The graded parafermion conformal field theories — the cosets osp^(1,2)k/u^(1)\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k/\widehat{\mathfrak{u}}(1), a Lie-superalgebraic cousin of the Zk\mathbb{Z}_k parafermion models — have three equivalent character formulae: bosonic, fermionic, and spinon-type. Fortin, Mathieu and Warnaar (2007) proved the equality of all three at finite level kk by q-series and lattice-path methods, but left two structural gaps open: no spinon-type basis of states has been constructed whose counting yields the spinon formula (which would explain from first principles the triplet structure of the osp(1,2)\mathfrak{osp}(1,2) spinon and its extra n0n_0 mode), and the spinon-equals-fermionic (S=F) identity has no purely analytic large-kk proof analogous to the one they gave for B=F, because its finite-kk proof rests on a higher-level Bailey-type transformation that does not simplify as k→∞k\to\infty. Both gaps likewise remain open in the subsequent literature (through 2026). The problem asks for (i) an explicit, provably complete spinon-type basis for the osp^(1,2)k\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k modules whose graded counting reproduces the spinon character formula term by term, and (ii) a purely analytic derivation of S=F in the k→∞k\to\infty limit at fixed Dynkin label and charge.

Background

Two-dimensional parafermionic conformal field theories are exactly solved chiral theories built from fields of fractional spin. The prototype is the Zk\mathbb{Z}_k parafermion theory, realizable as the coset (quotient) of the su^(2)k\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(2)_k Wess–Zumino–Witten model — the chiral theory with affine Lie algebra symmetry su^(2)\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(2) at integer level kk — by its u^(1)\widehat{\mathfrak{u}}(1) Cartan subalgebra; the characters (graded traces Tr qL0−c/24\mathrm{Tr}\,q^{L_0-c/24} over a module) of a coset theory are branching functions of the numerator characters, i.e. the graded multiplicities with which a numerator character decomposes over the denominator theory. The graded parafermion theories generalize this by replacing su(2)\mathfrak{su}(2) with the Lie superalgebra osp(1,2)\mathfrak{osp}(1,2), obtained from su(2)\mathfrak{su}(2) by adding two odd generators F±F^\pm with (F±)2=J±(F^\pm)^2=J^\pm. Introduced by Camino, Ramallo and Sánchez de Santos in 1998, the graded parafermion theory at level kk is generated by 'fermionic' parafermions ψ1/2,ψ1/2†\psi_{1/2},\psi_{1/2}^\dagger of conformal dimension 1−1/(4k)1-1/(4k), has central charge c=−3/(2k+3)c=-3/(2k+3) (it is non-unitary), and is equivalent to the coset osp^(1,2)k/u^(1)\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k/\widehat{\mathfrak{u}}(1). Its irreducible characters χℓ,r(q)\chi_{\ell,r}(q) carry an integer Dynkin label ℓ\ell (integrable modules have 0≤ℓ≤k0\le\ell\le k) and a Z\mathbb{Z}-valued relative charge rr, with χℓ,r(q)=χℓ,−r−2ℓ(q)\chi_{\ell,r}(q)=\chi_{\ell,-r-2\ell}(q).

Three equivalent formulae are known for these characters. The bosonic form follows from the u^(1)\widehat{\mathfrak{u}}(1) branching of the osp^(1,2)k\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k characters, computed via the Weyl–Kac formula (the affine-Kac–Moody generalization of the Weyl character formula). The fermionic form expresses the character as a multiple sum with denominator products (q;q)ni=∏j=1ni(1−qj)(q;q)_{n_i}=\prod_{j=1}^{n_i}(1-q^j), reflecting a quasi-particle basis of states filled subject to a generalized exclusion principle (Haldane-type statistics in which occupancy constraints replace ordinary Fermi statistics); for graded parafermions such a quasi-particle basis was constructed by Jacob and Mathieu, governed by a modified Z2k\mathbb{Z}_{2k} exclusion rule with a hidden Z3\mathbb{Z}_3 structure. The spinon form is the newest. In the su^(2)k\widehat{\mathfrak{su}}(2)_k WZW model the spinon is the fundamental (ℓ=1\ell=1) primary field, a doublet, and the character admits a formula in which the module is decomposed into multi-spinon states labeled by discrete momenta subject to generalized exclusion statistics; this was conjectured by Bouwknegt, Ludwig and Schoutens and proved using the crystalline spinon basis of Nakayashiki and Yamada (a realization in terms of crystal bases, the combinatorial q→0q\to0 skeletons of representations, together with paths of the RSOS, i.e. restricted solid-on-solid, lattice models). Fortin–Mathieu–Warnaar (2007) wrote the osp^(1,2)k\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k analogue: the spinon is now a triplet (the ℓ=1\ell=1 primary of osp(1,2)\mathfrak{osp}(1,2) is three-dimensional), the third component manifesting itself as an additional occupation number n0n_0 in a multiple sum whose other ingredients are the occupation numbers n1,…,nk−1n_1,\dots,n_{k-1}, a quadratic form built from the inverse C−1C^{-1} of the Ak−1A_{k-1} Cartan matrix (that of slk\mathfrak{sl}_k, of rank k−1k-1, matching the k−1k-1 occupation numbers), generalized-exclusion q-binomial factors (ni+mini)q\binom{n_i+m_i}{n_i}_q, and congruence constraints; branching to the coset gives the spinon form χℓ,rS(q)\chi^S_{\ell,r}(q) of the graded parafermion characters.

