Maillet, Niccoli and Vignoli (SciPost Phys. 9, 060 (2020)) constructed quantum separation-of-variables (SoV) bases for the fundamental inhomogeneous supersymmetric spin chains and for the inhomogeneous Hubbard model with quasi-periodic twisted boundary conditions given by twist matrices of simple spectrum, proving non-degeneracy and diagonalizability of the transfer matrices in these bases. However, the complete solution of the spectral problem under general twisted boundary conditions was left open: the closure relations (fusion relations plus inner-boundary and null out-boundary conditions) were conjectured, but proven only for the special class of non-invertible simple-spectrum twists in the cases (established in detail for ), and the fusion/closure relations for the Hubbard transfer matrices were not derived at all, with both deferred to a future publication that has not appeared. The open problem is to derive the complete fusion/closure relations for the Hubbard transfer matrices and to prove that the resulting finite functional system completely characterizes the transfer-matrix spectrum for both model classes under general simple-spectrum twists, yielding the complete SoV spectral solution (eigenvalues and factorized eigenvectors). The 2025 review by Levkovich-Maslyuk reports that for supersymmetric chains only partial SoV results are known; the eigenvalue-completeness content for fundamental chains was, however, independently resolved by Chernyak, Leurent and Volin (Comm. Math. Phys. 391 (2022) 969) via Wronskian Bethe equations, by a route that does not prove the SoV closure statements.
Background
A large family of quantum integrable lattice models is built from a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation, an operator on the tensor product of two auxiliary spaces that encodes the integrable structure. Monodromy matrices are formed as products of -matrices acting on a chain of quantum sites, and the transfer matrix — the trace (in the auxiliary space, with grading signs for supersymmetric models) of the monodromy, taken with a twist matrix inserted before tracing — generates commuting conserved charges. Quasi-periodic (twisted) boundary conditions correspond to a non-trivial ; a twist matrix has simple spectrum if its eigenvalues are pairwise distinct. For supersymmetric chains based on the Lie superalgebra the auxiliary space is with a grading, and signs from permuting fermionic indices modify the trace. The Hubbard model — the paradigmatic model of correlated electrons on a lattice — is integrable through Shastry's -matrix, whose two-particle scattering entangles a pair of spectral parameters, a structure with no direct analogue in the rational or trigonometric chains.
The quantum separation of variables (SoV) method replaces the -body spectral problem of the transfer matrix by one-variable problems: one constructs a basis of the Hilbert space in which a family of commuting operators (the conserved charges contained in the transfer matrix) take prescribed separate values, so that transfer-matrix eigenvectors have factorized wavefunctions and the spectral problem reduces to a finite system of functional equations. Maillet and Niccoli (SciPost Phys. 6, 071 (2019)) realized this program completely for the non-graded rational chains, where is the Yangian, the algebra of commuting charges generated by the rational monodromy matrices: the SoV basis is generated by multiple actions of transfer matrices on a generic co-vector, and the spectrum is characterized by the fusion relations — functional relations among transfer matrices fused over symmetric and antisymmetric auxiliary representations , indexed by Young diagrams — supplemented by boundary conditions on the Young-diagram domain (the inner-boundary condition and the vanishing of transfer matrices outside the domain, the null out-boundary conditions). Maillet, Niccoli and Vignoli (SciPost Phys. 9, 060 (2020)) extended the SoV basis construction to the fundamental inhomogeneous chains — fundamental meaning that each quantum space carries the defining -dimensional representation, inhomogeneous that the -matrix at site is evaluated at a site-dependent spectral shift — and to the inhomogeneous Hubbard model with simple-spectrum twists, proving that the transfer matrices then have non-degenerate, simple spectra and are diagonalizable, with factorized SoV wavefunctions. For the spectrum itself they proved the complete characterization only for the chain with a special class of non-invertible simple-spectrum twists (zero determinant), where the closure of the fusion relations reduces the spectral problem to a single polynomial functional equation (a quantum spectral curve) and the completeness of the Bethe ansatz — the statement that the eigenstates obtained from the standard ansatz of plane waves parametrized by quasimomenta (the Bethe roots) span the whole Hilbert space — follows as a corollary, and the same special-class characterization extends to the non-invertible twists; for general twists the characterization was stated as Conjecture 3.1, verified on two- and three-site chains, and the complete solution for both model classes was deferred to a future publication. The Hubbard fusion/closure relations were explicitly not derived, the fusion structure being, in the authors' words, rather involved.
Independently, Chernyak, Leurent and Volin (Comm. Math. Phys. 391 (2022) 969) proved completeness of the Wronskian Bethe equations — functional equations among Baxter Q-functions (polynomial eigenvalue functions of mutually commuting Q-operators) written as Wronskian determinants — for rational spin chains in the defining representation, for generic diagonalizable twists with distinct eigenvalues and for periodic chains, showing the solution count equals the Hilbert-space dimension. This resolves the eigenvalue-completeness question for fundamental supersymmetric chains by a Q-function route, but it does not prove the SoV closure conjecture, does not construct the SoV eigenvectors, and does not address the Hubbard model. For ordinary chains the SoV program advanced further (SoV in any compact representation by Ryan and Volin; determinant formulae for correlators by Gromov, Levkovich-Maslyuk and Ryan), while a 2025 review by Levkovich-Maslyuk records that for supersymmetric chains only partial SoV results exist and that closure of the algebra of SoV creation operators is more nontrivial there. The Q-operator construction and determinant formulae for scalar products (overlaps of SoV basis elements and eigenstates) and form factors (matrix elements of local operators between transfer-matrix eigenstates) in the graded and Hubbard SoV frameworks were outlined as expected consequences and remain undone.
Problem Statement
Derive the complete fusion/closure relations for the transfer matrices of the inhomogeneous Hubbard model defined with quasi-periodic twisted boundary conditions given by a general simple-spectrum twist matrix, and prove, for the fundamental inhomogeneous chains and the inhomogeneous Hubbard model alike, that the resulting finite system of functional and discrete equations — the fusion relations among the fused transfer-matrix eigenvalues together with the inner-boundary condition and the null out-boundary conditions, with the trivial solution excluded in the invertible-twist case — is in bijection with the transfer-matrix spectrum for arbitrary chain length (Conjecture 3.1 of Maillet, Niccoli and Vignoli and its generalization). A complete answer supplies, for both model classes and general simple-spectrum twists, the explicit closure system, the proof that every transfer-matrix eigenvalue solves it and that it admits no spurious solutions, and thereby the complete SoV solution of the spectral problem: eigenvalues and the factorized eigenvector wavefunctions in the SoV basis.
