The -twisted trigonometric sigma models, introduced by Hamidi and Hoare from four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory on a cylinder with a branch cut along the non-compact direction, are a new class of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model, generalising the - and -models together with four doubly-deformed descendants (the Yang-Baxter- and current-current-deformed twisted - and -models). Their actions, Lax connections and, for , explicit target-space backgrounds are known, and for a outer-automorphism twist of , , the models are demonstrably inequivalent to untwisted ones; but their complete characterisation is missing. Three interlinked problems are open: (i) classify, for general simple and all order- automorphisms, when a twisted model is equivalent to an untwisted model and enumerate the inequivalent models, conjecturally via the outer automorphisms of ; (ii) compute the Hamiltonian integrable structure — the Maillet Poisson bracket of the Lax matrix, the conserved-charge algebra from the monodromy, and the underlying affine Gaudin model description; (iii) determine the quantum S-matrix structure, including whether the symmetries quantise to -deformed twisted affine Lie algebras, and the renormalisation-group flow.
Background
Two-dimensional integrable sigma models are a laboratory for exactly solvable quantum field theory. The principal chiral model (PCM) is the sigma model whose target space is a Lie group , with action proportional to where are the group currents. Two integrable one-parameter deformations of the PCM are central to the subject: the Yang-Baxter or -deformation (Klimcik 2002), built from an antisymmetric solution of the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation (an operator on the Lie algebra satisfying a consistency condition ensuring integrability), and the -deformation (Sfetsos 2014), an integrable interpolation between the Wess-Zumino-Witten model (the conformal sigma model on with a topological Wess-Zumino term) and the non-abelian T-dual of the PCM (a target-space dual obtained by gauging a group symmetry and integrating out the gauge fields); the two are related by Poisson-Lie duality, a duality acting on the target-space Poisson structure.
Both arise from a construction based on four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory (Costello-Yamazaki; Delduc-Lacroix-Magro-Vicedo): one starts from the 4d action , where is a meromorphic one-form, the twist function, on the complex 'spectral' plane times the 2d spacetime . The poles of act as two-dimensional boundaries on which the degrees of freedom of the resulting sigma model live, while the zeroes ('disorder defects') encode the integrable structure. Solving the bulk equations with suitable (Lagrangian) boundary conditions produces a 2d action together with a Lax connection — a 1-form depending meromorphically on the spectral parameter whose zero-curvature condition is equivalent to the equations of motion. When the spectral surface is a cylinder (equivalently with simple poles at and ) the models are called trigonometric; the - and -models are the two simplest examples.
Hamidi and Hoare introduced a twisting of this construction: a branch cut is inserted along the non-compact direction of the cylinder, and crossing it acts on the fields by an order- automorphism of . Passing to the -fold cover of the cylinder and imposing -equivariance of the twist function yields a new class of 2d integrable sigma models, with the projectors onto the eigenspaces of appearing explicitly in the actions (for the -twisted -model, schematically, ). A novel feature is that the branch points sit at the simple poles at the ends of the cylinder, so the twisted and untwisted models have the same number of degrees of freedom. For -type models the R-matrix must in addition commute with ; for -type models there is no such restriction. Two particular cases had appeared earlier: a -equivariant truncation of the 4d Chern-Simons construction (Fukushima-Sakamoto-Yoshida), with a covering-space interpretation proposed by Tian, and the -deformation of the PCM with spectators (Borsato-Itsios-Miramontes-Siampos).
The paper defines two models as equivalent if they are related by parameter-dependent field redefinitions, dropping a closed -field (the antisymmetric two-form background of the sigma model, closed meaning vanishing field strength ), and 2d spacetime dualities. With this notion, all -twisted and models with inner are equivalent to untwisted ones. However, the -twisted -model, , twisted by the Dynkin-diagram outer automorphism (the non-trivial reflection symmetry of the Dynkin diagram, corresponding to the map on the complexified algebra), has different global symmetries from any untwisted model — the right-acting Cartan shifts generated outside the fixed-point subalgebra are lost — and in the model twisted by the automorphism swapping the two factors the -field is no longer closed; hence some twisted models are genuinely new integrable sigma models.
