Ae and Sakai (J. Stat. Mech. 2024) evaluated the finite-temperature spin Drude weight of the integrable arbitrary-spin XXZ chain in the critical regime exactly, by constructing the fused quantum transfer matrices, deriving the T- and Y-system functional relations, and combining the resulting thermodynamic Bethe ansatz with generalized hydrodynamics; in the infinite-temperature limit they obtained a closed-form expression with a popcorn-like, everywhere-discontinuous dependence on the anisotropy. Their conclusions list five unresolved issues; the fifth, the infinite-temperature Onsager element of spin transport for the spin-1/2 chain, has since been obtained by Ae (2024), and the remaining four are open: the low-temperature and zero-temperature behavior of the Drude weight for spin S>1/2S>1/2 across the several admissible anisotropy intervals with their distinct low-energy branches; whether the continued-fraction limit defines the physical Drude weight at exactly irrational anisotropy; an independent Kohn-formula (twisted-boundary-condition) derivation for the fused transfer matrices and its equivalence with the GHD/TBA result; and a quantitative, ideally rigorous, characterization of superdiffusive spin transport at the isotropic point for higher spin. The problem asks for these missing pieces of the exact transport theory of the arbitrary-spin XXZ chain.

Background

The XXZ chain is the one-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg quantum spin chain. For spin quantum number S=1/2S=1/2 it is H=J∑j(SjxSj+1x+SjySj+1y+ΔSjzSj+1z)H=J\sum_j(S^x_jS^x_{j+1}+S^y_jS^y_{j+1}+\Delta S^z_jS^z_{j+1}), where SjαS^\alpha_j are spin operators on site jj and Δ\Delta is the anisotropy. Integrable (exactly solvable by the Bethe ansatz, a scheme that diagonalizes one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians through scattering data) generalizations to arbitrary spin SS were constructed by Kirillov and Reshetikhin via a fusion procedure — gluing several spin-1/2 vertices into single higher-rank ones — applied to the six-vertex model, the two-dimensional classical statistical model whose transfer matrix generates the XXZ Hamiltonian; the S=1S=1 case is the Zamolodchikov–Fateev model. In the critical, gapless easy-plane regime the anisotropy is parametrized as Δ=cos⁡(π/p0)\Delta=\cos(\pi/p_0) with p0≥2p_0\ge 2. Crucially, for S≥1S\ge 1 the fused Hamiltonian has a real spectrum only on restricted intervals of Δ\Delta; for integer S>2S>2 and half-odd-integer S>7/2S>7/2 the admissible set splits into several disjoint intervals, and the low-energy physics in each interval is governed by a different conformal field theory (Frahm, Yu and Fowler). This multi-branch spectrum is the main structural difference from the spin-1/2 case. The spin Drude weight DsD_s quantifies ballistic (dissipationless) spin transport: it is the weight of the zero-frequency delta-function contribution to the spin conductivity, equivalently the long-time plateau of the spin-current autocorrelation. Kohn's formula computes it from the curvature of the energy levels under a twist of the boundary conditions. For the spin-1/2 XXZ chain in the critical regime, the finite-temperature DsD_s was a long-standing debate: Zotos computed it by combining Kohn's formula with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA), the exact finite-temperature formalism built on the infinitely many stable quasiparticle bound states ('strings') of the Bethe ansatz; quasilocal (with support spread over a large region rather than strictly local) conserved charges and their Mazur bounds — lower bounds on the Drude weight obtained from its overlaps with conserved quantities — gave an independent route whose high-temperature limit coincides with the TBA result; and generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), the exact hydrodynamic theory of integrable systems built on their TBA description, reproduced Zotos's formula (Urichuk, Oez, Klümper and Sirker). The dependence of DsD_s on Δ\Delta exhibits a 'popcorn' structure — discontinuous at every rational p0p_0 — explained by the degenerate representation theory of the quantum group Uq(sl2)U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2), the one-parameter deformation of the spin-rotation algebra, at roots of unity (Ilievski). Ae and Sakai extended this exact evaluation to arbitrary spin. Constructing the fusion hierarchy of quantum transfer matrices (QTMs, the transfer matrices of a two-dimensional classical model whose largest eigenvalue encodes the chain's finite-temperature free energy) and their functional relations (the T- and Y-systems), they reduced the problem to TBA equations and, through GHD, evaluated DsD_s at arbitrary finite temperature β=1/T\beta=1/T at zero magnetic field, and exactly at infinite temperature, finding the popcorn structure at all spins and a Drude weight that behaves differently in each admissible anisotropy interval. Their formulation is restricted to rational p0p_0, because the string content of the Bethe ansatz at given p0p_0 is organized by the continued-fraction expansion of p0=π/θp_0=\pi/\theta truncated at depth α\alpha, which generates the admissible string lengths (the Takahashi–Suzuki numbers). For the spin-1/2 chain, the low-temperature Drude weight is known analytically: D(T)=D(0)−a(Δ)T2K−2−b1(Δ)T2D(T)=D(0)-a(\Delta)T^{2K-2}-b_1(\Delta)T^2, with KK the Luttinger parameter (the coefficient governing the low-energy conformal field theory of the chain), a closed-form coefficient a(Δ)a(\Delta) with fractal dependence on Δ\Delta, and a field-theoretic b1b_1 (Urichuk, Sirker and Klümper). At the isotropic point Δ=1\Delta=1 (as in the massive regime Δ>1\Delta>1) the Drude weight vanishes and transport is believed to be superdiffusive, i.e. governed by a dynamical exponent zz, defined by the scaling of typical spin displacement x∼t1/zx\sim t^{1/z}, equal to 3/23/2; extensive numerics for higher-spin integrable chains (Ilievski, De Nardis, Medenjak and Prosen; Dupont and Moore) and the 'superuniversality' theory of giant quasiparticles dressed by thermal fluctuations (Ilievski, De Nardis, Gopalakrishnan, Vasseur and Ware) support the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (KPZ) value z=3/2z=3/2, but no rigorous dynamical exponent exists even at S=1/2S=1/2, and fluctuation observables show deviations from naive KPZ predictions (Krajnik, Ilievski and Prosen). Beyond the ballistic sector, diffusive transport coefficients are encoded in the Onsager matrix — the regular, non-delta part of the current-current correlation function, computable within GHD from dressed two-particle scattering phases (De Nardis, Bernard and Doyon); for the spin-1/2 chain at infinite temperature this element was computed by Ae using precisely the higher-spin TBA kernels of the present framework.

