The LeClair-Mussardo (LM) series expresses correlation functions of integrable models in thermal or generalized Gibbs ensembles as infinite integral series over vacuum form factors weighted by the Bethe-root filling functions. Hutsalyuk, Pozsgay and Pristyák (2021) proved the underlying finite-volume expansion theorem and the thermodynamic LM series for nested Bethe ansatz models with gl(2|1) and gl(3) symmetry, but explicitly only for real Bethe roots: their worked example is the zero-temperature ground state of the repulsive Gaudin-Yang model, with convergent formulas in the strong-coupling, large-imbalance regime. The open problem posed in that work is to complete the program: prove the expansion theorem and the thermodynamic-limit series for Bethe root configurations containing string solutions (bound states), use this to compute finite-temperature expectation values and time-dependent two-point functions in nested models with a well-defined prescription for the time-dependent diagonal limits, and carry out the analogous explicit computations for the gl(3) two-component Bose gas.
Background
Integrable one-dimensional quantum models - the Heisenberg spin chains, the Lieb-Liniger Bose gas, the Gaudin-Yang model of spin-1/2 fermions with delta-function repulsion, and the two-component Bose gas (bosons occupying two distinct internal states) - are diagonalized by the Bethe ansatz: eigenstates are parametrized by a set of rapidities (Bethe roots) solving algebraic equations that encode factorized two-body scattering. In multi-component models the two-body scattering is non-diagonal (particles exchange their internal quantum number, for example spin), and the diagonalization requires a nested algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA); the Gaudin-Yang model belongs to the family with symmetry and the two-component Bose gas to the one with symmetry. Correlation functions are assembled from form factors, the matrix elements of local operators between Bethe eigenstates, which the ABA obtains from scalar products of off-shell Bethe vectors.
For equilibrium states at finite temperature or finite density - including generalized Gibbs ensembles, the steady states reached by integrable systems after a quench and specified by the rapidity distributions of all quasiparticle species - a compact representation is the LeClair-Mussardo (LM) series (Leclair-Mussardo 1999 in integrable quantum field theory, with precursors Izergin-Korepin 1984 and Korepin 1984 for the one-dimensional Bose gas): one- and two-point correlation functions become infinite integral series over the zero-temperature form factors, weighted only by statistical filling functions of the Bethe roots. Pozsgay (2011) showed that the LM series is the thermodynamic limit of a finite-volume expansion theorem for mean values of local operators in Bethe eigenstates, proven for models with symmetry, that is, one-component gases and diagonally scattering chains. Hutsalyuk, Pozsgay and Pristyák (2021) generalized this expansion theorem, in both its symmetric and connected form-factor versions, to nested Bethe ansatz systems with and symmetry, and took its thermodynamic limit, obtaining the nested LM series where are dressing functions fixed by the root densities and are thermodynamic symmetric form factors. Their worked example is the ground-state density-density correlator of the repulsive Gaudin-Yang model, in which all Bethe roots are real and the two spin components fill the rapidity intervals and at coupling : explicit convergent formulas were obtained only in the strong-coupling, large-imbalance regime , . They also observed that the form factors entering the series violate the selection rules of on-shell Bethe states, that is, they can be nonzero even when no corresponding on-shell two-particle state exists.
Two structures lie outside that proof. First, string solutions: in thermal and excited states, and generally in regimes with attraction, Bethe roots organize into regular complex-conjugate patterns (strings) describing bound states; the residue analysis of the nested scalar products and of the Izergin-Korepin and Gaudin determinants (the standard determinant representations for, respectively, scalar products of off-shell Bethe vectors and the norms of Bethe eigenstates), and the thermodynamic limit over the resulting string densities, are not covered by the real-root arguments. For -type models, correlators with arbitrary string distributions were treated by Mestyán and Pozsgay (2014) for the XXZ chain (the anisotropic Heisenberg spin- chain; a proof for the nearest-neighbor correlator and a conjecture for the rest), and Slavnov (2024) treated the attractive Lieb-Liniger gas by ABA; the nested case is open. Second, finite temperature and real-time dynamics: the LM series for two-point functions is subtle - the naive proposal was argued to be ill-defined (Saleur 2000) and repaired in integrable QFT by Pozsgay and Szécsényi (2018) - and no prescription for time-dependent diagonal limits exists for nested models. In parallel, a thermodynamic form-factor bootstrap (Cortés Cubero-Panfil 2019; Panfil 2021; Panfil-Konik 2023) constructs form factors between finite-energy-density states directly in integrable QFT and reproduces LM-type one- and two-point functions there, but only for one-component (diagonally scattering, Lieb-Liniger-type) models. The conclusion of the source paper therefore poses the completion of the nested LM program - string solutions, finite-temperature and time-dependent correlators, and the explicit two-component Bose gas computation - as its open outlook.
Problem Statement
Extend the nested LeClair-Mussardo expansion of Hutsalyuk, Pozsgay and Pristyák beyond the real-root, zero-temperature situation in which it was proved, completing the program posed in the conclusion of that work:
-
Prove the finite-volume expansion theorem, and derive the thermodynamic-limit integral series, for nested Bethe ansatz models (- and -related, such as the Gaudin-Yang model and the two-component Bose gas) for Bethe root configurations containing string solutions (bound-state complexes). This requires the analytic treatment of the residues of the nested scalar products and of the Izergin-Korepin and Gaudin determinants for complex root patterns, and the thermodynamic limit over the corresponding string densities.
-
Use this extension to compute finite-temperature expectation values (Gibbs and generalized Gibbs ensembles) and time-dependent two-point correlation functions in nested models, including a well-defined prescription for the time-dependent diagonal limits of the two-point functions.
-
Carry out the explicit computations for the two-component Bose gas analogous to those performed for the Gaudin-Yang ground state: the thermodynamic form factors, the weights , and explicit correlator formulas in an identifiable physical regime.
The common objective is a complete thermodynamic form-factor (LM-type) expansion for correlation functions of nested integrable models, covering bound states, finite temperature and real-time dynamics, demonstrated in explicit computations in addition to the source's single real-root example. The source additionally lists further extensions of the same method - -symmetric spin chains, the question whether a finite-volume expansion theorem exists in the sine-Gordon model, convergence control of the series outside , , and efficient general algorithms for the coefficients - which are not completion conditions of this problem.
