Bazhanov, Kotousov, Koval and Lukyanov (Nucl. Phys. B 965 (2021) 115337) analyzed the scaling limit of the critical Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-invariant inhomogeneous (staggered) six-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions and proposed that its continuum limit is a non-compact conformal field theory, describable as a gauged SL(2,R)\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R}) WZW model (the quantum Lorentzian black-hole nonlinear sigma model). The analytic backbone of this proposal is a conjectural instance of the ODE/IQFT correspondence: the properly normalized scaling limit of the eigenvalues of the lattice Baxter QQ-operators A±(ζ)\mathbb{A}_\pm(\zeta) on any low-energy Bethe state is required to coincide with the connection coefficients D±(μ)D_\pm(\mu) of a second-order differential equation carrying multiple apparent singularities whose positions are fixed by a nonlinear algebraic system, together with an operator-level version of this identity and a conjectured classification of the discrete part of the spectrum. Despite extensive numerical verification by the authors, a series of follow-up works generalizing the framework to Zr\mathbb{Z}_r symmetry (2023–2026), and rigorous proofs of the analogous correspondence in the homogeneous case (monster potentials of the quantum KdV model), all of these conjectures remain open; the most recent paper in the series (2025/2026) states explicitly that its conjectures were not proven. The problem is to prove or refute these conjectures for all low-energy states and all admissible parameter values.

Background

The six-vertex model is an exactly solvable two-dimensional lattice model of statistical mechanics whose local Boltzmann weights are parameterized by an anisotropy qq and a spectral parameter ζ\zeta; its row-to-row transfer matrix T(ζ)\mathbb{T}(\zeta) generates a commuting family of operators, which is what makes the model solvable by the Bethe ansatz. Baxter's 1971 generalized (inhomogeneous) six-vertex model allows the weights to carry site-dependent inhomogeneity parameters {ηJ}J=1N\{\eta_J\}_{J=1}^{N} while preserving this integrability. Besides T(ζ)\mathbb{T}(\zeta), the commuting family contains two Baxter QQ-operators A±(ζ)\mathbb{A}_\pm(\zeta): their eigenvalues A±(ζ)A_\pm(\zeta) are polynomials whose zeros {ζm}\{\zeta_m\} (the Bethe roots) satisfy a closed system of algebraic Bethe ansatz equations, from which the transfer-matrix spectrum is reconstructed. The present problem concerns the two-site periodic (staggered) choice ηJ=i(−1)J−1\eta_J={\rm i}(-1)^{J-1}, which endows the model with a global Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 symmetry, studied with twisted boundary conditions ω=eiπk\omega={\rm e}^{{\rm i}\pi{\tt k}} on a lattice of NN columns. The model is critical whenever qq and ω\omega are unimodular; for the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-invariant case two critical domains occur, and the source paper works in arg⁡(q2)∈(0,π)\arg(q^2)\in(0,\pi), parameterized as q=eiπ/(n+2)q={\rm e}^{{\rm i}\pi/(n+2)} with n>0n>0. Writing β2=2/(n+2)\beta^2=2/(n+2), so that n=2/β2−2n=2/\beta^2-2 and arg⁡(q2)=πβ2\arg(q^2)=\pi\beta^2, this is the domain 0<β2<10<\beta^2<1.

In the scaling limit one sends N→∞N\to\infty along sequences of Bethe states (renormalization-group, or RG, trajectories) that keep the scaled energy finite. The trajectories are characterized by RG invariants: the chiral parameters p,pˉp,\bar p (fixed by the spin SzS^z, the twist k{\tt k} and the winding number w{\tt w}), a parameter s=s ⁣ ⁣ ⁣lim⁡N→∞b(N)s=\mathrm{s}\!\!\!\lim_{N\to\infty} b(N) built from an eigenvalue of the quasi-shift operator (the lattice translation by two sites), and, at excitation level L\mathtt{L}, a non-ordered set w={wa}a=1L\bm w=\{w_a\}_{a=1}^{\mathtt{L}} constrained by a coupled nonlinear algebraic system. The ODE/IQFT (ordinary-differential-equation / integrable-quantum-field-theory) correspondence (Dorey–Tateo; Bazhanov–Lukyanov–Zamolodchikov) asserts, broadly, that scaling limits of QQ-operator eigenvalues of critical integrable lattice models coincide with spectral data of differential equations; for the homogeneous XXZ chain the scaled Bethe roots reproduce the spectrum of a quantum anharmonic oscillator. For the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-inhomogeneous model the proposed counterpart is the second-order equation

