Gahramanov and Jafarzade conjectured a higher-rank basic hypergeometric sum/integral identity - the transformation property of the three-dimensional superconformal index of SU(n)SU(n) super-QCD with 2n2n flavor pairs under Aharony-Seiberg duality - and, from it, a multi-spin solution of the interaction-round-a-face (IRF) Yang-Baxter equation, equivalently of the star-star relation, for arbitrary component number nn. Only the univariate case n=2n=2, the W(E7)W(E_7) transformation of the V-function, is proven; the authors state explicitly that they 'just conjecture the solution' without carrying out detailed computations, and the normalizing function knk_n is specified only for n=2n=2. The open problem is to complete the formulation (explicit normalizer, product ranges, measure, contours, and convergence conventions for n>2n>2) and then rigorously prove the transformation identity and the Yang-Baxter equation for general nn, or to produce an explicit counterexample, thereby establishing or refuting the conjectured family of integrable lattice models with discrete and continuous spins.

Background

Two-dimensional lattice models of statistical mechanics are called integrable, or exactly solvable, when their transfer matrices commute; this commutativity is guaranteed by the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE), a functional equation for the Boltzmann weights of the model. In edge-interaction ('Ising-type') models, spins sit on lattice sites and interact along edges through weights Wα(σi,σj)\mathcal{W}_\alpha(\sigma_i,\sigma_j), and the YBE reduces to the star-triangle relation, an identity between a sum/integral over a central spin and a product of three edge weights. In interaction-round-a-face (IRF, or face) models the four spins surrounding an elementary square interact through a face weight R\mathbb{R}, and the face-type YBE can be rewritten as a star-star relation for edge weights. In models with discrete and continuous spin, each spin variable is a pair σ=(x,m)\sigma=(x,m) with a continuous component 0≤x<10\le x<1 and a discrete component m∈Zm\in\mathbb{Z}, so every spin summation becomes a combined sum over integers and contour integral.

The gauge/YBE correspondence connects such integrability conditions with supersymmetric gauge dynamics: the superconformal index of a three-dimensional N=2\mathcal{N}=2 gauge theory (a protected, exactly computable twisted partition function on S2×S1S^2\times S^1, reducible by path-integral localization to a finite matrix integral) is a sum over discrete magnetic fluxes mk∈Zm_k\in\mathbb{Z} and a contour integral over gauge fugacities zkz_k, and the equality of indices for a dual pair of theories becomes an integral identity readable as a star-triangle or star-star relation. The integrands are built from the q-Pochhammer symbol (z;q)∞:=∏i≥0(1−zqi)(z;q)_\infty:=\prod_{i\ge 0}(1-zq^i), the basic building block of basic hypergeometric (q-deformed hypergeometric) functions. For super-QCD with gauge group SU(n)SU(n) and flavor group SU(2n)×SU(2n)SU(2n)\times SU(2n), the index is the sum/integral I({tj},{sj})\mathcal{I}(\{t_j\},\{s_j\}) of eq. (3.1) of the source paper, and the expected index equality with its Aharony-Seiberg dual (the three-dimensional analogue of Seiberg's four-dimensional infrared duality between gauge theories with different matter content but the same low-energy physics, here an SU(n)SU(n) theory coupled to (2n)2(2n)^2 mesons) yields the transformation of eq. (3.2): I({tj},{sj})\mathcal{I}(\{t_j\},\{s_j\}) equals a product of (2n)2(2n)^2 q-Pochhammer pairs times I({t~j},{s~j})\mathcal{I}(\{\tilde t_j\},\{\tilde s_j\}), under the balancing conditions ∏j=12nsjtj=qn\prod_{j=1}^{2n}s_jt_j=q^n and ∑j=12n(τj+κj)=0\sum_{j=1}^{2n}(\tau_j+\kappa_j)=0, with the tilde maps of eqs. (3.3)-(3.4).

For n=2n=2 this is the known W(E7)W(E_7) transformation property (invariance under the Weyl group of the exceptional root system E7E_7) of the V-function of Gahramanov and Spiridonov (a univariate basic hypergeometric sum/integral), derived via q-Bailey chains (iterative applications of a q-hypergeometric summation identity that map the function to a transformed one), and the univariate basic hypergeometric sum/integral identities encoding three-dimensional dualities have rigorous proofs by Gahramanov and Rosengren. Repeating, in this three-dimensional-index setting, the construction that Bazhanov and Sergeev and Bazhanov, Kels and Sergeev carried out for the elliptic gamma function (a doubly q-deformed generalization of the q-Pochhammer symbol governing four-dimensional supersymmetric indices), Gahramanov and Jafarzade conjectured from the transformation (3.2) a face weight R\mathbb{R} (their eq. (3.7)) - essentially I\mathcal{I} multiplied by the inverse square root of the prefactor and normalized by a factor ϱ\varrho built from self-interaction terms S\mathbb{S} and a normalizing function knk_n - as a multi-spin solution of the face YBE (3.6) and the star-star relation (3.15) for arbitrary component number nn. They state explicitly that this is a conjecture whose detailed verification was not carried out; notably, the normalizer knk_n is specified only for n=2n=2. The multivariate elliptic analogues of the needed transformation (those governing supersymmetric indices on the four-dimensional lens spaces S3/ZrS^3/\mathbb{Z}_r) have since been proven rigorously by Kels and Yamazaki for the AnA_n and BCnBC_n root systems, which makes the basic hypergeometric (three-dimensional) case a well-defined remaining gap.

