The open string in that ends on the lateral D3-brane describing the Coulomb branch of planar super-Yang-Mills is the holographic dual of a massive -boson. Demjaha and Zarembo recently proved this open string to be classically integrable by constructing a reflection matrix that depends on both the spectral parameter and the dynamical position of the string endpoint, and inserting it into a Sklyanin double-row transfer matrix, which generates an infinite commuting hierarchy of conserved charges. Whether this integrable structure survives quantization is open. The problem is to establish, or refute, the quantum integrable structure of the Coulomb-branch open string: a quantum reflection factor satisfying the reflection equation with the quantum worldsheet S-matrix and reducing to the classical one, an anomaly-free tower of quantum conserved charges, factorized quantum scattering at the boundary, and consistent quantized fermionic boundary conditions. Existing evidence is indirect, from a boundary-state bootstrap that assumes the integrability and passes tree-level and one-loop tests.
Background
In super-Yang-Mills theory, the maximally supersymmetric conformal gauge theory in four dimensions, the Coulomb branch is the moduli space of vacua on which the six adjoint scalars acquire expectation values, breaking the gauge symmetry and giving mass to the off-diagonal gauge bosons, the -bosons. Through the AdS/CFT correspondence — the duality between planar super-Yang-Mills and type IIB string theory on the spacetime — a massive -boson is a fundamental open string ending on a D3-brane (a solitonic extended object of string theory) embedded in the Anti-de-Sitter bulk: the brane sits at fixed radial position , and the string endpoint is free to slide along it, so the worldsheet fields obey Neumann conditions along the brane directions and a Dirichlet condition in . Demjaha and Zarembo call this a lateral D3-brane; its string fluctuations are dual to meson-like bound states of the with adjoint matter, and explicit classical solutions (spinning strings and hydrogen-like Coulombic bound states) are known essentially only numerically (Kruczenski-Mateos-Myers-Winters 2003; Herzog-Stricker-Vuorinen 2008).
Integrability — the presence of an infinite tower of commuting conserved charges — is the organizing principle behind exact results for planar SYM. Classically the superstring in the Green-Schwarz formulation (the one with manifest target-space supersymmetry, whose fermions are subject to the local -symmetry gauge freedom) is integrable as a sigma model on the supercoset — the superspace whose bosonic body is — and quantum mechanically this underlies the exact worldsheet S-matrix (the two-body scattering matrix of the elementary worldsheet excitations), the asymptotic Bethe ansatz (algebraic equations for the large-volume energy spectrum), and the quantum spectral curve (an all-coupling integral-equation reformulation of the spectral problem). For open strings, boundary integrability was formalized by Sklyanin: the monodromy matrix (the ordered line integral, along the spatial extent of the string, of the worldsheet Lax connection — the flat connection whose conserved currents generate the charges) of the half-plane worldsheet is reflected at the boundary by a reflection matrix, and the trace of the resulting double-row transfer matrix commutes with itself in the spectral parameter (the auxiliary complex variable of the inverse-scattering construction), thereby generating conserved charges. In two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory with a boundary, the bootstrap of Ghoshal and Zamolodchikov fixes the boundary S-matrix, or reflection factor, through boundary unitarity, boundary crossing, and the reflection equation (the boundary Yang-Baxter equation) with the bulk S-matrix.
Integrability of open strings ending on D-branes is exceptional. The boundary conditions preserving it for the string were classified by Dekel and Oz in an analysis whose reflection matrices depend on the spectral parameter but not on the worldsheet fields, and the Coulomb-branch D3-brane does not appear in this classification; Demjaha and Zarembo note, moreover, that a close proxy of this brane actually breaks integrability (Ishii-Kitaku-Murata-Yoo 2024). Their result is that the Coulomb-branch brane is nevertheless classically integrable once the reflection matrix is allowed to be dynamical. In conformal gauge the and sectors decouple; the () sector with Dirichlet conditions has a known numeric reflection matrix, and the novel reflection matrix is , where is the spectral parameter, is the dynamical position of the string endpoint with , is the brane position, and are chiral projectors built from gamma matrices. Because is an operator — it depends on worldsheet fields evaluated at the endpoint — its insertion into the double-row transfer matrix requires care but succeeds: the resulting hierarchy of conserved charges is time-independent on the equations of motion, and the and matrices combine, with the fermions entering trivially at the classical level, into a block-diagonal supermatrix.
Classical integrability, however, does not imply quantum integrability. The open question, stated in the conclusions of Demjaha and Zarembo, is what the dynamical, spectral-parameter-dependent nature of the reflection factor implies for quantum integrability of the Coulomb branch. Quantization must fix the operator ordering inside , regularize on a half-plane a sigma model whose current algebra is non-ultralocal (it contains Schwinger terms — derivative-of-delta-function contributions to the current algebra — that obstruct naive canonical quantization), preserve -symmetry at the boundary, and ensure that the quantum charge algebra remains anomaly-free and that quantum worldsheet scattering still factorizes at the boundary. Indirect evidence is encouraging but incomplete: the boundary-state bootstrap of Coronado, Komatsu and Zarembo assumes Coulomb-branch integrability and passes tree-level and one-loop tests of one-point functions (expectation values of single-trace operators in the Higgsed vacuum), and Alday, Armanini, Häring and Zhiboedov, who compute Coulomb-branch scattering amplitudes, list integrability with D3-brane boundary conditions among the open directions.
Problem Statement
Determine whether the classically integrable open string with the Coulomb-branch (lateral D3-brane) boundary conditions in admits a consistent quantum integrable structure, and construct it or prove its absence. The joint objective comprises: (i) a quantum reflection factor for the sector — the quantization of the dynamical reflection matrix , where is the spectral parameter, the dynamical string-endpoint position with , the brane position, and the chiral projectors — with its operator ordering specified, satisfying the reflection equation together with the quantum worldsheet S-matrix and reducing to the classical matrix in the classical limit; (ii) an infinite family of quantum conserved charges, the quantized double-row transfer matrix, proven to commute and to be free of anomalies; (iii) the demonstration that quantum scattering of the massive worldsheet excitations factorizes at the boundary, or an explicit violation thereof; and (iv) consistency of the quantized fermionic boundary conditions, i.e. the absence of a boundary anomaly in the -symmetric Green-Schwarz formulation. An answer that instead exhibits a definite quantum obstruction — an anomalous term in the charge algebra, the reflection equation, or the boundary conditions that cannot be removed — resolves the problem in the negative and is admissible on the same footing. All deliverables serve the single objective of establishing whether, and how, Coulomb-branch integrability survives quantization: a full affirmative resolution requires all of (i)-(iv); a definite quantum obstruction in any single component — including an explicit violation of boundary factorization in (iii) — resolves the task in the negative; and a partial result at a definite loop order counts as progress on its component but does not by itself resolve the task.
