The per-site entropy of the six-vertex (ice-type) model at the ice point — all six vertex weights equal, zero field — depends on the boundary conditions even in the thermodynamic limit: ferroelectric boundaries give , domain-wall boundaries give , and periodic boundaries give Lieb's square-ice value . Tavares, Ribeiro and Korepin (J. Stat. Mech. 2015 P06016) systematized this boundary dependence and left a precise cluster of problems open: (i) the complete classification of fixed boundary conditions into equivalence classes with equal bulk entropy; (ii) the exact computation of the partition function and entropy for the proposed merges of the domain-wall boundary with free or Néel boundaries along central edges, conjectured to realize every entropy in ; and (iii) an exact evaluation of the Néel-boundary partition function — equivalently the enumeration of generalized alternating sign matrices — including a rigorous derivation of the numerically observed asymptotics with . No resolution is known in the literature: later work is numerical or confined to adjacent boundary families (partial domain wall, reflecting end, free-fermion L-shaped domains), so the open core survives intact.
Background
The six-vertex or ice-type model places arrows on the edges of a square lattice subject to the ice rule — exactly two arrows point into and two out of every vertex — leaving six allowed local vertex types. At the ice point all six Boltzmann weights are equal (zero field, anisotropy , 'infinite temperature'), so the partition function on an square simply counts allowed arrow configurations, and the entropy per site is . For models with ordinary finite-range interactions, boundary conditions change the free energy only through surface terms of order . The ice rule behaves differently: boundary arrows constrain the bulk coherently. With periodic (toroidal) boundary conditions the exact residual entropy of square ice is (Lieb, 1967). With domain-wall boundary conditions (DWBC: all horizontal boundary arrows fixed pointing into the square on the left and right sides and all vertical boundary arrows pointing out on the top and bottom — the boundary condition under which equals the number of alternating sign matrices, the square matrices with entries whose nonzero entries alternate in sign along every row and column and sum to one), the determinant representation of the partition function found by Korepin, Izergin and coworkers yields , established rigorously in the thermodynamic limit by Korepin and Zinn-Justin. Ferroelectric boundaries (all boundary arrows aligned) admit exactly one configuration, . Boundary conditions therefore label genuinely different bulk thermodynamics — a striking instance of bulk sensitivity to boundaries, tied to the frozen 'arctic' regions that DWBC force into the lattice.
Tavares, Ribeiro and Korepin (2015) turned this phenomenon into a systematic question: what is the map from a boundary condition to its bulk entropy ? Here a fixed boundary condition prescribes the direction of every one of the boundary arrows, in contrast to periodic toroidal identifications, and the question ranges over all fixed boundaries together with the toroidal and merged constructions built from them. They argued that periodic, anti-periodic and mixed periodic/anti-periodic toroidal boundaries all share the value ; they identified 'descendents' of DWBC — most notably the reflecting-end boundary (domain-wall arrows imposed on three sides with a mirror-reflecting fourth side), whose partition function has Tsuchiya's determinant formula and whose ice-point entropy equals ; and they proved that merging the domain-wall boundary with a ferroelectric boundary along central edges gives entropy , so that merges continuously interpolate . They introduced the Néel (antiferroelectric) boundary, on which the boundary arrows alternate; it is the fixed boundary condition with the largest number of configurations (checked for ), with counts for , computed up to . The first three values coincide with the alternating-sign-matrix counts, after which the sequences part; the full sequence enumerates generalized alternating sign matrices — matrices with entries whose nonzero entries alternate in sign along every row and column, but where the signs of the first and last nonzero entries of each row and column are prescribed by the alternating boundary pattern instead of always being — for which Brualdi and Kim (2014) proved only necessary and sufficient existence conditions, no enumeration formula. An elementary counting bound (with the periodic-boundary count) forces in the thermodynamic limit, and the finite-size numerics fit with ; but no exact treatment of exists. Written as a matrix element of the monodromy-matrix entries — the product of row-to-row -operators whose entries , , , generate the transfer matrix in the algebraic Bethe ansatz, with spectral parameters labeling the rows — , it involves the non-commuting operators and and is not symmetric in the spectral parameters — precisely the two properties on which Izergin-type determinant constructions rest. Finally, merging the domain-wall boundary with free or Néel boundaries along central edges is proposed as the mechanism producing entropies in the interval , but, in the authors' words, 'the precise computation of the entropy for these examples has eluded us so far.' The same paper derives the equal-entropy status of the mixed toroidal sectors from an unproven assumption on transfer-matrix eigenvector overlaps (their condition (60)), and poses — without starting — the question of whether other vertex models show analogous boundary dependence; these two directions are separate objectives and are excluded from this task.
Problem Statement
The common objective is the map assigning to each boundary condition of the ice-point six-vertex model on the square its bulk entropy per site . Its currently open parts, as posed by Tavares, Ribeiro and Korepin (2015), are:
(1) Classification. Determine the equivalence classes of fixed boundary conditions — including merged and mixed boundary constructions — that produce the same bulk entropy (equivalently, the same free energy per site) in the thermodynamic limit. The presently known or conjectured classes are: ferroelectric type, ; DWBC type, comprising DWBC and its descendents such as the reflecting-end boundary, ; periodic type, comprising free, periodic, anti-periodic and mixed toroidal boundaries, together with the Néel boundary, whose leading-order equality is forced by the counting bound , ; and the interpolating merge families. Is this list of classes complete, and into which class does every fixed boundary condition fall?
(2) Merged-boundary entropies. Compute exactly the partition function and the resulting entropy density for the merges of the domain-wall boundary with free or Néel boundary conditions along central edges (and analogously the Néel-ferroelectric merge): in particular, prove or disprove that these merges realize every entropy value in , and determine as a function of the merge ratio .
(3) Néel partition function. Find an exact representation — determinant, product, Bethe-ansatz, or equivalent — of the Néel-boundary partition function , equivalently a formula for the generalized alternating-sign-matrix counts ; or, independently of a closed form, prove rigorously the thermodynamic behavior together with the finite-size asymptotics and the value of (numerically ; the leading-order equality already follows from the elementary bound , so the genuinely open content is the refinement and the value of ).
A complete resolution of the overarching objective consists of the classification in (1) together with exact or rigorous evaluation of the entropies of the boundary families it comprises, of which (2) and (3) are the missing cases. The source's two further open questions — rigorous eigenvector-overlap estimates underlying the mixed periodic/anti-periodic equivalence, and boundary-dependence of bulk quantities in vertex models beyond the six-vertex model — are separate objectives and are excluded from this task.
