For the higher-spin stochastic six-vertex model (R-matrices of in symmetric tensor representations), Mangazeev and Lu (2019) solved the reflection equation for arbitrary positive integer spin weight J, obtaining the general non-diagonal boundary K-matrix: its elements depend on the spectral parameter and two free parameters (nu, t) and are given by an explicit double-sum formula obtained from a terminating balanced 4φ3 generating function. They posed a bundle of structural questions about this object: whether the double sum can be rewritten as a single basic-hypergeometric sum; whether the matrix elements admit a positive (probabilistic) regime for all J; whether a q-oscillator matrix-product construction reproducing the full two-parameter family exists and extends to higher rank; and whether the construction extends to non-integer spin weights, where crossing-unitarity fails. The questions below are the open issues stated in the primary source. One further conjecture from the same paper, the 4th-degree Phi-function identity behind the degenerate reflection equation, has since been proven by Kolyaskin and Mangazeev (2024) via the star-star relation. The four remaining questions, all about the same K-matrix, remain open; none of a single-sum form, a positivity theorem for the general family, a two-parameter matrix-product realization, or a non-integer-weight extension is known.
Background
The six-vertex model assigns Boltzmann weights to the vertices of a square lattice under an ice-type conservation rule (the number of arrows entering each vertex equals the number leaving). Its higher-spin (higher-weight) generalization allows each edge to carry 0,1,...,I arrows, and is equivalent to evaluating the quantum-group R-matrix of the affine algebra in the symmetric tensor representation of weight (a vector space of dimension , corresponding to spin ). After a gauge transformation these weights satisfy a stochasticity (column-sum) rule, so the same object defines a discrete-time Markov chain of exclusion type - the higher-spin stochastic six-vertex model, a relative of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class - whose systematic stochastic interpretation was given by Kuniba, Mangazeev, Maruyama and Okado. The R-matrix elements are built from a function - a closed product of -Pochhammer symbols and -binomial coefficients - summed over internal indices fixed by the conservation law.
To put an integrable lattice model on an interval with open ends one uses Sklyanin's extension of the quantum inverse scattering method, which requires, besides an R-matrix satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation (the cubic consistency relation that makes row-to-row transfer matrices commute), a boundary K-matrix solving the reflection equation
together with a 'dual' reflection equation built on a crossed R-matrix. For weight the general non-diagonal solution with four complex parameters has been known since de Vega and Gonzalez Ruiz; imposing the stochasticity condition selects the branch relevant for Markov chains coupled to reservoirs, parametrized by , and .
Mangazeev and Lu (2019) solved the reflection equation for the higher-spin R-matrix at arbitrary positive integer weight . Writing the matrix elements through coefficients () that depend on the spectral parameter and two free parameters (with , in terms of the two parameters of the spin-1/2 boundary solution), they reduced the problem to a pair of linear recurrence relations in the indices (their eqs. (6.5)-(6.6)), solved the difference equations for a generating function in terms of a terminating balanced series, and expanded the result into an explicit double-sum formula for , and hence for (their eq. (7.24)). In the lower- and upper-triangular cases ( or ) the elements collapse to single -functions, i.e. closed products of -Pochhammer symbols and -binomial coefficients; in the generic case the double sum is the most compact known form. The derivation rests on integer weights: crossing symmetry (and crossing unitarity) of the higher-spin R-matrix, needed for the dual reflection equation, is established only for integer weights, and a numerical check in the source shows that crossing unitarity fails for generic complex weights.
A parallel line, often called 3D integrability, constructs K-matrices as matrix products of local operators acting in an auxiliary -oscillator algebra (a -deformed bosonic Fock space whose creation and annihilation operators obey -commutation relations), tied to solutions of tetrahedron-type equations (the three-dimensional analogues of the Yang-Baxter equation). Kuniba, Pasquier and Kuniba, Okado, Yoneyama obtained such matrix-product solutions associated with coideal subalgebras (subalgebras stable under the coproduct); however, their solutions depend essentially only on the spectral parameter, with no analogue of the pair . The absence of a -oscillator construction reproducing the two-parameter family, the lack of a single-sum closed form, the unproven positivity of the general matrix elements, and the obstruction at non-integer weights are the subject of the problem below.
Problem Statement
All four questions below concern one object: the general non-diagonal boundary K-matrix of the higher-spin stochastic six-vertex model found by Mangazeev and Lu - the solution of the reflection equation for the higher-spin R-matrix at arbitrary positive integer weight , whose matrix elements are expressed through coefficients () depending on the spectral parameter and two free parameters and , and are given explicitly by the double-sum formula (7.24) of the cited paper (an expansion of a terminating balanced generating function; in the triangular cases or the elements reduce to single -functions, i.e. closed products of -Pochhammer symbols and -binomial coefficients). The common objective is to complete the structural theory of this specific K-matrix. Determine, with proof:
(a) Compact form. Can the double-sum expression for , and hence the matrix elements of , be rewritten as a single basic hypergeometric sum for general and generic values of the parameters?
(b) Positivity. For every positive integer , does there exist an explicit regime of the parameters (, , ; e.g. with suitable real ranges) in which all matrix elements of the general two-parameter are non-negative, so that in the stochastic normalization they define legitimate boundary transition probabilities? This is known for and expected for all on fusion grounds (the fusion procedure builds higher-weight K-matrices by projecting tensor products of fundamental ones), but has not been proved for the general family.
(c) Matrix-product (3D) realization. Find an explicit matrix product of local operators acting in an auxiliary -oscillator algebra that solves the defining recurrence relations (6.5)-(6.6) of Mangazeev and Lu with arbitrary and and is equivalent to the double-sum formula (7.24); and determine whether this construction extends to higher rank, i.e. to general (non-triangular) stochastic K-matrices of with one extra parameter beyond the spectral one. Known matrix-product constructions cover only the one-parameter (spectral) case and, at higher rank, only triangular solutions.
(d) Non-integer weights. Determine whether the K-matrix construction admits a meaningful extension to non-integer (complex) spin weights . The recurrence relations and their solutions are well defined for complex (the triangular solutions of the cited paper already are), but crossing symmetry and crossing-unitarity of the higher-spin R-matrix are established only for integer weights and fail generically for complex weights, so the dual-reflection route underlying the construction of the general family is not available there; the source expects that the solution of the reduced system does not satisfy the full reflection equation for complex weights, and leaves this negative expectation unproved. Determine whether the general two-parameter nevertheless solves the reflection equation at non-integer weights (or prove that it cannot).
Each facet is settled either affirmatively (explicit formula, regime, construction, or extension, with proof) or negatively (proof of impossibility or of failure: for facet (b) a proof that for some fixed no regime of the parameters yields all non-negative matrix elements, and for facet (d) an explicit non-integer weight at which the reflection equation provably fails). The problem as a whole is completed when all four facets are settled for the general two-parameter family, without restriction to triangular specializations, fixed small , or particular answer forms; facet (c) is complete only when both the two-parameter realization and the higher-rank extension are settled.
