The nested algebraic Bethe ansatz (NBA) of Belliard and Ragoucy (2009) diagonalizes open spin chains based on the Yangian Y(gl(m|n)) or the quantum affine algebra U_q(gl(m|n)) with arbitrary finite-dimensional irreducible representations at each site and diagonal boundary matrices, but only when the boundary couple (K^-(u), K^+(u)) is a 'NABA couple', i.e. the diagonal matrix K^+(u) has at most one entry whose value differs from all the others (equivalently, the k^+-block of K^+(u) has size a_+ = 0 or a_+ = 1); the same paper formulates six interlinked issues for completing the framework: (1) an ansatz producing explicit eigenvectors for all diagonal K^+(u), including a_+ > 1, where the nesting fails and only the analytical Bethe ansatz (eigenvalues without eigenvectors) is available; (2) a proof of the conjecture that the supertrace formula for the Bethe vectors, established for NABA couples, holds for any diagonal boundary matrices; (3) coproduct properties of the open-chain Bethe vectors, needed for the quantized Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation; (4) scalar products and norms of these Bethe vectors, needed for correlation functions; (5) a current (Drinfeld-type) realization of the reflection algebra and of its Bethe vectors; and (6) an eigenvector-level treatment of non-diagonal boundary matrices beyond rank m+n = 2. None of the six issues below is resolved at this level of generality (universal transfer matrices, arbitrary rank). The problem is to complete the framework at that level.

Background

An integrable quantum spin chain in one dimension is a lattice model whose Hamiltonian belongs to a commuting family generated by a transfer matrix t(u). In the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA) one organizes the dynamics through the monodromy matrix T(u), a matrix whose entries are operators on the physical Hilbert space and whose components obey RLL commutation relations fixed by an R-matrix solving the Yang-Baxter equation; the transfer matrix built from T(u) then forms the commuting family. For chains based on the Yangian Y(gl(m|n)) - the symmetry algebra producing rational R-matrices - or on its q-deformed analogue, the quantum affine algebra U_q(gl(m|n)) (trigonometric R-matrices), the superalgebra case gl(m|n) carries a Z_2 grading in which bosonic and fermionic entries appear, and ordinary traces are replaced by graded traces (supertraces). When the rank m+n exceeds 2 the ABA must be nested (NBA): the creation operators of one step become part of a smaller auxiliary monodromy matrix, and diagonalization proceeds recursively through m+n-1 nesting levels, producing Bethe equations, eigenvalues, and explicit Bethe vectors (eigenvectors parametrized by Bethe roots; 'off-shell' Bethe vectors are the same expressions with arbitrary auxiliary parameters).

Open (non-periodic) chains are built with the reflection-algebra formalism introduced by Sklyanin: one introduces two boundary (reflection) matrices K^-(u) and K^+(u) satisfying the reflection equation (a quadratic relation, analogous to the Yang-Baxter equation, that makes the boundary compatible with the R-matrix), and the double-row transfer matrix constructed from the monodromy matrix, its reflected copy and the two K-matrices commutes for all u. For diagonal K-matrices the usual pseudo-vacuum (all sites in a reference state) remains an eigenvector of the diagonal part of the double monodromy, so a nested ABA can be attempted. Belliard and Ragoucy (2009) carried this out uniformly for 'universal transfer matrices' - open chains based on Y(gl(m|n)) and U_q(gl(m|n)) with arbitrary irreducible representations at each site - for a completely general diagonal K^-(u) but a restricted diagonal K^+(u) of the form K^+(u) = diag(k^+(u),...,k^+(u), k-bar^+(u),...,k-bar^+(u)) with a_+ entries equal to k^+(u). Their nesting goes through only for a_+ = 0 or a_+ = 1, a pair (K^-(u), K^+(u)) they call a NABA couple; for a_+ > 1 the commutation relations between the nested creation operators and the boundary term lose the form on which the wanted/unwanted-term cancellation rests, and only the analytical Bethe ansatz - an argument from analyticity and asymptotics that yields eigenvalues and Bethe equations without constructing eigenvectors - remains available. They also prove a supertrace formula expressing each Bethe vector as a graded trace over the auxiliary spaces of products of nested diagonal monodromy elements; the formula is independent of K^+(u), and they conjecture it remains valid for any diagonal boundary matrices.

