The modified algebraic Bethe ansatz and its linear-system method recently yielded a modified Izergin determinant for the partition function of the inhomogeneous rational six-vertex model on a rectangular lattice with two rank-one twists (Belliard, Pimenta, Slavnov, SciPost Phys. 16, 009 (2024)). The conclusion of that paper poses three separate directions in which the construction does not yet exist, and this problem asks for the corresponding constructions, pursued in each setting by the same modified-operator / linear-system method: (a) the analogues of the modified operators and the off-shell triangular relations in the reflection-algebra setting of the six-vertex model with reflecting boundary conditions, together with the associated linear system and a determinant-type solution; (b) appropriate modified operators and off-shell relations for the trigonometric (XXZ) six-vertex model under antiperiodic (sign-twisted) boundary conditions, with the source's wider non-diagonal case a further generalization — explicitly stated to be not yet known — leading to a determinant-type formula for the partition function; and (c) the modified operators, off-shell relations and nested linear systems for higher-rank vertex models based on , and the determination of their determinant-type solutions.
Background
The six-vertex model is an exactly solvable model of statistical mechanics on a square lattice: each edge carries one of two states (conventionally drawn as arrows), and each vertex must satisfy the ice rule — of the four edges meeting at a vertex, exactly two point in and two point out, leaving six admissible vertex configurations. Boundary conditions strongly affect what can be computed. For domain wall boundary conditions (DWBC), in which all arrows on two adjacent sides of an square point inward and all arrows on the other two sides point outward, Korepin derived a recursion relation for the partition function and Izergin solved it as a single determinant, the Izergin–Korepin determinant (see Korepin 1982 and the monograph of Korepin, Bogoliubov and Izergin 1993). On an rectangle with unequal sides, the analogous partial domain wall partition function is also a determinant (Foda–Wheeler 2012), and Minin, Pronko and Tarasov (2023) gave further algebraic characterizations of these determinants.
The integrable structure is organized by the quantum inverse scattering method. The vertex weights form an -matrix, a solution of the Yang–Baxter equation — the quadratic consistency relation guaranteeing that row-to-row transfers commute, which is what makes the model exactly solvable; it is rational for the XXX spin chain and trigonometric for the XXZ spin chain, the two standard integrable spin- lattice models. Stringing -matrices along a lattice row gives a monodromy matrix whose entries satisfy quadratic exchange relations (the RTT relations, inherited from the Yang–Baxter equation) and act as creation and annihilation operators in the algebraic Bethe ansatz (ABA), the standard method for constructing eigenstates of integrable spin chains; tracing with a matrix produces a twisted transfer matrix. When has rank one, the trace degenerates to a single matrix element , called a modified operator (or null transfer matrix), and a partition function with general fixed boundary walls can be written as an expectation value of a product of such operators between product boundary states. The modified algebraic Bethe ansatz (MABA) studies these operators together with off-shell Bethe vectors — vectors built from creation operators with arbitrary spectral parameters that are not required to satisfy Bethe equations: Belliard, Slavnov and Vallet (2018) developed the twisted-XXX case, and Belliard and Slavnov (2019) discovered that scalar products between on-shell Bethe vectors (those whose parameters do satisfy the Bethe equations) and off-shell ones are characterized by linear systems whose unique solutions are determinants, a technique since applied to the closed eight-vertex chain (Slavnov, Zabrodin and Zotov 2020) and to the open XXZ chain with general integrable boundaries (Belliard, Pimenta and Slavnov 2021).
Belliard, Pimenta and Slavnov (SciPost Phys. 16, 009 (2024)) applied the linear-system method to a partition function itself: the inhomogeneous rational six-vertex model on an rectangle with two arbitrary rank-one twists, equivalently four arbitrary boundary walls. From the triangular (highest-weight) action of the modified operators on off-shell Bethe vectors they derived off-shell relations, showed that the partition function obeys a homogeneous linear system in the inhomogeneities that determines it up to normalization (only one effective boundary parameter survives by symmetry), and solved the system as a modified Izergin determinant containing the Izergin–Korepin and Foda–Wheeler determinants as special cases. The conclusion of that paper poses three directions in which the construction does not yet exist: (i) reflecting boundary conditions, where the algebra is Sklyanin's reflection algebra — monodromy matrices built from -matrices and reflection -matrices, describing a lattice whose boundary reflects arrows; (ii) the trigonometric (XXZ) model under antiperiodic, i.e. sign-twisted or more generally non-diagonal, boundary conditions, for which appropriate modified operators and off-shell relations are explicitly stated to be not yet known; and (iii) higher-rank vertex models based on . Determinant formulas do exist for some reflecting-end cases by other methods (Tsuchiya 1998 for a diagonal reflecting end; Yang et al. 2011 for a non-diagonal reflecting end; Hietala 2022 for a partially reflecting end), and the antiperiodic trigonometric transfer matrix has been diagonalized by other routes (commuting transfer matrices, separation of variables, and the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz, a technique that determines spectra for non-diagonal twists without needing a reference state) — but none of these supplies the modified-operator and linear-system construction, which is the missing piece.
Problem Statement
Extend the modified-operator / linear-system method of Belliard, Pimenta and Slavnov beyond the rational rank-one twisted case, constructing for each of the following three settings the modified operators, the off-shell triangular relations, the linear system characterizing the partition function, and its determinant-type solution.
(a) Reflecting boundaries. For the six-vertex model with reflecting boundary conditions — domain-wall-type fixed boundaries combined with one or more reflecting ends (the single-reflecting-end configuration being the basic case, the general construction covering several reflecting ends also being required), governed by the reflection algebra — construct the analogues of the rank-one modified operators, prove the off-shell triangular relations in that algebraic setting, derive the corresponding linear system for the inhomogeneous partition function, and solve it in determinant form.
(b) Trigonometric antiperiodic case. For the trigonometric (XXZ) six-vertex model under antiperiodic (sign-twisted) boundary conditions — the setting the source explicitly identifies as lacking any known modified operators and off-shell relations, and the case required here — find those operators and relations, set up the associated linear system, and obtain the determinant-type formula for the partition function on the rectangular lattice. The source's more general non-diagonal boundary conditions are a wider aim and may be treated as a further generalization.
(c) Higher rank. For vertex models based on with , construct the modified operators and the off-shell relations, derive the associated linear systems — more intricate in this case, as the source notes, given the composite (nested) structure of higher-rank Bethe vectors — and determine their determinant-type solution.
The common scientific objective uniting the three settings is the same as that of the source paper: determinant-type evaluation of inhomogeneous six-vertex-family partition functions via modified operators and off-shell relations. In each setting the construction comprises an explicit operator construction, proofs of the off-shell relations in the relevant algebra, a linear system that determines the partition function up to normalization, and a closed-form solution with correct normalization. The three settings correspond to three separate future-work directions posed in the source's conclusion, which does not rank them among one another. All three settings are required, and a construction confined to a single setting, or to only some of the four components of a setting, answers part of the problem rather than the whole.