What is known for the untwisted trigonometric models sets the benchmark the twisted models have not reached. First, the untwisted - and -models form a small, explicitly understood family. Second, on the Hamiltonian side, models built from 4d Chern-Simons with Lagrangian boundary conditions are known to be Hamiltonian integrable in the sense that the Poisson bracket of the Lax matrix takes Maillet's non-ultralocal -form (a bracket mixing two meromorphic matrices and ), and they admit a description as affine Gaudin models — integrable systems labelled by the sites (poles) and levels (residues) of the twist function (Vicedo; Lacroix-Vicedo), which unifies the - and -models, their -model (first-order, doubled-target-space) formulations and their Poisson-Lie dualities. Third, on the quantum side, the -deformed PCM has -deformed affine symmetry (Delduc-Lacroix-Magro-Vicedo; Delduc-Kameyama-Magro-Vicedo), its massive S-matrix factorizes into R-matrices of -deformed untwisted affine type, and the trigonometric R-matrices associated with -deformed untwisted and twisted affine Lie algebras are known (Jimbo), where affine Lie algebras are the loop-algebra extensions of and twisted affine Lie algebras are built from the fixed points of a diagram automorphism. For the simplest twisted case, with , Appadu-Hollowood-Price-Thompson derived conserved charges from the monodromy matrix (the path-ordered exponential of the Lax connection around the spatial circle) and proposed exact S-matrices for the corresponding anisotropic models on symmetry and RG grounds. Elliptic relatives of the whole setup, where the spectral surface is a torus, have also been constructed (Lacroix-Wallberg).
Problem Statement
Bring the -twisted trigonometric sigma models of Hamidi-Hoare (the twisted - and -models for all , together with their four doubly-deformed descendants, the Yang-Baxter- and current-current-deformed twisted - and -models, constructed at ) to the same level of characterisation as their untwisted counterparts, by solving three interlinked problems.
-
Equivalence classification. For each simple Lie algebra , each real form, each , and each order- automorphism (inner or outer; together with each split or non-split R-matrix — a solution of the split, respectively non-split, real version of the modified classical Yang-Baxter equation, associated with the split, respectively compact, real form of — commuting with where the model requires one), determine whether the resulting -twisted trigonometric sigma model is equivalent to an untwisted trigonometric sigma model — equivalence being up to parameter-dependent field redefinitions, dropping a closed -field, and 2d spacetime dualities — and give a complete enumeration of the inequivalent twisted models (the twisted - and -models for all , and the four doubly-deformed descendants at their constructed case ). This includes deciding the conjecture that the inequivalent twisted -models are enumerated by the (conjugacy classes of) outer automorphisms of , and determining for which order- automorphisms no admissible R-matrix commuting with exists, so that a twisted -model does not exist while a twisted -model does.
-
Hamiltonian integrable structure. Compute the Poisson bracket of the Lax matrix of the twisted models in Maillet's non-ultralocal -form; extract the conserved charges from the monodromy matrix and establish their algebra, including whether it closes on a -deformed algebra at the classical (Poisson-bracket) level; and identify the underlying affine Gaudin model — or the appropriate twisted/cyclic generalisation of the affine Gaudin model formalism — including the first-order -model formulation and the Poisson-Lie duality with respect to the fixed-point subgroup of the automorphism.
-
Quantum integrability and S-matrices. Compute the renormalisation-group flow of the twisted models (directly in 2d or via 4d Chern-Simons methods), determine their quantum S-matrices, and establish whether the symmetries of the -twisted -models quantise to -deformed twisted affine Lie algebras — in particular whether the S-matrices of the untwisted models factorize into a Yangian (the rational limit of the quantum-group deformation of ) and a -deformed untwisted R-matrix while those of the twisted models factorize into a Yangian and a -deformed twisted R-matrix, both limiting to the same rational R-matrix as the deformation is removed.
The three components jointly characterise the class of models: the classification fixes which inequivalent models (if any) exist for each twisting and hence for which models the Hamiltonian and quantum analyses must be carried out, while the Hamiltonian structure is the classical prerequisite for the symmetry identification and S-matrix construction. The construction of further classes of models (order-defect twistings, coupled models, twisted coset models, doubly-deformed models) is a separate construction programme and is not part of the completion boundary.
