The exact solution of the rational (so) quantum spin chain with generic integrable non-diagonal open boundaries for arbitrary rank has not been obtained; only the degenerate low-rank cases are solved. The 2019 JHEP paper by Li, Cao, Xue, Hao, Sun, Yang, Shi and Wang solved, by the nested off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA), the exact spectrum of the model — the rational so(6) quantum spin chain — with periodic and with generic non-diagonal integrable open boundaries, and stated that the method and results could be generalized to the case directly. The (2014) and (2021) chains are solved with generic boundaries, while the D-series has only the degenerate low-rank cases (2022) and the -deformed (2023): no work constructs the fused transfer-matrix and reflection-matrix hierarchy for general (including its branching spinor sector), closes the operator product identities, and derives the resulting inhomogeneous relations and nested Bethe ansatz equations for generic non-diagonal open boundaries. The problem is open.
Background
A quantum integrable spin chain is a one-dimensional lattice model whose conserved quantities commute because they are generated by a transfer matrix , an inhomogeneous-product operator built from a matrix that solves the Yang-Baxter equation. Solving the model means diagonalizing and the Hamiltonian it generates. For chains associated with Lie algebras, the local quantum space carries a representation of the algebra and acts on tensor products of these spaces; the rational (Yangian-type) model is the chain based on the affine (loop) extension of so, with each site carrying the -dimensional vector representation and a rational -matrix satisfying the Yang-Baxter equation. The rank- family is degenerate at its lower end: is isomorphic to (so(6) is su(4)), and for the Dynkin diagram of develops its characteristic fork — a middle node branching into two conjugate spinor nodes — whose representation-theoretic consequences (two conjugate spinor representations of dimension ) are not genuinely new at rank 3: there the spinor representations exist, but under the isomorphism they coincide with the fundamental su(4) representations, and the corresponding spinorial fused transfer matrices reduce to the antisymmetric fused transfer matrices of the program; only for does the forked D-type fusion pattern become genuinely new.
For a finite open (non-periodic) chain, integrability requires boundary reflection matrices (K-matrices) at the two ends, constrained by the reflection equation; general solutions for the vector representation are classified in the literature (Malara and Lima-Santos, 2006). A generic non-diagonal K-matrix breaks the U(1) charge conservation of the bulk, and this is the technical crux: with U(1) broken, the traditional (nested) algebraic Bethe ansatz — which constructs eigenstates by successive pseudo-vacuum excitations — fails. The periodic chain is classical: Reshetikhin (1987) obtained its spectrum by the analytic Bethe ansatz, and open chains with quantum-algebra-invariant or diagonal boundaries (which conserve a residual charge) were solved by the analytical Bethe ansatz (Artz, Mezincescu and Nepomechie, 1995) and by the nested algebraic Bethe ansatz (Gerrard and Regelskis, 2020, for diagonal so(2n) and sp(2n) boundaries). The generic non-diagonal open case required a new method.
The off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA), introduced by Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang in 2013, determines transfer-matrix eigenvalues without reference to eigenstates: using fusion — projecting tensor powers of the auxiliary space onto irreducible subrepresentations to obtain fused transfer matrices — one derives closed operator product identities among the eigenvalues of the fused transfer matrices, and, together with their asymptotic behaviors and values at special spectral points, parametrizes the eigenvalues by (inhomogeneous) relations, where are auxiliary polynomial functions. Polynomiality (regularity) of the ansatz yields the Bethe ansatz equations (BAEs) for the zeros of the functions. For higher-rank algebras the method becomes nested: multiple levels of fusion and several auxiliary functions appear. The nested ODBA solved the su(n) chain with generic integrable boundaries in 2014, then the low-rank (so(5)), and cases, and in 2019 the ODBA paper [1] solved the model — the 'simplest case of ' — with periodic and with generic non-diagonal open boundaries: it constructed the fused transfer matrices, obtained complete operator product identities, and derived homogeneous relations for the periodic case and an inhomogeneous relation (with the BAEs) for the non-diagonal reflection case.
The paper's Discussion states only that 'the method and the results in this paper could be generalized to the case directly.' In the intervening years the same research program solved the chain for arbitrary with off-diagonal open boundaries (2021) and the degenerate chain with generic non-diagonal reflections (2022, framed by its authors as 'the foundation to exactly solve the high rank model with the nested method'), and the -deformed (trigonometric) vertex model with open boundaries (2023). The uniform-rank solution with generic open boundaries — which must handle the forking fusion hierarchy whose two conjugate spinor-type branches of fused transfer matrices follow, for , a branching pattern that does not occur in the and derivations and that at the degenerate rank-3 case collapses to the su(4) antisymmetric fused transfer matrices of the derivation — has not been carried out.
Problem Statement
Carry out the generalization announced in the ODBA paper [1]: derive the exact solution of the rational quantum spin chain (the so vector-representation chain) for arbitrary rank — with the genuinely new territory, since is isomorphic to and is already solved — with generic integrable non-diagonal open boundary conditions. Concretely, an acceptable solution must: (i) construct the fused transfer matrices and the fused reflection matrices of the fusion hierarchy for general , including the two conjugate spinor branches that the forking Dynkin diagram produces, and verify that the reflection equation holds on the corresponding projected subspaces; (ii) derive the complete set of operator product identities among the fused transfer matrices and close the fusion hierarchy so that the eigenvalues are determined; (iii) from these identities together with the asymptotic behaviors and the values at special spectral points, obtain the inhomogeneous relations and the nested Bethe ansatz equations for the transfer-matrix eigenvalues with generic non-diagonal K-matrices; and (iv) extract the Hamiltonian spectrum and demonstrate consistency with the known periodic-case results, with the quantum-algebra-invariant and diagonal-boundary limits, and with the published rank-3 solution. These four components are jointly in service of one objective — the exact spectrum of the general-rank open chain — and a solution of any proper subset (for example, a special boundary class, or a single fixed rank treated in isolation without the general construction) would not by itself complete it. The periodic-boundary case, long known by the analytic Bethe ansatz, enters only as a consistency limit of the construction.
