Smirnov and Zamolodchikov (2016) showed that any massive two-dimensional integrable quantum field theory (IQFT) admits an infinite family of integrable irrelevant deformations XsX_s — bilinear composites of the left- and right-moving components of the higher-spin conserved currents — which act on the factorizable S-matrix as CDD-factor deformations, and posed the problem of mapping the space ΣInt\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}} of integrable QFTs: its tangent space, its UV-complete subspace, and the analytic structures that probe locality within it. A decade of follow-up literature resolved two of their open issues: the conjecture that the deformed integrals of motion still mutually commute was proven by Le Floch and Mezei for deformations built from composites of commuting currents, and the finite-size square-root singularities of generic CDD deformations were given a physical mechanism as Hagedorn-type behavior incompatible with Wilsonian locality (asymptotic fragility). The surviving open core consists of four linked deliverables: (1) complete the classification of integrable tangent directions at a generic massive IQFT, including the principal deformations that change the Yang–Baxter solution and the charged semi-local deformations of sine-Gordon; (2) determine which CDD/XsX_s-deformed theories are UV complete, as a criterion in the CDD data, and classify the UV completions; (3) establish rigorous convergence and analytic continuation of the form-factor (spectral) series for generic CDD factors, including the conjectured branch point at R∗R_*; (4) construct the fermionic creation/annihilation operators of the sine-Gordon fermionic basis directly in the continuum theory or its UV conformal field theory.

Background

In 1+11+1-dimensional relativistic QFT, a special class of theories — integrable QFTs (IQFTs) — possess infinitely many mutually commuting local conserved quantities (integrals of motion, IM) PsP_s of Lorentz spin s>1s>1, built from conserved currents (Ts+1,Θs−1)(T_{s+1},\Theta_{s-1}) obeying ∂ˉTs+1=∂Θs−1\bar\partial T_{s+1}=\partial\Theta_{s-1} (overbars denote the right-moving sector). Their presence forbids particle production and momentum exchange, so the many-particle S-matrix factorizes into two-particle amplitudes S(θ)S(\theta) depending only on the rapidity difference θ=θ1−θ2\theta=\theta_1-\theta_2. The two-particle amplitude is constrained by unitarity S(θ)S(−θ)=1S(\theta)S(-\theta)=1 and crossing S(iπ−θ)=S(θ)S(i\pi-\theta)=S(\theta), and, when mass degeneracies are present, by the Yang–Baxter equation (YBE), a consistency condition on three-particle scattering. These constraints fix SS only up to a CDD factor: a meromorphic function Φ(θ)\Phi(\theta), analytic and bounded in the physical strip 0<Im θ<π0<\mathrm{Im}\,\theta<\pi, satisfying Φ(θ)Φ(−θ)=1\Phi(\theta)\Phi(-\theta)=1 and Φ(iπ+θ)Φ(iπ−θ)=1\Phi(i\pi+\theta)\Phi(i\pi-\theta)=1 (eq. (7.2) of the source); equivalently a choice of poles {Bp}\{B_p\} via Φ(θ)=∏p(Bp−isinh⁡θ)/(Bp+isinh⁡θ)\Phi(\theta)=\prod_p(B_p-i\sinh\theta)/(B_p+i\sinh\theta), or of deformation coordinates {αs}\{\alpha_s\} through the formal expansion Φ(θ)=exp⁡{i∑sαssinh⁡(sθ)}\Phi(\theta)=\exp\{i\sum_s\alpha_s\sinh(s\theta)\} (eq. (7.3) of the source).

Smirnov and Zamolodchikov studied the space Σ\Sigma of all two-dimensional QFTs (defined with a Wilsonian ultraviolet cutoff) and its integrable subspace ΣInt\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}}, asking which infinitesimal deformations of an IQFT preserve integrability — the tangent space TΣIntT\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}}. They showed it always contains the infinite family of scalar fields

Xs(z)=lim⁡z′→z[Ts+1(z)Tˉs+1(z′)−Θs−1(z)Θˉs−1(z′)],X_s(z)=\lim_{z'\to z}\left[T_{s+1}(z)\bar T_{s+1}(z')-\Theta_{s-1}(z)\bar\Theta_{s-1}(z')\right],

one for each IM; s=1s=1 is the much-studied (TTˉ)(T\bar T)-deformation. They proved that deforming by any XsX_s preserves conservation of the whole set of IM, and that in massive theories this deformation acts on the S-matrix precisely as a CDD factor. Relative to a conformal ultraviolet (UV) fixed point the XsX_s have mass dimension 2(s+1)2(s+1), so all these deformations are irrelevant and generally — but not always — destroy UV completeness, i.e. the existence of a well-defined limit in which the cutoff length ϵ→0\epsilon\to 0 (equivalently, an RG trajectory extendible indefinitely backward in renormalization-group time; UV-complete theories form a subspace Σ(∞)⊂Σ\Sigma^{(\infty)}\subset\Sigma). They conjectured, without proof, that the deformed IM still mutually commute (now proven), noted that the full tangent space may also contain finitely many principal deformations — those changing the YBE solution itself rather than its scalar CDD factor — and left the classification of TΣIntT\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}} open.

