The rational QQ-system encodes the physicality of Bethe-ansatz solutions of the spin-ss XXX Heisenberg chain as polynomiality of a grid of Baxter QQ-functions. He, Hou, Liu and Tan (SciPost Phys. Core 8, 057 (2025)) extended this framework to twisted and open spin-ss chains, proved polynomiality equivalences for the twisted case, and confirmed completeness numerically for both boundary types; they also discovered that at positive integer k=α−βk=\alpha-\beta the open-chain solution space degenerates, exhibiting boundary-induced strings (exact string configurations whose length and positions are fixed by the boundary magnetic fields), a QQ-function ambiguity Q→Q+const⋅P′Q\to Q+\mathrm{const}\cdot P', where P′P' is a polynomial built from the second solution of the transfer-matrix–QQ (TQTQ) relation, and splitting of solution families. The open problem is the analytic theory of this degenerate solution space: necessary and sufficient conditions for the appearance and stability of boundary-induced strings; a classification of the QQ-function ambiguity with criteria fixing a unique physical QQ-polynomial; an analytic account of the splitting phenomena; and a rigorous completeness proof for the twisted and open spin-ss chains.

Background

The Heisenberg XXX spin chain of length LL and spin ss is a canonical exactly solved quantum system: its Hamiltonian commutes with a family of commuting transfer matrices, and the algebraic Bethe ansatz converts the spectral problem into a set of algebraic equations — the Bethe ansatz equations (BAE) — for complex rapidities called Bethe roots; the magnon number MM (the number of spin flips relative to the fully polarized reference state) labels the subspaces of the Hilbert space. For s>12s>\tfrac12 the BAE admit many unphysical solutions: solutions with repeated roots or with singular roots (roots coinciding with poles of the equations) generically do not correspond to eigenstates, so deciding which solutions are physical — and whether the ansatz is complete, i.e. yields exactly one solution per eigenstate of the full Hilbert space — is a long-standing problem. The rational QQ-system is a recent constructive answer: Baxter QQ-functions (polynomials whose zeros encode Bethe roots) are placed on a Young-tableaux-shaped grid and related by QQQQ-relations, Wronskian-type functional equations at shifted arguments, and the requirement that every QQ-function on the grid be a polynomial selects exactly the physical solutions. For the periodic spin-ss chain, Hou, Jiang and Zhu (2024) proved the equivalence between this QQ-system and polynomiality of both solutions of the transfer-matrix–QQ (TQTQ) relation and established completeness rigorously; for rational gl(m∣n)\mathfrak{gl}(m|n) chains in the defining representation, completeness of Wronskian Bethe equations is a theorem of Chernyak, Leurent and Volin (2022).

He, Hou, Liu and Tan (2025) extended the rational QQ-system to the spin-ss XXX chain with a diagonal twist (twist angle θ\theta) and with open boundaries. Open boundaries are implemented by Sklyanin's construction of a double-row transfer matrix built from the RR-matrix (the rational solution of the Yang–Baxter equation underlying the chain's integrability) and two diagonal boundary KK-matrices, i.e. boundary magnetic fields parameterized by α\alpha and β\beta. For the twisted chain they proved, by residue-type arguments and under stated regularity assumptions, that polynomiality of the PP-function (the twisted-case analogue of the second solution of the TQTQ-relation, defined through a modified Wronskian relation) is equivalent to polynomiality of the whole QQ-system, and derived physical conditions for singular solutions; for both boundary types, completeness of the QQ-system was confirmed numerically but not proven (the periodic proof, which rests on polynomiality of both solutions of the TQTQ-relation, does not carry over: the twisted equivalence is proved only under auxiliary assumptions, and the open chain is governed by a different Wronskian relation). In the open chain they found that when α−β=k∈Z+\alpha-\beta=k\in\mathbb{Z}_+: (i) some physical solutions contain boundary-induced strings — exact, non-deviating string configurations at the roots ±i(α−12),±i(α−32),…,±i(α−2k−12)\pm i(\alpha-\tfrac12), \pm i(\alpha-\tfrac32), \ldots, \pm i(\alpha-\tfrac{2k-1}{2}) — which appear or disappear as indivisible units whose length is fixed by kk; (ii) hidden symmetry charges commute with the Hamiltonian within fixed-MM subspaces, producing extra degeneracies organized between primary states and their descendants (eigenstates related by these subspace-specific generators) across the equator M=sL+12(α−β)M=sL+\tfrac12(\alpha-\beta), generalizing the α−β=1\alpha-\beta=1 case known from spectrum-preserving deformations of open chains (Jiang and Miao 2024); (iii) beyond the equator, the second-order difference equation (the open-chain Wronskian relation) for QQ degenerates: defining P′(u)=P(u)∏j=0k−1(u+i(β+12+j))(u−i(β+12+j))P'(u)=P(u)\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}\left(u+i(\beta+\tfrac12+j)\right)\left(u-i(\beta+\tfrac12+j)\right), so that deg⁡P′=deg⁡P+2k\deg P'=\deg P+2k and deg⁡P′<deg⁡Q\deg P'<\deg Q precisely beyond the equator, whenever QQ is a solution so is Q+const⋅P′Q+\mathrm{const}\cdot P' — so the QQ-system does not have a unique solution, an ambiguity observed numerically in their solution tables; and (iv) solution families split: for β=0\beta=0 and M=8M=8, four solutions at M=1M=1 bifurcate into three Q+const⋅P′Q+\mathrm{const}\cdot P' solutions plus one solution with roots at infinity, with the total solution count preserved. The authors deferred a detailed explanation of the ambiguity and splitting to subsequent works (none has appeared) and posed the origin and analytic conditions of boundary-induced strings as a key open question.