Problem Statement

Complete the exact characterization of spin transport in the integrable arbitrary-spin XXZ chain in the critical regime, by resolving the four issues that remain open among the five listed by Ae and Sakai (arXiv:2309.16462, J. Stat. Mech. (2024) 033104) — the fifth issue, the infinite-temperature Onsager matrix element of spin transport at zero magnetic field for the spin-1/2 chain, has since been obtained by Ae (2024) and is therefore no longer open: (a) Low-temperature behavior: derive, analytically, the low-temperature behavior of the spin Drude weight Ds(T)D_s(T), including the T→0T\to 0 limit, for arbitrary spin SS in each admissible anisotropy interval — the analogue of the spin-1/2 result D(T)=D(0)−a(Δ)T2K−2−b1(Δ)T2D(T)=D(0)-a(\Delta)T^{2K-2}-b_1(\Delta)T^2 — clarifying how the multiple low-energy branches and several distinct Fermi velocities of the higher-spin chains modify the leading scaling. (b) Irrational anisotropy: determine whether the physical spin Drude weight at exactly irrational p0p_0 equals the α→∞\alpha\to\infty continued-fraction limit of the rational-p0p_0 results (as the convergent infinite-temperature expressions suggest), by proving the convergence or exhibiting a discrepancy. (c) Kohn-formula derivation: derive Ds(β)D_s(\beta) independently from Kohn's formula with a twisted boundary condition imposed on the fused row transfer matrices — a twist that shifts the Bethe-ansatz string centers and requires the second-order expansion of the twisted eigenvalues in the twist angle — and demonstrate equivalence with (or disagreement with) the GHD/TBA formula of Ae and Sakai. (d) Isotropic point: for higher spin S>1/2S>1/2 at and near Δ=1\Delta=1, where the Drude weight vanishes, characterize the spin transport quantitatively: derive the dynamical exponent (testing the predicted z=3/2z=3/2) and compute the diffusion constants, including their divergence at Δ=1\Delta=1 (the signature of superdiffusion). The completion boundary is the resolution of all four items, each of which is independently checkable; progress on individual items constitutes meaningful partial progress.
