The open spin-1/2 XXZ and XXX Heisenberg chains with integrable non-diagonal boundary matrices were solved in 2010-2011 by the generalized Coordinate Bethe Ansatz (gCBA) and the Matrix Coordinate Bethe Ansatz (MCBA) only on explicit constraint manifolds of the boundary parameters (eqs. (39)-(41) of Ragoucy, J. Phys. Conf. Ser. 343 (2011) 012100), and completeness of the combined construction rested on numerics. The 2011 source left open: the extension to completely unconstrained boundary matrices, an analytic completeness proof (completeness on the constraint manifolds rested on numerical evidence), and a synthetical presentation unifying the two ansaetze; higher-rank generalizations were announced in the source as work in progress. The underlying model-level problem was subsequently resolved by other methods: separation of variables (Niccoli 2012; Faldella-Kitanine-Niccoli 2014; Kitanine-Maillet-Niccoli 2014, including an analytic completeness proof for generic boundaries) and the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (Cao-Yang-Shi-Wang 2013; Zhang et al. 2015). What survives - untouched in the 2011-2026 literature apart from a chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz for special phantom-eigenvalue subspaces (Zhang, Klümper and Popkov 2021), which covers only a constrained subsector - is the coordinate-ansatz core: construct - or prove impossible - a coordinate-type Bethe ansatz for fully generic boundary parameters, and give the synthetical unified presentation of the gCBA and MCBA with an analytic completeness proof of the construction in the regimes where it applies.

Background

The spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains are one-dimensional quantum models of LL coupled two-level systems, parameterized by an anisotropy Δ\Delta: the XXX chain (Δ=1\Delta = 1, isotropic) and the XXZ chain (Δ≠1\Delta \neq 1, trigonometric anisotropy). The original coordinate Bethe ansatz (CBA) diagonalizes the periodic chains by writing eigenfunctions as superpositions of plane waves of magnons - flipped spins regarded as pseudo-particles moving on a ferromagnetic background - whose two-body scattering amplitudes are fixed by the eigenvalue equation; the quantization (Bethe) equations follow from periodicity, and completeness of the resulting spectrum is classical.

Open (non-periodic) chains that remain integrable are described by Sklyanin's boundary formalism: the boundary terms must be built from K-matrices solving the reflection equation, the compatibility condition between the bulk R-matrix (the solution of the Yang-Baxter equation - the factorization condition ensuring that many-body scattering decomposes into successive pairwise scatterings - for the six-vertex model, the two-dimensional ice-type lattice model whose local Boltzmann weights encode the XXZ interaction) and the boundary. When the boundary matrices are diagonal (they preserve the spin projection at each end), the CBA extends straightforwardly: magnons scatter in the bulk and reflect at each end with a reflection amplitude. Non-diagonal boundary matrices flip the boundary spin, so the number of magnons is not conserved, the ferromagnetic reference state is generally no longer an eigenstate, and the standard ansatz breaks down. Historically this case was attacked with the algebraic Bethe ansatz (which builds eigenvectors by acting with creation operators on a reference pseudo-vacuum) under constraints on the boundary parameters (de Vega and González Ruiz, 1993), and then by Nepomechie's inversion-identity method (a functional-equation characterization of the spectrum, used in place of an explicit wavefunction ansatz) for the open XX chain (2001, generic parameters, in terms of Jacobian elliptic functions) and the open XXZ chain (2004, with constraint families). Nepomechie and Ravanini (2003) showed numerically that the complete spectrum of the constrained open XXZ chain requires two different types of Bethe equations.

The source of this candidate is a 2011 review by Ragoucy of a joint program with Crampé and Simon. Its generalized Coordinate Bethe Ansatz (gCBA) writes an n-magnon eigenfunction as a sum over sectors with m fixed boundary-adjacent spins, labeled by cosets of the hyperoctahedral Weyl group BCnBC_n (the group of signed permutations of the n magnon momenta, i.e. the symmetry group of the n-dimensional hypercube) relative to BCmBC_m, with reflection amplitudes at the boundaries and new transmission coefficients coupling sectors with different magnon numbers; for the XXZ chain the local spin basis must additionally be made site-dependent, and telescoping terms cancel except at the two ends. For the XXX chain with one triangular boundary matrix the method gives the full spectrum - remarkably, the eigenvalues coincide with those of a diagonal-boundary chain and are independent of the triangular entry - while for the XXZ chain the method works only when the four boundary parameters satisfy one of two explicit families of constraint relations (eqs. (39)-(41) of the source), one equivalent to the constraints obtained earlier by the fusion approach (constructing higher-spin conserved quantities from products of R-matrices) and one new. The companion Matrix Coordinate Bethe Ansatz (MCBA) makes the ansatz non-commutative: the amplitudes take values in an auxiliary quadratic algebra acting on an extra space, and the matrix-product stationary state of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP - a stochastic nearest-neighbor particle hopping model whose Markov matrix is precisely the open XXZ Hamiltonian with non-diagonal boundaries, solved by the matrix product ansatz, i.e. by representing stationary weights as traces of products of auxiliary matrices) plays the role of a new vacuum on which coordinate excitations are built. Numerical evidence indicated that gCBA plus MCBA yields the complete spectrum on the constraint manifolds, but no analytic proof was given.

