The factorized scattering of the one-dimensional Hubbard model and of the superstring worldsheet is governed by a Yangian of a centrally extended sl(2|2) whose coproduct is deformed by a braiding element U; Beisert and de Leeuw (2014) constructed its RTT () realization explicitly and showed the algebra has level mixing, a central Liouville contraction Z, a crossing automorphism with non-trivial monodromy, and a tower of 'secret' symmetries. The structural problems left open are: constructing the Yangian double (the quasi-triangular Hopf algebra that would carry the universal R-matrix) and its map to Drinfeld's second realization; defining the quantum (super)determinant and its relation to Z and the center; classifying the central elements and the ideal generated by Z; resolving the crossing automorphism's monodromy consistently, possibly by enlarging the spectral-parameter manifold; and establishing the coproduct/antipode pattern of the secret-symmetry tower at arbitrary Yangian levels.
Background
Planar N=4 super Yang–Mills theory and free strings on are believed to be integrable, and their two-body scattering is encoded in a fundamental R-matrix invariant under a finite-dimensional Lie superalgebra: sl(2|2) extended by three central charges (the Hamiltonian-like element H and two charges C, C-bar) and by a braiding element U. The braiding element is a group-like generator whose presence 'deforms' the coproduct (the rule describing how symmetry generators act on two-particle states), so the algebra is often called the centrally extended or deformed gl(2|2); it underlies both Shastry's R-matrix for the one-dimensional Hubbard model and Beisert's AdS/CFT worldsheet S-matrix. Like other rational integrable systems, this algebra admits an infinite-dimensional extension, the Yangian Y: an associative Hopf algebra whose 'levels' are generated by additional charges acting non-locally on chains of particles. For the deformed gl(2|2) the Yangian is of a non-standard type in which levels mix (the relations and coproducts of a generator at one Yangian level involve generators of other levels, so the clean level-grading of ordinary Yangians is lost) and the coproduct is braided by U. Two presentations of a Yangian are standard: the RTT (Reshetikhin–Takhtadzhjan) realization, where the algebra is defined by the relation satisfied by a monodromy matrix T(u) built from the fundamental R-matrix, and Drinfeld's 'second' (new) realization, in terms of current generators whose relations are adapted to constructing the universal R-matrix. Beisert and de Leeuw (J. Phys. A 47 (2014) 305201) worked out the RTT realization for the deformed gl(2|2) Yangian: the expansion of T(u) around a special point begins with the braiding factor at zeroth order, which generates the central extension; they incorporated the 'secret symmetry' (an extra u(1) generator, B, first found by Matsumoto–Moriyama–Torrielli, which commutes with the even elements of sl(2|2) and has non-trivial commutation relations with the supercharges, as well as a non-trivial, braided coproduct and a non-involutive antipode ) and extended it to a second level ; they constructed the central 'Liouville contraction' (S being the antipode, the Hopf-algebra inverse map), the analogue of the quantum determinant's role in ordinary Yangians; and they analyzed the crossing automorphism , defined via the antipode and the crossing operation on T, under which particle and antiparticle representations are identified. Their findings define the open territory. First, Yangians are not quasi-triangular Hopf algebras, that is, they do not carry a universal R-matrix (an invertible element of the algebra itself satisfying the Yang–Baxter equation, the consistency condition of factorized scattering, from which every representation-dependent R-matrix follows by evaluation); to obtain one, one must enlarge the Yangian to a Yangian double, extending the polynomial loop algebra to Laurent loops , and the natural route is through Drinfeld's second realization, whose relation to the RTT presentation is unknown here. Second, unlike ordinary Yangians where the quantum determinant generates the center, the Liouville contraction Z does not generate the complete center: the braiding element U is central but absent from Z's expansion, and the quantum (super)determinant itself was not defined, its very definition being 'obscured by the deformation'. Third, the central elements and the ideal generated by Z (which, when factored out, would reduce the algebra almost to the conventional