The sine-Gordon model is the only integrable quantum field theory with non-diagonal scattering for which exact finite-volume expectation values of local operators in arbitrary Hamiltonian eigenstates are known. In the fermionic basis of operators these expectation values reduce to determinants of a single matrix whose entries solve linear integral equations whose kernel is built from the counting-function nonlinear integral equation (NLIE) — a spectral description specific to sine-Gordon/massive-Thirring. Hegedűs (JHEP 01 (2020) 122), who derived this excited-state extension, explicitly proposed as an open problem to reformulate the construction in the language of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) pseudo-energies — the finite-volume spectral framework available for any non-diagonally scattering theory — expecting this to expose the structure of the formulas and to help in finding a generalization of the exact determinant-type expectation-value machinery to other integrable quantum field theories with non-diagonal scattering. No resolution is known in the literature: the author's own 2021-2026 follow-ups remain within sine-Gordon and the NLIE framework; the Adler-Boos continuation of the fermionic-basis program stays within the 6-vertex/XXZ family; and alternative approaches (Lüscher-order form-factor expansions, nested LeClair-Mussardo series, functional-equation g-functions) deliver asymptotic series or neighboring observables rather than exact eigenstate expectation values for non-diagonal theories. The problem is open, with a precise core: the TBA pseudo-energy reformulation of the state-dependent omega-kernel systems and the determination of which operator classes admit absolute determinant-type expectation values generically — the reformulation being, in the source's own hedged framing, what 'could give a deeper insight into the structure of the formulas and help in finding a generalization to other important models' with non-diagonal scattering.
Background
A large class of two-dimensional integrable quantum field theories is solved at infinite volume by a factorized scattering matrix: multiparticle scattering factorizes into two-body amplitudes depending only on differences of the rapidity , the standard logarithmic parametrization of two-dimensional relativistic momenta. When every two-body amplitude is a scalar function times the identity, the scattering is called diagonal; otherwise it is non-diagonal, the canonical example being the sine-Gordon model (a scalar field with interaction ), whose soliton and antisoliton scatter into one another through a matrix-valued amplitude. Placing the theory on a circle of circumference (finite volume) quantizes the rapidities and converts infinite-volume data into exact finite-volume predictions. Two exact spectral descriptions exist: nonlinear integral equations (NLIEs) of Destri-de Vega type for a counting function, and the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA), in which pseudo-energies solve nonlinear integral equations with kernels built from the scattering matrix. The counting-function NLIE is special to sine-Gordon/massive-Thirring (with a few model-by-model exceptions), while TBA-type equations exist in principle for any factorized scattering theory.
The observables of interest here are expectation values of local operators in finite-volume eigenstates, i.e. diagonal matrix elements (one-point functions), together with their thermal and generalized-ensemble analogs, which are the building blocks of finite-volume and finite-temperature correlation functions. For diagonal scattering, the LeClair-Mussardo series and its excited-state extension express these values as spectral series built from infinite-volume form factors (matrix elements of local operators between asymptotic multiparticle states) and TBA filling fractions, and exact determinant-type formulas were subsequently established for the sinh-Gordon model. For non-diagonal scattering, series representations remained restricted to sine-Gordon, and the successful method was algebraic: on the light-cone lattice regularization of sine-Gordon/massive-Thirring whose local Boltzmann weights are those of the six-vertex, or ice-type, model, the space of local operators admits a fermionic basis (a basis built from free-fermion-like creation operators acting on primary fields, originating in the hidden Grassmann structure of that lattice model). Jimbo, Miwa and Smirnov showed that in this basis the ground-state expectation values of all exponential fields and their Virasoro descendants (fields obtained by acting with the generators of the conformal symmetry algebra) reduce to determinants of a single matrix , whose entries solve linear integral equations whose kernel is built from the counting function. Hegedűs extended this to expectation values in any eigenstate: the matrix becomes state-dependent through source terms encoding the sandwiching state, and the determinant formulas passed stringent tests — large-volume comparison with the conjectured LeClair-Mussardo-type series, semi-classical limits, and ultraviolet comparison with Liouville three-point functions.
The construction is nevertheless tied to sine-Gordon: the counting-function NLIE description of the finite-volume spectrum does not generalize, and the fermionic operator basis rests on the Grassmann structure of the six-vertex regularization. Hegedűs therefore stated as an open problem the rephrasing of these results in the language of TBA pseudo-energies, expecting this to expose the structural content of the formulas and to open the way to other important models with non-diagonal scattering (for example sigma models and theories with nested Bethe equations, the multi-step quantization conditions typical of higher-rank symmetries), where TBA is the only available exact spectral framework.
Problem Statement
Reformulate the exact finite-volume expectation-value construction of the sine-Gordon model in the language of TBA pseudo-energies — the open problem posed by Hegedűs (JHEP 01 (2020) 122) — with the aim of generalizing it to integrable quantum field theories with non-diagonal scattering. Concretely: (1) re-express the state-dependent -kernel linear integral systems — whose kernels are currently built from the sine-Gordon counting function — as integral equations written in terms of TBA pseudo-energies, so that the determinant expectation-value formulas become statements about TBA data available for any non-diagonal theory; (2) determine which operator classes of a general non-diagonal theory admit such determinant-type (or otherwise closed) expressions with absolute, normalized values rather than only ratios, and establish whether the determinant structure is generic or rests on the specific Grassmann/Clifford algebra of the six-vertex regularization. In the source, generalization to other important models with non-diagonal scattering is the hoped-for consequence motivating the reformulation ('could ... help in finding a generalization to other important models'), not an additional completion requirement: sub-part (2) in particular is to be answered structurally from the reformulation within sine-Gordon; an explicit realization of the resulting machinery in a theory beyond sine-Gordon would constitute major partial progress toward that hoped-for goal, while the posed open problem is the TBA pseudo-energy reformulation itself and the structural insight it enables.