Fortin, Mathieu and Warnaar proved the equality χℓ,rB(q)=χℓ,rS(q)=χℓ,rF(q)\chi^B_{\ell,r}(q)=\chi^S_{\ell,r}(q)=\chi^F_{\ell,r}(q) for all ℓ,r\ell,r at finite kk, by q-series methods combined with one-dimensional configuration sums (weighted sums over the admissible height configurations of a one-dimensional lattice) of the (k+1)(k+1)-state Andrews–Baxter–Forrester (ABF) solid-on-solid lattice model, using the factorization of the coset into M(k+2,2k+3)× ZkM(k+2,2k+3)\times\,\mathbb{Z}_k-parafermions (a non-unitary Virasoro minimal model — a chiral theory with finitely many primary fields — times the ordinary parafermion theory) and higher-level Bailey lemmas (iterated q-series transformation schemes for Bailey pairs, pairs of sequences linked by an inversion formula that generates q-series identities). They also proved, purely analytically, that as k→∞k\to\infty at fixed ℓ,r\ell,r the bosonic and fermionic characters both degenerate to the difference Vr(q)−Vr+2ℓ+1(q)V_r(q)-V_{r+2\ell+1}(q) of two Verma characters, where Vr(q)V_r(q) is the character of the free module of relative charge rr (Theorem 4.1). Two structural gaps were explicitly left open and define the problem studied here: the spinon formula is established only as an identity of q-series — no spinon-type basis of states is known whose counting produces it (in contrast to the fermionic form, and to the su(2)\mathfrak{su}(2) case where the crystalline spinon basis exists) — and the S=F equality has no purely analytic large-kk proof, because its finite-kk proof rests on a higher-level Bailey-type transformation (Proposition 3.3 of that paper) that does not significantly simplify as k→∞k\to\infty.

Problem Statement

Give the spinon-type character formula of the graded parafermion theory (coset osp^(1,2)k/u^(1)\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k/\widehat{\mathfrak{u}}(1)) the same first-principles foundation that its bosonic and fermionic counterparts already possess. Concretely, resolve the two linked issues left open by Fortin–Mathieu–Warnaar:

(1) Spinon-type basis. Construct explicitly a spinon-type basis of states — a microscopic quasi-particle/spinon realization — for the integrable modules of osp^(1,2)k\widehat{\mathfrak{osp}}(1,2)_k, and thereby, through the u^(1)\widehat{\mathfrak{u}}(1) branching, for the graded parafermion modules, such that the graded counting of basis states at fixed relative charge rr directly and term-by-term produces the spinon character formula (eqs. (1.20)–(1.21) of Fortin–Mathieu–Warnaar, including its multiple sum over the occupation numbers n0,…,nk−1n_0,\dots,n_{k-1} and LL, its quadratic form built from the inverse C−1C^{-1} of the Ak−1A_{k-1} Cartan matrix (the Cartan matrix of slk\mathfrak{sl}_k, acting on the k−1k-1 occupation numbers), its generalized-exclusion q-binomial factors (ni+mini)q\binom{n_i+m_i}{n_i}_q, and its congruence constraints), thereby explaining from first principles the triplet structure of the osp(1,2)\mathfrak{osp}(1,2) spinon and the presence and combinatorics of the n0n_0 mode. The construction must include a proof that the proposed states form a basis (linear independence and completeness/spanning of the module).

(2) Analytic large-kk proof of S=F. Provide a purely analytic derivation, in the limit k→∞k\to\infty at fixed ℓ\ell and rr (as in Theorem 4.1: ℓ\ell a positive integer and rr an arbitrary integer), of the equality between the spinon-form and fermionic-form graded parafermion characters, analogous to the purely analytic large-kk proof of B=F given by Theorem 4.1 of Fortin–Mathieu–Warnaar. The known finite-kk proof of S=F proceeds through Proposition 3.3, a higher-level Bailey-type transformation that does not significantly simplify in the large-kk limit; the requested derivation must circumvent this obstacle, with all interchanges of limits and sums justified, and should make plain how the n0n_0 mode behaves in the limit.

The common objective of the two deliverables is to replace the currently purely combinatorial (q-series/lattice-path) verification of the spinon formula with a structural, representation-theoretic foundation (deliverable 1) and a self-contained analytic limiting argument (deliverable 2); a complete answer addresses both, and each is independently checkable against the published formulae.