Yangian of psl(2|2)) were left unclassified. Fourth, crossing has a global obstruction: applying the automorphism twice gives , so a naive identification of Yangian elements would force and trivialize the center; enlarging the spectral-parameter space by infinitely many Riemann sheets (the parameter u already lives on a genus-one surface with four branch points) or modifying the automorphism by a half-power of Z were sketched as partial fixes, but the consistent identification respecting the algebraic structure was left open, and the half-power version has an acknowledged defect (it destroys the involutive property of the fundamental R-matrix). Fifth, the T-matrix generates an infinite tower of secret symmetries, but only the first two levels were worked out, and the pattern of coproducts and antipodes at arbitrary levels remained unstudied. Subsequent work has clarified neighboring territory without closing these questions: Spill and Torrielli (J. Geom. Phys. 59 (2009) 489) proposed a Drinfeld second realization of the su(2|2) Yangian without a complete Hopf-algebra proof; Matsumoto (J. Math. Phys. 64 (2023) 041704) constructed a Drinfeld realization with manifest coproducts for the centrally extended psl(2|2) Yangian, but with the abelian braiding factor omitted, the PBW (Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt basis) theorem deferred, and no map to the RTT realization; Beisert, de Leeuw and Hecht (J. Phys. A 49 (2016) 434005) built the Drinfeld quantum double and universal R-matrix of the q-deformed (quantum-affine-level) centrally extended sl(2|2), explicitly noting this is not yet the universal R-matrix of the Hubbard/AdS-CFT system; Moriyama and Torrielli (JHEP 0706 (2007) 083) constructed a Yangian double only at the classical r-matrix level; Beisert and Im (SciPost Phys. 14 (2023) 157; arXiv:2401.10327) developed the classical (Lie bialgebra) limit including its classical double; and the secret symmetry was shown to persist in AdS3 and AdS2 worldsheet scattering and to originate from quantum affine gl(2|2) in the rational limit (de Leeuw–Regelskis–Torrielli 2012; Pittelli–Torrielli–Wolf 2014; Hoare–Pittelli–Torrielli 2016; Pittelli 2018).
Problem Statement
For the deformed gl(2|2) Yangian Y constructed via the RTT realization by Beisert and de Leeuw (J. Phys. A 47 (2014) 305201) — the Yangian of centrally extended sl(2|2) with braided coproduct, level mixing, and the braiding element U — complete its structural theory by resolving the following linked questions, which together pin down the Hopf-algebraic content of the symmetry algebra of the Hubbard/ S-matrix: (1) Construct the Yangian double of Y (the quasi-triangular Hopf algebra extending the polynomial loop algebra to Laurent loops, suitable for producing the universal R-matrix whose evaluation in the fundamental representation reproduces Beisert's R-matrix), and establish the explicit isomorphism between the RTT realization and Drinfeld's second realization of Y, including the braiding. (2) Define the quantum (super)determinant of the deformed monodromy matrix T(u), whose definition may be obscured by the deformation, and determine its relation to the Liouville contraction and its role in generating the center — in particular whether it accounts for the braiding element U, which is central but not captured by Z. (3) Classify all central elements of Y and characterize the ideal generated by Z (which, when divided out together with the secret symmetries, should reduce Y almost to the conventional Yangian of psl(2|2)). (4) Determine whether the crossing automorphism , whose square acts as , admits a consistent global identification of Yangian elements that respects the algebraic structure without trivializing the center — for instance by enlarging the spectral-parameter manifold (more Riemann sheets of the genus-one u-plane) or by another construction that preserves both the automorphism property and the involutive property of the fundamental R-matrix. (5) For the tower of secret symmetries generated by the T-matrix, which extends to arbitrarily high Yangian levels (only the level-1 and level-2 cases having been worked out), determine the closed-form pattern of the coproducts and antipodes at arbitrary Yangian levels. A complete answer supplies the constructions or classifications with proofs for each item; a refutation for any item (e.g. a proof that no consistent crossing identification exists, or that no quantum determinant with the stated properties exists on the deformed algebra) resolves that item negatively.