The situation changed after 2011 for the model itself, though not for the coordinate-ansatz program. Sklyanin's separation of variables (SoV) - diagonalizing the transfer matrix (the commuting one-parameter family of operators built from the R- and K-matrices, of which the Hamiltonian is a derivative at a special point) by mapping it to multiplication by separate spectral variables - was adapted to the reflection algebra: Niccoli (2012) obtained the complete spectrum, eigenstates and spectral simplicity (non-degeneracy of the spectrum) of the non-diagonal open XXZ chain with no constraints; Faldella, Kitanine and Niccoli (2014) constructed the eigenstates and scalar products for the most general boundary terms; Kitanine, Maillet and Niccoli (2014) derived a Baxter-type functional equation and proved analytically that the associated generalized Bethe equations characterize the complete transfer-matrix spectrum for generic integrable boundaries, explicitly describing this as a longstanding problem; Kitanine, Maillet, Niccoli and Terras (2018) computed scalar products of separate states for the XXZ chain with the most general boundary terms. In parallel, the off-diagonal Bethe ansatz (ODBA) of Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang (2013) - which replaces the usual homogeneous T-Q relation, a functional relation between the transfer-matrix eigenvalue T and an auxiliary function Q, by an inhomogeneous T-Q relation with an extra inhomogeneous term - produced the eigenvalues of the XXX chain with arbitrary boundary conditions and of the XXZ and XYZ chains with arbitrary boundary fields; Zhang, Li, Cao, Yang, Shi and Wang (2015) then retrieved explicit Bethe-type eigenstates for the open XXX chain; Belliard and Crampé (2013) constructed XXX eigenvectors with general boundaries by a generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz; and the modified algebraic Bethe ansatz (Belliard 2015; Belliard-Pimenta 2015; Avan, Belliard, Grosjean and Pimenta 2015) treated the XXZ chain on the segment with general boundary parameters. Maillet and Niccoli (2019) extended SoV to higher-rank reflection algebras with general boundary conditions. Chernyak, Gainutdinov, Jacobsen and Saleur (2023) gave an algebraic Bethe ansatz for the open XXZ chain with non-diagonal boundaries via Uqsl2U_q\mathfrak{sl}_2 symmetry (the quantum-group deformation of the sl2\mathfrak{sl}_2 symmetry algebra), still under a constraint. Thus eigenvalues, eigenvectors (in operator or SoV form) and completeness are settled at the model level for completely generic boundary parameters - but no coordinate-form (magnon wavefunction) construction is known off the constraint manifolds, and even inside the SoV program the Bethe-state-form descriptions of XXZ eigenvectors used for correlation functions exist only under constraints or special gauge choices (Niccoli 2021; Niccoli-Terras 2022-2026). The only post-2011 advance of a coordinate ansatz on the open XXZ chain itself is the chiral coordinate Bethe ansatz of Zhang, Klümper and Popkov (2021) for phantom eigenstates - a family of special invariant subspaces selected by a phantom-roots criterion - which again covers a constrained subsector rather than generic boundaries. Whether a coordinate-type solution exists for generic boundaries, and exactly where, is the surviving question.

Problem Statement

Within the source-faithful program of the generalized Coordinate Bethe Ansatz (gCBA) for open spin chains with non-diagonal boundaries (Ragoucy, J. Phys. Conf. Ser. 343 (2011) 012100), the following core survives the 2012-2015 separation-of-variables and off-diagonal-Bethe-ansatz resolutions of the spectral problem:

  1. Generic-boundary construction or impossibility. For the open spin-1/2 XXZ and XXX chains with completely generic integrable non-diagonal boundary matrices - that is, boundary matrices subject only to the defining integrability condition (the reflection equation, trigonometric for XXZ and rational for XXX), with gauge-equivalent boundaries B±→UB±U−1B^{\pm} \to U B^{\pm} U^{-1} identified as in the source, and not restricted by the constraint relations of eqs. (39)-(41) of Ragoucy's review or by any further algebraic condition - determine whether a coordinate-type Bethe ansatz exists. Here a coordinate-type Bethe ansatz means a construction in the gCBA/MCBA class: for arbitrary chain length LL, eigenvectors given as explicit superpositions of magnon (coordinate-configuration) wavefunctions, with sectors of different magnon number coupled by reflection and transmission amplitudes at the two ends, with amplitudes that are scalar (gCBA) or take values in an auxiliary quadratic algebra (MCBA), together with a closed system of Bethe-type quantization equations for the rapidities. Purely operator-algebraic or functional representations (algebraic-Bethe-ansatz creation operators, SoV separate states, T-Q relations) that do not yield such an explicit coordinate-space wavefunction do not count as coordinate-type solutions. If a coordinate-type Bethe ansatz exists, construct it explicitly and prove that it satisfies the eigenvalue equation for arbitrary chain length; if it does not exist, prove an obstruction that applies to this whole class, not merely to one particular ansatz family within it.

  2. Unification and completeness. Provide a synthetical presentation unifying the generalized scalar CBA and the Matrix Coordinate Bethe Ansatz - in the source's picture, the matrix-product vacuum appears as the reference sector on which the non-commutative coordinate excitations are built - and, within this unified setting, give a rigorous analytic proof that the combined construction yields the complete set of eigenvalues and eigenvectors in the parameter regimes where the construction applies (in particular, the constraint families of eqs. (39)-(41) for the XXZ chain and the triangular-boundary case for the XXX chain), replacing the numerical evidence on which the original completeness claim rested.

These two components constitute the source's open objective: a complete coordinate-ansatz theory of open chains with non-diagonal boundaries. Since the model-level spectral problem is already settled by SoV and ODBA, an answer that merely re-derives the spectrum or eigenvalues by those or similar non-coordinate methods does not resolve this problem.