[−d2dz2+p2−14z2+2isz+1+∑a=1L(2(z−wa)2+nz(z−wa))+μ−2−nzn] Φ=0 ,\Bigg[-\frac{{\rm d}^2}{{\rm d}z^2}+\frac{p^2-\tfrac14}{z^2}+\frac{2{\rm i}s}{z}+1+\sum_{a=1}^{\mathtt{L}}\bigg(\frac{2}{(z-w_a)^2}+\frac{n}{z(z-w_a)}\bigg)+\mu^{-2-n}z^n\Bigg]\,\Phi=0\,,

which has a regular singularity at z=0z=0 with exponent pp, an irregular singularity at z=∞z=\infty of degree nn, a term carrying the continuous parameter ss, and L\mathtt{L} apparent singularities (regular points at which solutions can nevertheless pick up monodromy) at the positions waw_a. The connection coefficients D±(μ ∣ w,p,s)D_\pm(\mu\,|\,\bm w,p,s), defined as Wronskians between the two basis solutions with fixed z→0z\to0 asymptotics and a distinguished subdominant solution as z→+∞z\to+\infty, play the role of the continuum QQ-functions. The central conjecture (eq. (11.1) of the source) is the eigenvalue identity

s ⁣ ⁣ ⁣lim⁡N→∞b(N)→sG(N/2)(−μ2 ∣ 2n+2) A±(i (N/(2N0))−nn+2μ)=D±(μ ∣ w,p,s) ,\mathrm{s}\!\!\!\lim_{N\to\infty\atop b(N)\to s}G^{(N/2)}\big(-\mu^2\,\big|\,\tfrac{2}{n+2}\big)\,A_\pm\big({\rm i}\,\big(N/(2N_0)\big)^{-\frac{n}{n+2}}\mu\big)={D}_\pm(\mu\,|\,\bm w,p,s)\,,

where G(N)G^{(N)} is a state-independent normalizing factor ensuring the limit exists and N0N_0 is a known constant. Accepting (11.1), the limit becomes an operator identity (13.13): continuum operators a±(λ)\mathbf a_\pm(\lambda), constructed explicitly as traces over a qq-oscillator algebra of path-ordered exponentials of vertex operators in two-copy Heisenberg-algebra Fock spaces, should act diagonally on vectors ψp,s(w)\bm\psi_{p,s}(\bm w) with eigenvalues D±D_\pm. Beyond the identity itself, the source conjectures a complete spectral classification (sec. 10): every low-energy state flows either to the continuous sector (real limiting ss, forming the space H(cont)\mathcal H^{(\rm cont)}) or to the discrete sector H(disc)\mathcal H^{(\rm disc)} with s=±iqas=\pm{\rm i}\mathfrak q_a or ±iqˉa\pm{\rm i}\bar{\mathfrak q}_a, where qa=−p−12−a\mathfrak q_a=-p-\tfrac12-a and qˉa=−pˉ−12−a\bar{\mathfrak q}_a=-\bar p-\tfrac12-a with aa an integer in an explicitly bounded range, and the number of RG trajectories at level (L,Lˉ)(\mathtt{L},\bar{\mathtt{L}}) with a given limiting value is dSz+a(Lˉ) da(L)d_{S^z+a}(\bar{\mathtt{L}})\,d_a(\mathtt{L}) (resp. its barred version), where the integers da(L)d_a(\mathtt{L}) are defined by the generating function χa(q)=(q,q)∞−2∑m≥0(−1)mqma+m(m+1)/2=∑L≥0da(L) qL\chi_a({\tt q})=({\tt q},{\tt q})_\infty^{-2}\sum_{m\ge0}(-1)^m{\tt q}^{ma+m(m+1)/2}=\sum_{\mathtt{L}\ge0}d_a(\mathtt{L})\,{\tt q}^{\mathtt{L}}.

The physical stakes are the identity of the continuum limit. Ikhlef–Jacobsen–Saleur (2012) conjectured that the staggered Z2\mathbb{Z}_2 chain flows to the Euclidean black-hole sigma model SL(2,R)/U(1)\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})/U(1), the exact conformal field theory of Witten's two-dimensional black hole; its partition function indeed matches half of the lattice scaling-limit partition function. Bazhanov–Kotousov–Koval–Lukyanov rejected this identification on unitarity grounds (the Euclidean black hole is unitary, the lattice model is not) and proposed instead the Lorentzian black-hole nonlinear sigma model, a gauged SL(2,R)\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R}) Wess–Zumino–Witten (WZW) model — a two-dimensional conformal field theory built from group-valued fields with a topological coupling — with specific boundary and reality conditions, whose space of states carries an extended conformal algebra Wˉ∞⊗W∞\bar W_\infty\otimes W_\infty with central charge c<2c<2 and a continuous component in its spectrum of conformal dimensions. The source paper is explicit that this identification is tentative ('The local CFT, if it exists, ...') precisely because the correspondence (11.1)/(13.13) underlying it is unproven, resting on analytic continuation arguments, sum-rule checks at low orders, and extensive numerics. The source additionally records further unresolved issues: closed analytic forms for the non-universal norm constants C(β)C(\beta), C0(β)C_0(\beta) (introduced earlier for the homogeneous chain by Kotousov–Lukyanov) and C0(alt)C_0^{(\rm alt)}; the exceptional loci n=22k−1n=\tfrac{2}{2k-1} (equivalently β2=1−12k\beta^2=1-\tfrac1{2k}) where the continuum operators require renormalization; and the fact that the continuous and discrete sectors inherit two inequivalent conjugations from the lattice, so that whether they are sectors of one local quantum field theory remains unresolved.

