanche mechanism terminates in the number-violating regime; and (3) extend the prethermal description to direct meson–meson interactions beyond the hard-rod excluded-volume approximation, in particular for power-law long-range couplings, determining how such interactions modify the prethermal regime, the avalanche, and the timescale separations. The three components form one coherent objective — a quantitative theory of confined-chain thermalization beyond the number-conserving dilute approximation — and component (3) is the same extension needed wherever (2) is applied at non-dilute meson densities. The method is otherwise unconstrained: semiclassical treatments must come with controlled quantum corrections (the regime where Bohr–Sommerfeld quantization of the meson spectrum and the truncated Wigner approximation fail, i.e. when the fermion bandwidth is comparable to the longitudinal field, must be handled), and purely numerical demonstrations do not by themselves constitute the requested theory. A complete answer demonstrates quantitative validity against specified benchmarks such as the source quench protocol (from to , , and neighboring values) where exact-diagonalization or tensor-network data exist. The tilted Ising chain is the reference realization and a complete answer must handle it explicitly; the generic confined class and the power-law long-range couplings of component (3) must be covered by the same theory but may be argued analytically or qualitatively, since quantitative benchmarks exist only for the reference chain.