Problem Statement

Construct the analytic theory of the rational-QQ-system solution space for the open spin-ss XXX chain (diagonal boundary parameters α\alpha, β\beta; length LL; spin ss; magnon number MM; conventions of arXiv:2502.15636), together with the rigorous completeness statement for twisted and open boundaries. Four components are jointly required and together constitute the objective — a complete, rigorous characterization of the physical solution space in terms of the QQ-system — and each must be settled by a rigorous analytical derivation, not by numerical or qualitative evidence alone:

(1) Boundary-induced strings: prove necessary and sufficient conditions on α,β,L,s,M\alpha,\beta,L,s,M under which physical Bethe solutions contain the boundary-induced string roots ±i(α−12),±i(α−32),…,±i(α−2k−12)\pm i(\alpha-\tfrac12), \pm i(\alpha-\tfrac32), \ldots, \pm i(\alpha-\tfrac{2k-1}{2}) with k=α−β∈Z+k=\alpha-\beta\in\mathbb{Z}_+, and explain their origin and their stability as indivisible units in the spectrum.

(2) QQ-function ambiguity: classify analytically the degeneracy of the QQ-system at k=α−β∈Z+k=\alpha-\beta\in\mathbb{Z}_+ — determine the structure and multiplicity of the non-uniqueness Q→Q+const⋅P′Q\to Q+\mathrm{const}\cdot P' (with P′(u)=P(u)∏j=0k−1(u+i(β+12+j))(u−i(β+12+j))P'(u)=P(u)\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}\left(u+i(\beta+\tfrac12+j)\right)\left(u-i(\beta+\tfrac12+j)\right), k=α−βk=\alpha-\beta, arising when deg⁡P′<deg⁡Q\deg P'<\deg Q, i.e. M>sL+12(α−β)M>sL+\tfrac12(\alpha-\beta)) — and exhibit criteria, such as selection rules, regularity conditions, or additional conserved quantities, under which the QQ-system supplemented with these criteria yields a unique physical QQ-polynomial in all cases.

(3) Splitting: give a concrete analytic account of the observed splitting of solution families, specifying how, at fixed boundary parameters in the degenerate sector (e.g. β=0\beta=0, k=α−β∈Z+k=\alpha-\beta\in\mathbb{Z}_+), the solutions of a magnon sector below the equator M=sL+12(α−β)M=sL+\tfrac12(\alpha-\beta) (e.g. M=1M=1) map onto the solutions of the sector reflected across the equator (e.g. M=8M=8), with the solutions containing boundary-induced strings corresponding to solutions with roots at infinity and the remaining ones to the Q+const⋅P′Q+\mathrm{const}\cdot P' branches, and with the total solution count preserved.

(4) Rigorous completeness: prove — or disprove and repair — that the rational QQ-system produces all and only physical solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for the twisted and open spin-ss XXX chains, removing the auxiliary assumptions used in the polynomiality-equivalence arguments (the assumption that the twist excludes repeated roots; degenerate parameter values; arbitrary repeated-root multiplicities).
