The fermionic (hidden Grassmann) basis of the critical XXZ spin-1/2 chain conjecturally reproduces, in the scaling limit, the chiral conformal field theory with central charge : the determinant formula for lattice partition functions with fermionic operators inserted is expected to give the three-point functions of Virasoro descendants between arbitrary asymptotic states. Boos, Jimbo, Miwa and Smirnov (Commun. Math. Phys. 299 (2010) 825) verified this only up to descendant level 6 in the diagonal case , blocked by the uncomputed large-parameter asymptotics of the structure function for . The problem asks for the completion of this program: the asymptotics, the all-levels proof of the determinant-to-three-point conjecture for generic asymptotic states (including and descendant asymptotic states), the systematic fermionic-bilinear-to-Virasoro change of basis, the lattice realization of the second Dotsenko-Fateev screening family, and the quasi-classical (finite-gap) interpretation of the kernel . Later work within the same program, through January 2026, has settled only low levels and the free-fermion point; the general case remains open.
Background
The XXZ spin- chain is the one-dimensional quantum spin chain with nearest-neighbour exchange anisotropy parametrised by a deformation parameter , (paper IV, eq. (2.2)). In this critical regime it is equivalent to the six-vertex model (the two-dimensional ice-type lattice model whose row-to-row transfer matrix is the chain's discrete time-evolution operator), and its scaling limit (lattice spacing tending to zero at fixed product , with a compactified 'Matsubara' direction of sites introduced by a finite transfer matrix) is a chiral conformal field theory (CFT, i.e. a two-dimensional quantum field theory whose local symmetry algebra is the Virasoro algebra of conformal transformations) with central charge , the minimal-model family. On the CFT side the primary fields carry conformal dimensions , and their spaces of descendants (Virasoro Verma modules, generated by the lowering generators ) admit a second description through the commuting local integrals of motion introduced by Zamolodchikov and studied systematically in CFT by Bazhanov, Lukyanov and Zamolodchikov.
The hidden Grassmann structure program (papers I-III of the series by Boos, Jimbo, Miwa, Smirnov and Takeyama) discovered that the space of quasi-local lattice operators carries fermionic creation operators , , — anticommuting operators analogous to free-fermion creation operators, built from the quantum-group structure of the chain ( being the q-deformation of the Lie algebra) — such that expectation values between eigenstates of the Matsubara transfer matrix reduce to an explicit determinant formula involving two transcendental functions and ; all dependence on boundary conditions and on the chosen state is concentrated in these two functions. In the scaling limit the inserted lattice operator becomes the chiral primary , and the states at the two ends of the cylinder become primaries and labelled by flux parameters , or more generally eigenvectors of the integrals of motion. The minimal models themselves are built by the Dotsenko-Fateev (Coulomb-gas, or free-field) construction, in which two complementary families of screening operators — contour integrals of the free boson — generate the required null structure; the lattice construction realizes one such family, arising from the singular coefficients , of the creation operators, whose condition on coincides with the Dotsenko-Fateev condition for one type of screening.
Paper IV states the central conjecture: the asymptotics, at large spectral parameters, of the scaled lattice determinant (the partition function with fermionic operators inserted) describes the three-point functions of descendants of between and . Verification proceeds level by level, by computing the large-parameter asymptotics of and (the scaling limits of and ) and matching them against the CFT predictions following from the conformal Ward identities. These asymptotics were obtained by Wiener-Hopf factorization (a standard technique for solving the intervening singular integral equations), which however could be carried through only in the diagonal case , where , and only modulo the integrals of motion. In that diagonal case the fermionic-bilinear-to-Virasoro matching was confirmed up to descendant level 6 with overdetermined consistency checks; at level 8 one change-of-basis coefficient remained undetermined until data from excited (particle-hole) states of the Matsubara transfer matrix were included. The construction of generic asymptotic states (eigenvectors of , including ), the all-levels proof, the lattice realization of the second screening family, and the quasi-classical interpretation of remain open. In the classical limit the integrals of motion degenerate to the classical KdV (Korteweg-de Vries) hierarchy of soliton equations, whose periodic finite-gap solutions correspond to hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces; only the genus-zero (constant) solutions are quantized by the present construction, and the authors expect the kernel to acquire a definite algebraic-geometric meaning there.
Problem Statement
Complete the lattice-to-CFT correspondence conjectured in Hidden Grassmann Structure in the XXZ Model IV. The common objective is to establish, rigorously and at every descendant level, that the scaling limit of the lattice determinant formula reproduces the chiral CFT three-point functions of descendants for generic asymptotic states, together with the structures this correspondence requires. Concretely:
(1) Compute the large- and large- asymptotic expansion of the scaled structure function in the generic non-diagonal case , where and the Wiener-Hopf factorization technique used for fails.
(2) Prove the paper-IV conjecture in full generality: for every descendant level, for all admissible — that is, parameters satisfying the Dotsenko-Fateev screening condition for an integer (paper IV, eq. (4.6)), from which one then continues analytically; this includes — and for asymptotic states that are themselves descendants (eigenvectors of the integrals of motion rather than only primary fields), the asymptotics of the scaled lattice determinant equals the CFT three-point function. As part of this, determine the complete change of basis between the fermionic bilinears and the Virasoro descendants at arbitrary level; it is currently fixed only up to level 8 modulo the integrals of motion (with particle-hole excitations) and up to level 4 with the integrals of motion acting non-trivially.
(3) Construct the second (complementary) Dotsenko-Fateev family of screening operators starting from the lattice model — the first family arises from the singular coefficients , of the fermionic creation operators — so that the full Coulomb-gas screening structure of the theory is realized on the lattice; only a continuum analog is known, itself conjectural and restricted to .
(4) In the quasi-classical limit , give the algebraic-geometric meaning of the kernel and extend the fermionic construction to asymptotic states corresponding to higher-genus (finite-gap) classical solutions of the KdV hierarchy, the periodic analogues of solitons, thereby quantizing these solutions within the fermionic formalism.
Historically, items (1) and (2) are linked: the asymptotics of item (1) was the obstruction that limited the original verification to the diagonal case; item (3) supplies the screening operators required for the correspondence to be compatible with the complete Dotsenko-Fateev free-field structure; item (4) is the classical-limit counterpart of the same construction. Item (1) is a required sub-result of item (2) rather than an independent deliverable: an all-levels proof of item (2) that explicitly produces the asymptotics of satisfies item (1) as well. Paper IV itself frames item (3) as the open question whether the second set of screening operators can be defined starting from the lattice model, and item (4) as an expectation left to future work. An answer is a proof of the conjecture in the stated generality together with the required constructions, where for item (3) or item (4) a rigorous proof that the second screening family cannot be defined from the lattice model, or that finite-gap quantization does not exist within the fermionic formalism, resolves that item in place of a construction; alternatively, a refutation exhibiting a specific descendant level and parameter set at which the scaling limit of the lattice determinant disagrees with the CFT three-point function resolves the conjecture of item (2) and thereby resolves the task as a negative answer, so that items (1), (3) and (4) and the change-of-basis determination within item (2) become moot and are not required.