Two analytic structures enter the problem. First, UV consistency and locality can be probed on a cylinder of circumference RR through the finite-size energies E(R)E(R), computable exactly from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA), a system of nonlinear integral equations for the ground-state energy determined by the factorized S-matrix; and through the form-factor expansion: the two-point function of a local operator is a spectral series over multiparticle matrix elements (form factors), which in a local theory converges for all R>0R>0. For generic CDD factors, numerical TBA studies dating to the early 1990s show E(R)E(R) developing a square-root branch point at finite R∗R_* — the same singularity produced by (TTˉ)(T\bar T) flows from a conformal field theory (CFT) — and Smirnov–Zamolodchikov argued it plausibly signals a breakdown of true locality, since the discontinuity across the branch cut is directly related to the commutator. Which CDD deformations instead yield UV-complete IQFT (the staircase-type models being the classic examples) was left open. Second, the local and semi-local operators of the sine-Gordon (SG) model admit an expansion in the fermionic basis, a distinguished operator basis built from auxiliary fermionic creation/annihilation operators discovered through the hidden Grassmann structure of the XXZ spin chain, whose explicit realization directly in the continuum theory or its UV CFT was stated to remain largely open.

Problem Statement

The overarching objective, as posed by Smirnov and Zamolodchikov, is the geometric characterization of the integrable subspace ΣInt\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}} of the space of two-dimensional QFTs: its local structure (the tangent space of integrable deformations), its UV boundary (which deformations of a UV-complete theory remain UV complete), and the analytic structures inside it that probe locality. Two of the original threads — commutativity of the deformed IM and the mechanism of the finite-RR singularities — are settled. The remaining problem has four linked deliverables, none restricted to free theories or isolated examples: (1)–(3) are posed for generic massive IQFTs, with sine-Gordon as the paradigmatic interacting case, and (4) is specific to sine-Gordon:

(1) Tangent-space classification. For a massive IQFT with factorizable S-matrix (the sine-Gordon model as the paradigmatic case), determine the full tangent space TΣIntT\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}}: prove that the infinite family XsX_s together with the finitely many principal deformations — those changing the solution of the Yang–Baxter equation, such as the coupling shift generated by (∂μφ)2(\partial_\mu\varphi)^2 and the soliton-creating semi-local operator Y=O04+O0−4Y=O_{04}+O_{0-4} in sine-Gordon — exhaust the integrable tangent directions, or exhibit the additional directions. This includes the charged semi-local deformations: account within the classification for the integrable deformations generated by charged non-local operators, in particular the confining perturbations exp⁡{±iφ/β}\exp\{\pm i\varphi/\beta\} of sine-Gordon, which the source showed to lie in TΣIntT\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}}.

(2) UV-completion criterion. Given CDD data (pole positions {Bp}\{B_p\} or coordinates {αs}\{\alpha_s\}) specifying a deformation of a massive IQFT or CFT, decide whether the deformed theory is UV complete: give necessary and sufficient conditions under which the finite-size ground-state energy E(R)E(R) obtained from the TBA equations is regular for all R>0R>0 with a CFT-like R→0R\to 0 limit, rather than developing a square-root branch point at finite R∗R_*; and classify the UV completions.

(3) Locality of the spectral expansion. For theories with generic CDD factors, determine the convergence domain in RR of the form-factor series for two-point correlation functions: prove or refute that the series converges only for R>R∗R>R_*, that it exhibits a branch point at R∗R_*, and what this implies about locality of the deformed theory (the relation between the discontinuity across the branch cut and the commutator).

(4) Continuum fermionic basis. Construct the fermionic creation/annihilation operators of the sine-Gordon fermionic basis explicitly in the continuum massive theory or its UV CFT (beyond the free fermion point), or prove an obstruction to such a construction.

Each of the four deliverables is independently refutable and counts on its own; the demands listed within a single item are components of that one deliverable, not separate mandatory tasks, so a complete resolution of any single item is a self-contained contribution. These deliverables are jointly the map of ΣInt\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}}: (1) provides the local coordinates; (2) determines which deformations extend to Σ(∞)∩ΣInt\Sigma^{(\infty)}\cap\Sigma^{\mathrm{Int}}; (3) is the analytic locality test that motivates the criterion in (2) and is computed from form factors whose structure (4) explains constructively.
