The paper of Isaev, Karakhanyan and Kirschner (Nucl. Phys. B 904 (2016) 124) constructed, in a uniform treatment of the orthogonal algebra so(n) and the symplectic algebra sp(2m), explicit spinorial and metaplectic Yang-Baxter R-operators and the L-operators yielding linear and quadratic evaluations of the corresponding Yangians, and left three interlocked issues open: (i) the classification of Lie-algebra representations satisfying the quadratic or cubic characteristic identities that govern the first- and second-order truncations of the RLL relation; (ii) the fixing of the arbitrary normalization functions A_0(u) and A_1(u) in the R-operator coefficients, with the analytic consequences; and (iii) a rigorous regularization of the intrinsically infinite-dimensional metaplectic trace and fusion computations. The linear-evaluation classification is complete, and the quadratic-evaluation classification is complete under a vanishing condition on weight components. The unrestricted quadratic classification, the normalization question, and the metaplectic regularization remain open, leaving a precise nonempty open core.
Background
Integrable quantum systems in one dimension are organized by solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation, an associativity-type relation for an operator depending on a complex spectral parameter . For a simple Lie algebra , the Yangian — an infinite-dimensional Hopf algebra deforming the universal enveloping algebra of the polynomial loop algebra of , and one of the standard quantum-group symmetries of integrable models — admits two equivalent styles of definition: the current (Drinfeld) presentation in terms of generators, and the R-matrix (RTT) presentation, in which the algebra is generated by the matrix elements of an L-operator subject to the RLL relation where is the fundamental R-matrix acting on two copies of the defining (fundamental) representation space of . The extended Yangian is the RLL/RTT algebra before quotienting out its center.
For the fundamental R-matrix is linear in , and an L-operator of the natural form , built from the fundamental representation and an arbitrary representation of the generators , satisfies the RLL relation for any : this is the evaluation representation. For the orthogonal and symplectic algebras and the fundamental R-matrix is quadratic in , and truncating the expansion of in inverse powers of imposes additional constraints on the matrix of generators, which can be fulfilled only in distinguished representations. Isaev, Karakhanyan and Kirschner showed that these constraints take the form of characteristic identities — matrix polynomial identities for the generator matrix, analogous to the Cayley–Hamilton theorem: a quadratic identity for truncation at first order (the linear evaluation of the Yangian) and a cubic identity for truncation at second order (the quadratic evaluation). For instance, the spinor-representation generators of the oscillator construction obey with , while the fundamental generators obey the cubic identity , where in the case and in the case. The exhibited admissible representations are the spinor representation of , realized on fermionic oscillators (equivalently the Clifford algebra generated by operators with graded commutation relations fixed by the invariant metric ), its symplectic counterpart — the metaplectic representation on bosonic oscillators, which is infinite-dimensional —, the fundamental representation, and the Jordan–Schwinger representations built from Heisenberg canonical pairs, bosonic in the orthogonal and fermionic in the symplectic case.
The same paper treated both symmetry types uniformly (the and cases are interchanged by swapping symmetrization with antisymmetrization, encoded in the sign ), derived the explicit spinorial/metaplectic R-operator intertwining two oscillator L-operators through a modified RLL relation in which the fundamental R-matrix is replaced by the spinorial one, and showed how the fusion procedure — multiplying L-operators at shifted spectral parameters and projecting the tensor product of two spinor representations onto an invariant subspace, here the fundamental (vector) representation — reproduces the fundamental R-matrix and the Jordan–Schwinger L-operator. The coefficients of the R-operator, contain two arbitrary scalar normalization functions and that the paper leaves unfixed. In the symplectic case the oscillator spaces are infinite-dimensional, so the sums over basis states in the trace and fusion computations require a regularization, which the paper assumes to exist without constructing it. These limitations, together with the fact that the constraints extracted from the RLL relation (such as the vanishing of the triple-index (anti)symmetrized anticommutator of the generators) are established only as necessary conditions, define the open program addressed here. Terminology used below: unitarity of an R-operator means up to normalization, and crossing symmetry relates the operator on to the one on with dual representation; the algebraic Bethe ansatz is the standard pseudovacuum-based method for diagonalizing transfer matrices built from R-operators.
Problem Statement
Complete the representation-theoretic foundation of the orthogonal and symplectic Yangian R-operator framework of Isaev, Karakhanyan and Kirschner, by settling the three interlinked issues the paper left open. The facets, which jointly serve the single objective of placing the spinorial/metaplectic R-operator and the truncated-evaluation L-operators of the and Yangians on complete and rigorous footing, are:
(1) Classification. Determine all representations of or for which the matrix of generators satisfies the quadratic characteristic identity required for the first-order truncation of , or the cubic characteristic identity required for the second-order truncation, so that the L-operator built on obeys the RLL relation; the exhibited spinor/metaplectic, fundamental and Jordan–Schwinger families are not assumed to exhaust the admissible classes. (Later work has settled the linear evaluation and the quadratic evaluation under a vanishing condition on the antisymmetric second weight components; the unrestricted quadratic case and the correspondence between the weight-condition and characteristic-identity formulations for general modules remain open.)
(2) Normalization. Fix the arbitrary scalar normalization functions and in the general solution for the spinorial/metaplectic R-operator coefficients — by natural normalization conditions, analytic continuations, or other principled choices — stating the condition imposed and showing that it determines the two functions uniquely up to an explicitly identified residual freedom, and determine the consequences of the choice for unitarity, crossing symmetry, and the other analytic properties of the R-operator.
(3) Regularization. Construct explicitly the regularization of the metaplectic construction that the source paper assumes: the oscillator spaces are infinite-dimensional, so the sums or integrations over basis states in the trace and fusion computations diverge, and a regularization must be specified under which the trace identities used in the fusion arguments hold, together with its domain of definition, its convergence, and its dependence on the regularization scheme.
The program is complete when the set of admissible representations is classified, the R-operator's analytic normalization is fixed by a stated condition that determines it, with its consequences derived, and the infinite-dimensional symplectic case is rigorously defined.
