Baxter's homogeneous relation solves the spectrum of the periodic spin- XYZ chain (the quantum side of the eight-vertex model) for an even number of sites , at the price of an integer parameter and a sum rule on the Bethe roots whose consistency was never proven. Xin Zhang (arXiv:2404.12615, 2024) supplied extensive numerical evidence for a bundle of hypotheses: equals the sum-rule integer ; the homogeneous relation together with its elliptic Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) and the sum rule is complete for the spectra of the Hamiltonian and transfer matrix; physical singular (bound-pair) solutions are exhausted by explicit counts; determinant scalar products survive at generic (non-root-of-unity) anisotropy as the limit of the root-of-unity formulas; and a homogeneous relation exists also in the regime where the sum rule disappears, while for odd the spectrum's inhomogeneous relation still lacks a Bethe vector. No proof or refutation of any of these hypotheses is known. Adjacent results leave precisely the generic-parameter analytic core open, so the problem is to replace each numerically supported hypothesis by a rigorous statement or an explicit counterexample.
Background
The spin- XYZ chain is the maximally anisotropic Heisenberg chain: spin- sites with distinct exchange couplings and periodic boundary conditions. Unlike the XXX and XXZ chains it has no magnetization symmetry (no conserved total magnetization), so there is no pseudo-vacuum, i.e. no simple reference state on which creation operators could act, and the standard algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA), the exact-solution method that builds eigenstates by applying creation operators to such a reference state, is unavailable. Integrability comes instead from Baxter's eight-vertex (8V) model, a two-dimensional lattice model of arrows on edges whose eight allowed vertex configurations carry four Boltzmann weights: the chain Hamiltonian commutes with a transfer matrix built from the elliptic -matrix (a matrix of Boltzmann weights solving the Yang-Baxter equation, whose entries are Jacobi theta functions with quasi-periods and and crossing parameter ).
For even , Baxter showed that every eigenvalue of can be written as a homogeneous relation (a functional equation expressing through an auxiliary theta-function ratio ),
with and an integer . Requiring to be entire fixes the Bethe roots (the quasi-particle momenta of the eigenstate) through elliptic Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs), and the roots additionally obey the sum rule with integers . Two analytic inputs have never been rigorously established. First, the value of : solving the BAEs numerically requires guessing it. Second, completeness: whether BAE solutions, together with so-called singular solutions in which two roots sit at the poles of the relation (where the naive Bethe vector vanishes and must be rescaled), account for all eigenvalues. Baxter's own completeness paper on the six- and eight-vertex models is regarded by later experts as presenting evidence rather than a proof for the periodic XYZ case at generic .
Bethe vectors exist only as infinite series in the generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz (GABA, where creation operators act on a factorized, parameter-dependent reference state) with unproven convergence; at roots of unity the series truncate (a regime with rich but special algebraic structure studied by Fabricius and McCoy), and there Slavnov, Zabrodin and Zotov proved determinant formulas for scalar products (inner products of Bethe vectors, the raw material of correlation functions), Zhang, Klümper and Popkov constructed explicit chiral bases and a coordinate Bethe ansatz in invariant subspaces, and Kulkarni and Slavnov computed the monodromy-matrix actions, obtaining explicit scalar products only in the free-fermion limit. For odd no homogeneous relation exists: the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA, which builds functional relations from operator identities rather than a reference state) gives the spectrum through an inhomogeneous relation with two -functions, but no Bethe vector; Niccoli and Terras instead constructed all odd- eigenstates rigorously by separation of variables (SoV, a method that diagonalizes the transfer matrix by factorizing the spectral problem into independent coordinate and momentum equations) after mapping the model to an antiperiodic dynamical six-vertex model, although the reformulation of their construction through Bethe-type equations is proven only for even . In the trigonometric () XXZ limit, phantom Bethe roots (equispaced strings at infinite momentum that leave the relation invariant, introduced by Popkov, Zhang and Klümper) link to the XXZ root structure. Against this background, Xin Zhang performed exact-diagonalization comparisons for Hermitian and non-Hermitian parameters up to and proposed the hypotheses whose rigorous confirmation is the present problem.
Problem Statement
Replace the numerically supported hypotheses of arXiv:2404.12615 about Baxter's homogeneous relation for the generic (non-root-of-unity) periodic spin- XYZ chain by rigorous analytic statements. The single overarching objective is a rigorous /Bethe-ansatz description of the generic periodic XYZ chain, realized only when all six of the following independently refutable sub-problems are resolved; each sub-problem stands on its own, so resolving any one of them (by proof, refutation, or an explicit generic-parameter counterexample) is a resolution of that sub-problem and partial progress on the objective: (1) prove or refute that the integer entering the relation and the Bethe vector equals the sum-rule integer for all generic even- chains, so that the unknowns are determined by the BAEs plus the sum rule , and establish the resulting convergence of the infinite-series GABA Bethe vector; (2) prove or refute completeness, i.e. that the homogeneous relation with roots, its BAEs and the sum rule reproduce all eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian and transfer matrix; (3) classify all physical singular solutions of the BAEs (bound pairs with correctly rescaled, non-vanishing Bethe vectors), prove their counts (numerically 1, 4, 11 for ); (4) extend the determinant scalar-product formulas from the root-of-unity case to generic anisotropy via the limit, or establish exactly where this limit fails; (5) settle the regime with , in which a homogeneous relation with roots exists but the sum rule disappears: determine completeness and the analogue of there; and (6) construct the Bethe vector for the odd- periodic chain whose spectrum is given by the inhomogeneous relation, in the Bethe-type sense with proven completeness, going beyond the existing SoV eigenstate characterization whose Bethe-equation reformulation is proven only for even . An explicit generic-parameter counterexample refuting any hypothesis is an equally valid resolution of that item. The source additionally lists fast and reliable numerical methods for the elliptic BAEs at large as an explicitly auxiliary goal that would facilitate exploration but does not define completion.