Problem Statement

Prove or refute, for general component number nn, the conjecture of Gahramanov and Jafarzade. Its two requested results form a single scientific objective: the transformation identity below is exactly the analytic content of the star-star relation, so establishing both establishes the conjectured multi-spin solution of the Yang-Baxter equation, while a counterexample to either at any fixed n≥3n\ge 3 refutes it.

(1) The basic hypergeometric sum/integral identity. Let ∣q∣<1|q|<1 and let tjt_j, sjs_j (j=1,…,2nj=1,\ldots,2n) be complex parameters carrying discrete shifts τj\tau_j, κj\kappa_j. Define

I({tj},{sj})=∑m1,…,mn∈Z∮∏k=1n∏j=12n(q1+τj+mk21tjzk;q)∞(qτj+mk2tjzk;q)∞(q1+κj−mk2zksj;q)∞(qmk−κj2sjzk;q)∞×(qmk−mj2zjzk;q)∞(q1+mj−mk2zkzj;q)∞∏k=1n−1dzkzk,\mathcal{I}(\{t_j\},\{s_j\})=\sum_{m_1,\ldots,m_n\in\mathbb{Z}}\oint\prod_{k=1}^{n}\prod_{j=1}^{2n}\frac{\Big(q^{1+\frac{\tau_j+m_k}{2}}\frac{1}{t_jz_k};q\Big)_\infty}{\Big(q^{\frac{\tau_j+m_k}{2}}t_jz_k;q\Big)_\infty}\frac{\Big(q^{1+\frac{\kappa_j-m_k}{2}}\frac{z_k}{s_j};q\Big)_\infty}{\Big(q^{\frac{m_k-\kappa_j}{2}}\frac{s_j}{z_k};q\Big)_\infty}\times\frac{\Big(q^{\frac{m_k-m_j}{2}}\frac{z_j}{z_k};q\Big)_\infty}{\Big(q^{1+\frac{m_j-m_k}{2}}\frac{z_k}{z_j};q\Big)_\infty}\prod_{k=1}^{n-1}\frac{dz_k}{z_k},

where the last pair factor runs over 1≤j≠k≤n1\le j\ne k\le n and the remaining gauge fugacity is fixed by ∏k=1nzk=1\prod_{k=1}^{n}z_k=1 (the source writes nn gauge fugacities but only n−1n-1 differentials; making the implicit product ranges, the constraint, the contours, and the convergence of the flux sums explicit is part of the task, and the case n=2n=2 reduces to the known V-function transformation). Prove, or disprove, that under the balancing conditions ∏j=12nsjtj=qn\prod_{j=1}^{2n}s_jt_j=q^n and ∑j=12n(τj+κj)=0\sum_{j=1}^{2n}(\tau_j+\kappa_j)=0,

(2) The multi-spin Yang-Baxter solution. Under the parametrization of eqs. with ϱ=S(c∣C) S(b∣B)/[kn(η−u+v) kn(η−u′+v′) kn(u′−v) kn(u−v′)]\varrho=\sqrt{\mathbb{S}(\boldsymbol{c|C})\,\mathbb{S}(\boldsymbol{b|B})}/[k_n(\eta-u+v)\,k_n(\eta-u'+v')\,k_n(u'-v)\,k_n(u-v')] and S(x∣X)=12(∏1≤j≠k≤n(q1+Xj−Xk2zkzj;q)∞(qXk−Xj2zjzk;q)∞)−1\mathbb{S}(\boldsymbol{x|X})=\frac{1}{2}\left(\prod_{1\le j\ne k\le n}\frac{\Big(q^{1+\frac{X_j-X_k}{2}}\frac{z_k}{z_j};q\Big)_\infty}{\Big(q^{\frac{X_k-X_j}{2}}\frac{z_j}{z_k};q\Big)_\infty}\right)^{-1} with zj=q2ixjz_j=q^{2ix_j} (eq. (3.14) of the source), satisfy the multi-spin IRF Yang-Baxter equation (3.6) - the face-type Yang-Baxter equation for multi-component spins, in which each side is a sum over the intermediate discrete spin H\boldsymbol{H} and an integral over the intermediate continuous spin h\boldsymbol{h} of a product of three face weights, with the spectral-parameter pairs (u∣U,v∣V)(\boldsymbol{u|U},\boldsymbol{v|V}), (u∣U,w∣W)(\boldsymbol{u|U},\boldsymbol{w|W}), (v∣V,w∣W)(\boldsymbol{v|V},\boldsymbol{w|W}) combined in the two different orders displayed in the source - equivalently, that the underlying edge Boltzmann weights satisfy the star-star relation (3.15).

The answer must retain the source's generality: all nn, generic continuous and discrete spins, and generic spectral parameters. A valid resolution is either a rigorous proof of (1) and (2) for every nn after fixing the precise formulation, or an explicit counterexample at any fixed n≥3n\ge 3: a certified numerical mismatch of the two sides of the transformation, or an exact mismatch of coefficients in the fugacity power-series expansion, at explicit parameters satisfying the balancing conditions. The q→1q\to 1 degenerations and the quantum-algebraic interpretation of the solution, mentioned in the source as further directions, are not part of the problem.