Problem Statement

Prove or refute the conjectured ODE/IQFT correspondence formulated by Bazhanov–Kotousov–Koval–Lukyanov for the scaling limit of the critical Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-invariant inhomogeneous six-vertex model with twisted boundary conditions, in the parameter domain 0<β2<10<\beta^2<1 (i.e. q=eiπ/(n+2)q={\rm e}^{{\rm i}\pi/(n+2)} with arg⁡(q2)=πβ2∈(0,π)\arg(q^2)=\pi\beta^2\in(0,\pi), n=2/β2−2>0n=2/\beta^2-2>0) with generic twist k{\tt k} and spin sector Sz≥0S^z\ge0. The correspondence comprises three linked claims, to be established for every low-energy Bethe state (RG trajectory) characterized by the scaling data p,pˉ,s,w,wˉp,\bar p,s,\bm w,\bar{\bm w}:

(1) Eigenvalue identity (eq. (11.1) of the source). The normalized scaling limit

s ⁣ ⁣ ⁣lim⁡N→∞b(N)→sG(N/2)(−μ2 ∣ 2n+2) A±(i (N/(2N0))−nn+2μ)\mathrm{s}\!\!\!\lim_{N\to\infty\atop b(N)\to s}G^{(N/2)}\big(-\mu^2\,\big|\,\tfrac{2}{n+2}\big)\,A_\pm\big({\rm i}\,\big(N/(2N_0)\big)^{-\frac{n}{n+2}}\mu\big)

exists and equals the connection coefficient D±(μ ∣ w,p,s)D_\pm(\mu\,|\,\bm w,p,s) of the ODE (11.2) with the normalizations (11.3)–(11.5) of the source, for all levels L,Lˉ≥0\mathtt{L},\bar{\mathtt{L}}\ge0, all admissible ss, and all n>0n>0, including a consistent treatment of the exceptional loci n=22k−1n=\tfrac{2}{2k-1} where the normalizing factor is modified and the continuum operators require renormalization.

(2) Operator identity (eq. (13.13)). The continuum operators a±(λ)\mathbf a_\pm(\lambda), defined through the qq-oscillator traces of path-ordered vertex-operator exponentials over the Heisenberg Fock spaces (eqs. (13.9)–(13.10) of the source), admit eigenvectors ψp,s(w)\bm\psi_{p,s}(\bm w) with eigenvalues exactly equal to D±(μ ∣ w,p,s)D_\pm(\mu\,|\,\bm w,p,s) (with the λ\lambda–μ\mu relation (11.10) of the source), so that the lattice scaling limit realizes a diagonalizable commuting family on the conformal towers.

(3) Spectral classification (Conjectures (I), (II), (A), (B), (III) of sec. 10). Every low-energy Bethe state flows either to the continuous sector (real limiting ss) or to the discrete sector with s=±iqas=\pm{\rm i}\mathfrak q_a or ±iqˉa\pm{\rm i}\bar{\mathfrak q}_a, where qa=−p−12−a\mathfrak q_a=-p-\tfrac12-a and qˉa=−pˉ−12−a\bar{\mathfrak q}_a=-\bar p-\tfrac12-a with aa an integer in the bounded range of eq. (10.27); and the number of RG trajectories at level (L,Lˉ)(\mathtt{L},\bar{\mathtt{L}}) with a given limiting value is exactly dSz+a(Lˉ) da(L)d_{S^z+a}(\bar{\mathtt{L}})\,d_a(\mathtt{L}) (resp. da(Lˉ) dSz+a(L)d_a(\bar{\mathtt{L}})\,d_{S^z+a}(\mathtt{L})), with dad_a defined by the generating function (10.25) — establishing in particular existence and uniqueness of the RG trajectory for each admissible data set.

These three components form one scientific objective — establishing the conjectured continuum description of the scaling limit — since (2) is the operator-level content of (1) and (3) is the completeness statement of the same correspondence. An answer may be a proof of (1)–(3) in full (a precisely delimited partial proof is acceptable only if it states exactly which states, levels and parameters remain unsettled), or a rigorous refutation: an explicitly identified state and parameter values inside the conjecture's domain for which the scaling limit in (1) fails to exist or differs from D±D_\pm, or for which the classification (3) fails (a low-energy state whose b(N)b(N) has a limit outside the predicted set, or degeneracies violating the counting formula). The exact analytic determination of the norm constants C(β)C(\beta), C0(β)C_0(\beta), C0(alt)C_0^{(\rm alt)} and the construction of the Lorentzian black-hole QFT as a complete local theory are related open issues recorded in the source, but lie outside the completion boundary of this problem.