For closed (periodic) chains the corresponding structure theory is now essentially complete: the off-shell Bethe vectors admit a realization in terms of the current (Drinfeld) generators of the Yangian double - generating series replacing the RLL matrix entries - together with coproduct factorization properties, action formulas, and determinant representations for scalar products and norms (see e.g. the current presentation for the double super-Yangian of gl(m|n) and its Bethe vectors by Hutsalyuk, Liashyk, Pakuliak, Ragoucy and Slavnov). These components jointly underpin the solution theory of the quantized Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov (qKZ) equation - a difference equation whose solutions are built from Bethe vectors, as in Tarasov and Varchenko's construction - and the computation of correlation functions. For open chains at general rank every one of these components is missing, and Belliard and Ragoucy's conclusion lists exactly the gaps: extend the NBA beyond NABA couples; prove the supertrace formula for all diagonal boundaries; establish the coproduct properties needed for the boundary qKZ program; compute scalar products and norms; find a current realization of the reflection algebra and its Bethe vectors; and, as a further frontier, treat non-diagonal boundary matrices beyond rank m+n = 2, where in 2009 only the q-Onsager-algebra approach of Baseilhac and Koizumi and the functional T-Q relations for the XXZ chain were available.

Problem Statement

At the generality of the source framework - universal transfer matrices of open spin chains based on Y(gl(m∣n))Y(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)) and Uq(gl(m∣n))U_q(\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)) with arbitrary finite-dimensional irreducible representations at each site - complete the Bethe-vector framework beyond NABA couples:

  1. Construct explicit Bethe vectors (an eigenvector-level nested algebraic Bethe ansatz, or an equivalent explicit algebraic construction) for arbitrary diagonal boundary matrices, in particular for diagonal K+(u)K^+(u) with a+≥2a_+ \geq 2 (a+a_+ denoting the number of diagonal entries of K+(u)K^+(u) whose value is k+(u)k^+(u), the remaining m+n−a+m+n-a_+ entries taking kˉ+(u)\bar{k}^+(u)), where the 2009 nesting fails and only the analytical Bethe ansatz is available.
  2. Prove (or refute) the conjecture that the supertrace formula for the Bethe vectors, established for NABA couples, is valid for any diagonal boundary matrices K±(u)K^\pm(u).
  3. Establish the coproduct (composite-model factorization) properties of these open-chain Bethe vectors, sufficient to construct solutions of the quantized Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation for open chains at general rank.
  4. Compute the scalar products and norms of these Bethe vectors - for example in determinant form - for m+n≥3m+n \geq 3, beyond the rank-one results already available.
  5. Construct a current (Drinfeld-type) realization of the reflection algebra and of its Bethe vectors, analogous to the current realization of Bethe vectors for periodic chains.
  6. As the boundary frontier of the same program: give an eigenvector-level solution for open chains with general non-diagonal boundary matrices at m+n>2m+n > 2, where only eigenvalue-level results (nested off-diagonal Bethe ansatz, separation of variables) and special classes (triangular, projected, symmetric-pair, rank one) are currently known.

The common objective is to bring the open-chain diagonal-boundary Bethe ansatz to the same level of completeness as the closed-chain program: items 1-5 are precisely the components that exist for closed chains and there jointly underpin correlation functions and quantized-Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov applications, and item 6 extends the explicit construction beyond diagonal boundaries. Each of the six items is an open problem in its own right, and a complete solution of any single one of them - covering all of that item's sub-parts, and supplying the open-chain Bethe vectors of item 1 where a later item presupposes them - resolves this task; every item left incomplete or unattempted must be declared as unaddressed. An answer that holds only at rank m+n=2m+n = 2, only for fundamental representations, or only at the eigenvalue level, or that settles only part of a single item, resolves neither that item nor the task and must say so.
